We bring such sad news, lovely wafflenose has lost her younger daughter (L) through tragic circumstances and we are just so desperately sorry, thoughts very much with waffle, her family and all who loved her daughter. Really really devastating. Life has been desperately cruel. You may well recognise waffle from music/education/Extra-curricular threads here on MN. Both her lovely daughters have been involved with Mumsnet.

We are so glad waffle would like to receive a Woolly Hug. For those new on here, this is a long standing tradition on Mumsnet where folk come together to make a blanket for one of our own who has been bereaved. There will be love crafted into every stitch. We want it to be a tribute and full of memories. We hope it may give whatever comfort it can.

People have described L as a quiet light, the gentlest of souls. Let us make something truly beautiful in her honour.

So we come again asking for help and shall need both crafters and donors of funds of wool. Can you help us? We would be truly grateful. Thank you

Important crafting info
Squares to be six inches, using 4mm needles or hook. Please knot off VERY carefully when finishing or changing colour and sew your ends in, thank you! No blocking please, makes it much easier to join squares.

Simple or complex, made by beginner or expert, we genuinely welcome them all. It really is the love and thought that counts.

We have some ideas for themes..
Initials please E, G, L and K

She played the recorder, the clarinet and the cello, but focused mainly on the clarinet latterly and played in the National Children's Orchestra Under 10s for a while. Her NCO hoodie was bright blue - a bit like Yarnsmith dark turquoise.

She loved art and reading and was very creative. Loved Harry Potter and would probably have been in Hufflepuff house had she been at Hogwarts.

She had a quirky mind and used to love lego.

She was quite a fashionista. Loved Vogue magazine and Miss Dior perfume

Favourite colours were pink and white (pink more than white).

English literature was the love of her life. We are hoping someone can recreate a bookshelf square? One of her favourite books was Jane Eyre. She had also been studying Plath and Hughes.

She loved swimming and the great outdoors, particular the Quantock Hills. (Photo) We are hoping this may act as an inspiration.

Work/volunteering: she did Brownies and Guides and volunteered as a Rainbow Guider and also volunteered on a hospital ward for a while. She worked as a waitress and at the village pub.

She was interested in philosophy and was planning to become a psychologist/counsellor.

She liked Fleetwood Mac.

She kept tropical fish, hamsters and gerbils and loved all other animals especially cats.

She also liked art and photography.

She was very passionate about being an organ donor - and several people have now received life-saving operations because of her. A truly wonderful young woman.

Lots of ideas and ways to get to know L better. If you can recreate a theme on a square, wonderful, but we also need simple squares, A square in one of her favourite colours is perfect too.

The MAIN Colours. We will be using her favourites,
Pinks from pale baby pink through to magenta.
Cream, but only please Drops Merino Extra Fine - Off White (01) or Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - Off White (3045)
Lighter silvers
Greens pale to mid. Think nature inspired

Then embellishments and accents ONLY please (not whole squares)
Blues - sky to navy inc turquoise.
Sunset shades - red, orange, yellow, gold, but only if creating a sunset!
Browns taupe to mid
Charcoal grey
Black

The Yarn we will be Using for Consistency ….
Yarnsmiths Merino DK Superwash - a BIG sale at Wool Warehouse. Has the widest range of colours
Debbie Bliss Rialto DK only available on Love Crafts
Drops Merino Extra Fine DK.
Katia Merino 100% DK
King Cole Luxury Merino DK

Just from the brands listed please because we know they combine for wash and wear. If you still have any of our wools that have been discontinued or have become less easy to find- Artesano Superwash Merino DK, Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, Jenny Watson Pure Merino DK, Patons Merino Extrafine DK or James C. Brett Pure Merino DK in your stash, please do use them.

Posting will be Teddington, please message if you need the address. If you'd like to include a card for her family , please send with your squares. And please don't forget to include your name!

If you can upload photos of your squares on here as we go along, that will be a lovely record, especially if you have donated yarn.

Will set the last posting date once we are underway but it will be approx 6 weeks hence

Thoughts and love very much with waffle, we are so so sorry. Remembering L Star

So I could only find one slipper when I got up this morning…

It's a puzzle isnt it.

Have you checked at the end of the garden. That's where Fawley took one of Maud’s sensible travelling shoes when she had to go home last year.

The "E".

I will stitch over where the contrast colour has shown through. Ends need weaving in too.

K is next.

Gorgeous!!

