Anyone starting to wonder if they should be making a little ‘emergency inventory’

Don’t laugh! 😆

I mean I’m not overly worried about there suddenly being ww3 and bombs dropping above our heads next week. But hey, natural disasters, some variant of a Covid drama put upon us again, one day one of the mad countries with some nuclear weapon may surprise us. God knows, nothing surprises me lately with the stuff going on. The trust in our politicians and well our own royal family member of two shows these people just say what they think we want to hear or need to hear. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.
The world seems to be pretty balmy lately.

But one thing since becoming a mum is you do think more about ‘what if’.

I didn’t have kids when Covid happened. And I didn’t really buy into it as much as others (I know we all have our own viewpoints on it).
But you’ve got to admit the world is feeling a bit weird lately.

So I’d love to hear what others would in a worst case scenario think they’d want or put in an emergency suitcase or keep stocked at home or whatever.

It can be light hearted or serious.. enlighten me 🙃

Tinned fruit?

Dragonflytamer · 03/03/2026 18:08

I don't really think it is nuclear bombs we need to worry about - just look at Ukraine it is far more likely to be like that. The UK defenses are pretty shit - we only have about 200 tanks! We'd have to clean up the pillar boxes along the railways and canals.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 03/03/2026 19:44

I don’t come on much anymore but came back to do a search to see if a thread like this about updated odes was in existence.

It won't get you anywhere if you had to evacuate as a refugee to another country. Banks won't crash. A short term outage is like 12 hours maximum.

Eta I have a well stocked larder and torches, battery radio, and thankfully a medium sized garden.

Edited

I think it’s a bit of a leap to jump to a need to flee the country.

I’m surprised at the spectrum of comments on the cash 😅

I keep it to hand because the time we lost access to our joint account it came in handy. I travel for work so it was enough to get me to the other end of the country and back, plus hotel etc, while leaving cash also with DH for groceries etc. Later when there was a payment system outage it was also handy - didn’t need so much but better safe than sorry.

Obviously it is “out of reach” for some, but the majority of families in the U.K. have savings. For me it’s worth the £30 or so I am giving up in interest to keep it handy.

So going to a hotel without prepayment and paying in cash? Even if the owners were my siblings, I wouldn't do that in a banking and outage emergency.

PlasticineKing · 03/03/2026 19:53

I’m very fortunate to have a well stocked pantry, and this is part of the reason why. You don’t say how old your LO is but worth thinking about their needs too, as in do you need formula and appropriate bottled water to make it up? Or a manual breast pump (if there were to be power cuts)? And to be able to grab their comforter/most needed things in a heartbeat, because things can turn on a coin. I don’t say this as a prepper, but as someone who wants to keep her family safe and well in as many situations as possible. We looked at this at work recently, it’s very interesting.

Mad countries with a nuclear bomb? Do you mean like America?

Possibly different packaging helps. I'm gonna buy some dried apricots and see

If WW3 starts and we are all nuked, I'll just be annoyed in the few seconds before the bomb hits that I wasted a lot of money saving into a pension!

12 months in its packet, up to 6 months once opened if put in an air tight container. But I eat plenty generally, so would just rotate ‘stock’ in the cupboards

Kalanthe · 03/03/2026 21:41

You should be able to survive a few days without leaving the house. To me the most likely scenario is a power outage like the one that happened in Spain recently.

I stocked up years ago:

  • Food for a few days
  • A few 6 packs of large water
  • Toilet paper 😂 learned my lesson from 2020
  • Battery-operated radio and lots of batteries
  • Straws that filter water (got carried away here)
  • Painkillers, sanitary pads

Everything apart from food is in the loft so it’s not in the way. Hopefully I’ll never need to use it!

Oh okay, that's good then. I will buy some :) I am lacking in nutrients at the moment including iron, which apricots contain. I am vegetarian and need to eat better I as I am always low on nutrients

Britain is so small in the great scheme of things. What concerns me is their targets (whoever "they might be)". Targets I imagine are all over this small island. And Starmer has already been sucked in.
It's scary living in London. (Buckingham Palace is totally another thread).
Sorry if this post sounds muddled but I feel afraid. (Maybe should be another thread).

Natsku · 04/03/2026 04:16

This site has a lot of info. I didn't know you shouldn't let water go down the drain or flush the loo during a power outage!
https://72tuntia.fi/en/

Last big storm in my country a few months ago cut power for days in parts of my town including half the estate I live on (I luckily live in the half that is served by underground power lines - just a few houses up on my street has a separate system with above ground powerlines)

72 hours - 72 tuntia

Yeah I did notice last time I looked like a year ago if I remember correctly they were kind of pricey so I didn't buy them. How much are they costing these days ?

Me too and trying to scrimp and save to save some sort of basic inheritance for my kids!

Anyone got a suggestion for a battery light? Are the stick on ones enough?

My favourite Crazy Jack ones went up from £2.50 to £5 recently for not very many, they were a treat at £2.50 but £5 is a step too far. You can get cheaper brands but they are still quite expensive. I googled out of interest and there was frosts in Turkey last year and prices did go up, there was a report from Dec25 about it so I guess that's why.

There will be blowback. The 7/7 bombers didn't say they were attacking Britain because of some misguided intepretation of the Koran, they said they were attacking Britain because they wanted complacent British people to feel what war was like since they were complicit in Britain's illegal attack on Iraq and Afganistan.

Yeah quite!

I might go and buy myself a new car instead of it sitting there in my account so I can retire earlier.
