I know. Pointless. And if it's a positive, so what? No-one is going to sound the lockdown alarm and dig up Boris to deliver a national address over it.

My DH had an awful flu which came with some explosive gastric issues recently. The doctor told him to do a COVID test as well. The tests are specifically for COVID 19. DH had his COVID vaccinations at the time and we didn't really see the point but we did it out of curiosity anyway. It was negative.

Just because it wasn't COVID 19 doesn't mean it wasn't one of the other zillions of coronaviruses that are constantly circulating somewhere. In the end it makes no difference what virus it was. He was very unwell and confined to bed regardless.

The argument that testing for COVID 19 is the responsible thing to do for the sake of medically vulnerable people is a bit daft now. If they are medically vulnerable to COVID 19 they are probably also MV to most nasty viruses. Staying at home until you think you are no longer contagious with any aggressive virus is always sensible and in this case it's pretty much essential due to being too ill to do otherwise.

I’ve just answered the reason why testing is still available.

They are antivirals but the process is very strict to get them. My son has to have an IV infusion since he is tube fed.

It’s wonderful that so many people are normal and can recover from bugs such as Covid, but for a tiny minority these bugs can be deadly.

If a Covid test leads to the antivirals saving one person, then I’m all for the tests still being available, if necessary.

My whole point was that the test you buy is for COVID 19 and some of its variants, but there can still be false negatives and anyway, it won't help with identifying other strains of COVID or viruses that are not COVID. Your son is probably vulnerable to loads of viruses that aren't COVID 19 and a negative test for it doesn't automatically mean that ill person is safe to be around your son, does it?

Why is it ok for you and DH to be curious if you have Covid but pointless for everyone else?

We did it because the doctor suggested we did. If we hadn't gone to the doctor we wouldn't have bothered with the test. If it had been me I wouldn't have bothered at all but my husband was the one who was ill and he decided he would.

But again, my point is that wanting to know for your own curiosity is one thing, but what use is that knowledge to anyone, in the wider context? None whatsover. Whatever virus he had, it was making him very ill either way and in terms of how it was dealt with by the doctor, the treatment offered (none, just told to buy paracetamol and keep up the fluid intake) it was the same either way.

paracetamol, loads of fluids and drink some flat, full fat coke. Stay away from anyone and don’t bother with a covid test!

But you didn’t have to get it done but you did.

Covid pandemic was a once in a lifetime calamity, of course many people are going to be curious if they have the virus again.

I wouldn't be calling someone "soft arse" when your post is about you having the trots 🤣

Joking, I hope you feel better soon!

Peony1985 · 07/03/2026 13:34

@nomas Did you not read the bit where she said neither of them would have bothered if the doctor hadn’t advised it.
Clearly “curious” is just the nearest term to “why not”.
The DH was bed ridden. Testing meant nothing either way.

ThisRedLion · 07/03/2026 18:08

Or just plain old tummy bug or bad food

First time I had Covid I had explosive diarrhoea, dreadful abdominal pain, unbearable headache & runny nose. Get a test from Amazon.

The new strain isn’t being detected by current tests ……

TinaTwinkleToes · 06/03/2026 21:26

My eyes burn. I've sent for covid tests off amazon.

The current tests aren’t detecting the new strain of Covid. Work in NHS and we were notified of this this week

Almost certainly a virus I would say, sadly, and from experience, such infections tend to take longer to resolve as we age . . .

There's a tummy bug going round our way at the moment, 2 of my DC (the toddlers) have had absolutely honking runs. And I've had it too, horrific tummy cramps and even worse runs than normal - I have IBS but I could tell this wasn't my normal crap (so to speak 😂).

Just to chime in on the immodium comments, it is true that you shouldn't bung yourself up when it's a bug.

I used to take loperamide back when it actually worked for me (I became immune to it). But that's cos my diarrhoea is functional. There are no germs or bugs.

If your body is trying to expel the germs/bug (that's what diarrhoea and sickness essentially is doing), it's best to actually let it come out rather than keep it in.

I take codeine these days for my IBS and my stomach bugs ALWAYS last longer than anyone else cos it keeps the germs in for longer. Unfortunately I have to take it daily now but it is recommended to let it all come out!

Hereforthecommentz · 06/03/2026 19:45

Stomach bug obvs. Take some immodium

Don’t take Imodium unless you need to leave the house. It’s better to let whatever is upsetting your stomach leave your body. Buscopan is an antispasmodic that will help with the pain.

catownerofthenorth · 08/03/2026 01:18

It could be measles. It’s rampant at the moment in England. You can still catch it despite vaccine though less complications. In adults especially you can get the bowel symptoms. The eye issues you describe make me v suspicious. Hopefully you can ride it out but if you do seek medical advice please mention measles BEFORE you enter the building so you can be isolated. Where are you in the world?

LFTs don't work for any variants anymore until about day 5/6 of being positive

I had Covid at the tail end of summer. My stomach was ‘unreliable’ for about a month. The exhaustion lasted 3? Months. Awful.