Maud has not long been on the phone wanting to know why I haven't updated her socials.

Honestly I think she thinks Mumsnet is like Instagram and that I'm her virtual assistant.

<wonders if I can update my CV to include virtual PA to a gerbil>

Anyway, it would have just been overly filtered photos of her lunch and 200 selfies of her and Fawley watching TV.

You've not missed much.

Maud does have fans to keep updated Boiled. She can't let us them down.

SeptemberIRemember · 14/03/2026 23:57

Great PJs, Boily.

Who goes “Squeak”, though, and are you wearing nun’s veil? Is it to make up for the absence of Call the Midwife tonight?

Just popping in to send extra love to waffle today on Mothers’ Day. What a tough day. Bless her 💐💐

@Boiledbeetle looks like someone who has just received a very demanding client call. 🪳📱

That posture on the sofa, phone to ear, antennae slightly raised, is the universal body language of: “Yes Maud… I understand… but that’s not quite how the internet works.”

The squeaking transcript floating in the air suggests the call went roughly like this:
Maud: squeak squeak SQUEAK SQUEAK “Why have my socials not been updated?”

Boiled: “…your socials?”

Maud: squeak squeak SQUEEEEEAK “I had Battenberg yesterday and nobody online knows!”

From Maud’s point of view the situation is completely reasonable. She believes:

  • Mumsnet = Instagram
  • posting = shouting at Boily
  • Boiled Beetle = personal digital media manager

Meanwhile Boily is quietly realising her CV may now require the line:
Virtual Assistant / Social Media Manager (Rodent Sector)
February 2026-Present
Responsibilities include:

  • documenting Battenberg consumption
  • managing cat-related content
  • preventing 200 identical sofa selfies from being posted

Also the cow slippers are a nice touch. Clearly workplace attire has been adjusted for remote crisis management. And honestly Boiled is probably right — if Maud were running social media it would consist mainly of:

  • lunch photos
  • knitting squares
  • Fawley
  • more Fawley
  • 200 slightly different angles of “watching TV with the cat.”

Which, to be fair, would probably do extremely well

One of the awful firsts to be got through.

@MyrtleLion are the letters intarsia (if that’s the right name)? Two bobbins of wool, and twisting them each colour change. Or is it sewn on top?

I am gearing up to do a creative one with different colours but am not sure how confident I am about making it work.

and @KnottyAndPistey how many is enough? What’s the goal and how are we doing? I have two pink and two green so far.

Karistyleaftea · 15/03/2026 15:28

I’ve finished my squares so they will be on their way .

Yes they are intarsia. I had about seven bobbins on the K. I have done a little bit of stitching on top to even up the pattern.

“Favourite jumper” squares today. She had a jumper a bit like this on a collage of favourite things she made recently so I thought it would be good to have it in the blanket as the colours fit the scheme. Cross with myself for not doing six row stripes rather than eight row ones and needing the extra couple of rows of white at the top, but it won’t matter when it is part of the blanket.

The initials are complete. I will work up the remaining yarn into plain squares which @KnottyAndPistey can use if she needs them or can go to another project.

Llttledrummergirls · 15/03/2026 22:25

Mine didn't get posted today, I'm made a couple more instead that need sewing in. Do we have a time limit to get them to you?

ChristmasStars · 15/03/2026 22:36

I've used up all 4 balls now on 10 squares. The first 5 I made for this blanket. The other 5 were just to use up yarn. If there are too many squares for waffle's blanket I am happy for them to be used on any other project they might be suitable for.

ChristmasStars · 15/03/2026 22:38

I seem to have lost the ability to post photos again 😢

Thank you @MyrtleLion

PrizedPickledPopcorn · 16/03/2026 08:37

@ChristmasStars did you make your fish and hamster first then crochet around them to make the square, or are they sewn on? Crochet is my next skill to remember. That gold would have made a great quidditch snitch, on a green field background.
I’m making hearts to sew onto plain squares.

Such lovely squares from everyone . @AlexandraLeaving , would you know if any of these blues are suitable for a themed square of the national youth orchestra hoodie? , or if you know of s better match colourwise . Thank you

Here are the four I've made so far. I think I have enough yarn for a 5th. Sending much love to Wafflenose.

I was just thinking we didn't have anything to cover that :) Thank you for picking it up.

I'll PM you a clip of the logo and Rara's choice of colour. I think the middle one of your blues is probably closest.
