Several Drs have told me immodium is a bad idea that your body is trying to remove a harm so trying to stop that is a problem

Imodium is OK as long as you still pay attention as to what might be wrong with you.

Pale, sweet diarrhoea? Ew, did you have a nibble?

Gross. 🤮 Yes you should duck behind the sofa. 😂 Quackers!

I had food poisoning recently, was as you described plus throwing up as well - Imodium sorts out one end at least.

Of course I understand why some people need to be tested, but these tests are and always have been unreliable.

If people are immunocompromised, then they should be getting tested properly at the doctors or arranged via their specialist.

Edited

You don't understand the process and the home tests are always the starting point. If that is positive, then you can get antivirals without the hassle of an appointment when you feel awful, or going out spreading the disease to other people.

Other people test because they don't want to be the ah who spreads it around if they know they have it. Or because they are in contact with someone for who it matters.

Posting laughing faces because you can't believe people still test for Covid shows ignorance.

BillieWiper · 06/03/2026 23:28

I would think it's mild FP and should pass soon. Drink dioralyte and plenty of other fluids. Eat plain things not fatty or spicy. Hope you feel better soon x

I'm not ignorant actually. I've an immunocompromised parent. It doesn't work like that where I'm from, it works how I said, it's perfectly normal for different countries to have different processes.

My laughing emoji was directed at normal healthy people ordering tests from ebay/amazon etc. NOT immunocompromised people.

Late 30s

Mine got worse with age. Always had period pain and later years started having some diarrhea and then it slowly got worse. Maybe its that? The smooth muscle of the womb is what causes period pain and the bowel has smooth muscle too. So once the prostaglandins start acting on the smooth muscle, the whole damned thing gets involved.

(Sort of like the last 7 days in the middle east.)

The Mechanism: To shed the uterine lining (endometrium) each month, the smooth muscle walls of the uterus must tighten and relax.
Why it Hurts: When prostaglandin levels are high, the uterus contracts more strongly. These strong contractions compress nearby blood vessels, reducing blood flow and oxygen to the muscle tissue, which results in pain.
Prostaglandin Levels: Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more severe menstrual cramps.

giantchocchipmuffin · 07/03/2026 00:57

I’m a nurse and Imodium is definitely not recommended for any type of diarrhoea which is “unusual” (not your usual bowel pattern, ibs etc). On the wards, this was never prescribed for patients who had loose stools because as PP have said, it’s better to get any kind of “bug” out.

Anyway, I hope you feel better soon OP.

What's wrong with normal healthy people ordering tests? Presumably they are the kind of people who prefer not to spread it around the community.

They don't just have value for immunocompromised people though.

I've found the Covid ones pretty good. The flu ones not so reliable. I live with someone for who it matters. When I got the flu last year I felt like death, but dragged myself off to the lab to get tested. My only reason for doing so was so that if my family member got sick, they knew what they had in time to get it treated appropriately.

I support normal healthy people testing so they can inform others and make informed choices for their behaviour.

Is that not what you meant @BustyLaRoux

So the tests are reliable for immunocompromised people but unreliable for non-immunocompromised people? Confused

Of course many people (not all) want to know if they have Covid, why on earth are you gate-keeping Covid tests.

Conversationalcheddar · 07/03/2026 03:27

Yup, we all had this during half term. Was a great bonding experience with the kids 🙄

Covid tests are reliable. Amazon sells the proper ones but cheaper than Boots etc.

Mostly reliable. They can sometimes be a bit slow to turn positive but they do tend to. The ones that have flu tests built in - I've found the flu component useless.

Well you clearly are.

I’m perfectly healthy but care for a severely disabled adult son. The last time he caught flu, it quickly progressed to pneumonia and sepsis and we nearly lost him. When he had Covid, he was given antivirals to hopefully prevent death.

We have our Covid tests provided by the NHS, so I can test if I’m unwell. By the time, he would be showing symptoms it’d probably be too late.

Try not to comment on things you don’t understand.

Stomach bug obvs. Take some immodium

Ooo I wouldn’t do this, better get it out then keep it in - just stay home a few days,
keep your fluids up and get rest

Because either way you are ill and don’t want to spread it round?
If you have “ germs” runny nose, cough, stomach upset these can all be passed on.

I can't believe people are still taking Covid tests 😂

@TinaTwinkleToes you don't need a Covid test, you clearly know you are ill. Stay home, keep hydrated, and rest up.

It's clearly some kind of infection. You just need to ride it out.

I know. Pointless. And if it's a positive, so what? No-one is going to sound the lockdown alarm and dig up Boris to deliver a national address over it.

My DH had an awful flu which came with some explosive gastric issues recently. The doctor told him to do a COVID test as well. The tests are specifically for COVID 19. DH had his COVID vaccinations at the time and we didn't really see the point but we did it out of curiosity anyway. It was negative.

Just because it wasn't COVID 19 doesn't mean it wasn't one of the other zillions of coronaviruses that are constantly circulating somewhere. In the end it makes no difference what virus it was. He was very unwell and confined to bed regardless.

The argument that testing for COVID 19 is the responsible thing to do for the sake of medically vulnerable people is a bit daft now. If they are medically vulnerable to COVID 19 they are probably also MV to most nasty viruses. Staying at home until you think you are no longer contagious with any aggressive virus is always sensible and in this case it's pretty much essential due to being too ill to do otherwise.
