I have two considerations:

Blink-182 and Led Zeppelin

Cobain is more famous than Grohl imo

I agree. I don’t even think it’s close.

Motley Crue - I’d say Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx are more famous than Vince Neil

Interesting.. and I think you're right.

But I think that was less to do with the band and more to do with their activities outside of the band and after they were chart-toppers

Nikki was a famous heroin addict who after the height of MC wrote some books and had relationships with high-profile women which kept him in the news.

Tommy is really only more famous than Vince for marrying extremely high-profile women and the chaotic tabloid fodder relationships he had with them.

I think there a lot of people from a couple of generations if not more that know Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee but is you said Motley Crue to them they wouldn't know the band.

Busted.

The Stranglers

Firework73 · 08/03/2026 11:27

I came on to say Spandau as for me Martin Kemp just edges it !

FruAashild · 08/03/2026 11:27

Not at the time but possibly now: Abba.
Possibly Santana (named after the guitarist).
The Housemartins (Norman Cook/Fatboy Slim).

LizardCase · 08/03/2026 11:28

Dave Clark Five
Van Halen
The Yardbirds
Cream

deeplybaffled · 08/03/2026 11:28

Cream!

Francestein · 08/03/2026 11:28

Queen… The Rolling Stones… The Beatles

Pingponghavoc · 08/03/2026 11:28

Fleetwood mac?

Genesis, before Phip Collins who was the drummer (and main songwriter I think) left

The Yardbirds would have been a better bet than Led Zeppelin 😀

Fleetwood Mac were named after the drummer, which is a pretty heavy trip 😎

And Manfred Mann were named after their keyboard player!

I know it isn't quite the question that OP asked, but I always think that Queen's second and third best singers would have been hands-down the lead singers in any other band.

KnickerlessParsons · 08/03/2026 11:29

The Beatles.

Errr Dave Grohl possibly? You seem very invested in this debate...

He wouldn't be where he is without Kurt Cobain. Without Kurt and Kris there wouldn't be any mediocre Foo Fighters.

AntiqueBabyLoanSmurf · 08/03/2026 11:30

Milli Vanilli Grin

GellerYeller · 08/03/2026 11:30

Seconding Fall Out Boy.

Niche but LS Dunes, emo supergroup. Guitarist is Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance.

squashyhat · 08/03/2026 11:30

Maybe Queen now but not while Freddie was alive!

Cherrycola4 · 08/03/2026 11:31

Sex Pistols

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 08/03/2026 11:31

Hmmm... does Chuck D count as "lead singer" of Public Enemy? I reckon Flavor Flav is better known.

Mis-Teeq - Sabrina was definitely the lead.

Happy Mondays? Bez rather than Shaun?

thetemptationofchocolate · 08/03/2026 11:31

I'm thinking maybe Spandau Ballet if we're counting fame-after-music.

squashyhat · 08/03/2026 11:31

Maybe Queen now but not while Freddie was alive!

Mike and the Mechanics.

Pingponghavoc · 08/03/2026 11:32

Captain Sensible is probably more famous than Dave Vanian.

FictionalCharacter · 08/03/2026 11:32

Dr Feelgood. Wilko was the star!

GellerYeller · 08/03/2026 11:32

Inspiral Carpets- Clint Boon.
