Net curtains are not a legal requirement!!??

Have had a visit from the person whose house backs onto ours. We have small gardens so it’s very close (new build estate).

She asked me to get net curtains! Apparently it’s a legal requirement for privacy and modesty reasons when houses are so close together ?
That they can see me eating in my kitchen and can see directly into my bedroom.

If I’m getting dressed / changed I shut the actual curtains??

In the morning I do like to open them and have tea / breakfast in bed. I’m not doing naked pilates or anything!
My kitchen table faces out towards the garden but I fail to see how them being able to see me eating is a modesty issue ?

I explained I don’t like nets. Also I can see that they have nets????!!!!!

She told me she will take it further as it could be seen as a nuisance issue ?

It’s made me feel really self conscious to think someone has noticed me eating / having tea in bed !

Why would you want a neighbour to see you in your bed?
That's odd.
Most people would have blackout curtains let alone net curtains in their bedroom for privacy/keep out the light.

Springisnearlyspring · 06/03/2026 19:11

Joking aside I wouldn’t entertain it. Firmly say there’s no requirement for nets.
Clutching at straws is she from overseas, some homeowner associations in USA have weird rules about not hanging washing out and only white linings in curtains facing street etc.

Naked cello playing, OP, that’ll learn her.

I’m going against the grain here but I think it is possible if you’re on an estate that there is a covenant or local requirement of some sort. Have you checked the small print?

Not for obligatory net curtains there won’t be 🤣

besides, tbh who cares if there is? What is she going to do, take out an injunction against OP to force her to stick up nets? Sue her?

RufusLumleyImStandingNsoul · 06/03/2026 19:15

Net curtains are for twitching🙋👀

cocoromo · 06/03/2026 19:15

Net bloody curtains 😂😂😂
that’s brilliant - please take up naked yoga and let us know the outcome 🙈

Princessofpumpkins · 06/03/2026 19:16

That’s so nice, such a chance to foster community, when you’re having your tea in bed give her a friendly wave.

Not for net curtains specifically but I also made the same point earlier about window privacy.

Some of these estates have some funny rules.

Oh good. Can she pop round to my neighbours at the back and ask them the same!
They have a shower right in front of the window and zero blinds! Her DH literally puts his foot on the window ledge and washes his arsecrack in said window and you can literally see everything! I did mention that I could see everything through the frosted glass when the lights were on, and she laughed. 🫣

If the shower is literally in front of the window, any window coverings they put up would end up sopping wet.

And surely you don't get a clear view through the frosted window? I've only ever been able to see colour and shape through frosted glass, so while I can see there's a naked person, it's not possible to actually make out their cock or whatever.

Loub1987 · 06/03/2026 19:19

I had such a horrible day at work and needed a laugh. So thank you @NetcurtainProblem. Good luck with that neighbour 😂

Springisnearlyspring · 06/03/2026 19:20

I’ve not seen net curtains for years.

CreepyCoupe · 06/03/2026 19:20

That’s hilarious! Who has bloody net curtains? It’s not the 1970s. I’d thoroughly enjoy this.

You know you now need to take up naked pilates....

I have reached the age where seeing a woman doing this might trigger a medical emergency

Tuesdayschild50 · 06/03/2026 19:23

No-one has net curtains anymore ffs.
Maybe get some blinds I wouldn't like the thought of someone looking in.

I am not allowed to hold public entertainments (like a circus) in my east London Edwardian terrace, and I can’t put up advertising hoardings. So that scuppered my flea circus ambitions.

But nothing about net curtains.

SherbertLemons · 06/03/2026 19:04

Ahhh yes. The Net Curtain Act 1965. 😂😂😂

I think the full title might be "The Net Curtain (Prevention of Pearl-Clutching) Act 1965).

I really find it hard to get my head round the sort of neighbour who thinks they have the right to order someone to get net curtains.

Womaninhouse17 · 06/03/2026 19:29

Ridiculous. Of course it's not a legal requirement (at least, not here in the UK). Tell her to just not look if she doesn't want to see.

Womaninhouse17 · 06/03/2026 19:31

NetcurtainProblem · 06/03/2026 17:47

Well I’m younger yes but I’m very average looking and I don’t eat particularly seductively so hopefully not !!

I think you ought to practise eating your cornflakes in a seductive way!

I have net curtains, they're really pretty and Ive been reminded that I need to get some replacements. They're from Ikea

Corriewasfunny · 06/03/2026 19:33

You sound like an pervy exhibitionist OP. I would put nets up to stop anyone being able to see me in my house.

Piknik · 06/03/2026 19:34

Talisin · 06/03/2026 19:19

Tell her you’re from The Netherlands.

I do this. Our bedroom is a loft conversion so has big slidey doors overlooking our garden. We have a double rail - thick velvet on top of sheer muslin. I usually sleep with just the muslin drawn so that the sunlight gradually wakes me up. I much prefer it.

Get some celebrity life size cutouts OP. Move them about a bit and give her something to gossip about.
