Anyone starting to wonder if they should be making a little ‘emergency inventory’

Don’t laugh! 😆

I mean I’m not overly worried about there suddenly being ww3 and bombs dropping above our heads next week. But hey, natural disasters, some variant of a Covid drama put upon us again, one day one of the mad countries with some nuclear weapon may surprise us. God knows, nothing surprises me lately with the stuff going on. The trust in our politicians and well our own royal family member of two shows these people just say what they think we want to hear or need to hear. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.
The world seems to be pretty balmy lately.

But one thing since becoming a mum is you do think more about ‘what if’.

I didn’t have kids when Covid happened. And I didn’t really buy into it as much as others (I know we all have our own viewpoints on it).
But you’ve got to admit the world is feeling a bit weird lately.

So I’d love to hear what others would in a worst case scenario think they’d want or put in an emergency suitcase or keep stocked at home or whatever.

It can be light hearted or serious.. enlighten me 🙃

Lockdowns showed how easily supply chains can be knocked into anarchy so after that, I started to prep a bit. I have a large storage box in a cupboard which has some basic tinned goods, pasta, matches, candles, a solar charger and some water purification tablets. Because we’re campers we’ve also got a camping stove and torches etc. War and global conflict aside, it’s entirely possible that a storm could knock out the power so with these basics, we’ve always got a few days supply of major stuff.

The problem wasn't so much the supply chains. It was that people were panic buying excesses and desperately wanting their usual food and brands. It wouldn't have killed anyone to have rice instead of pasta for a few days, long life milk instead of normal milk etc but people aren't willing to bend so then get agro when they can't get their usual. A few days, I couldn't get bread. So what! I just had crackers instead. Meh.

Morepositivemum · 02/03/2026 19:36

I put away a few goodies this week, during Covid I had goodies hidden for months in case all properly hit the fan and we really needed them as a pick me up. Also have all chargers together, a really good light constantly charged, gas for camping cooker etc. saying that are in Ireland and if anything happens we’re pretty much dead tbh, sounds awful but we are

ifonly4 · 02/03/2026 19:53

We've always got a supply of tealights, candles, matches, batteries (for torches and camping lights), long life goods like cans, rice, pasta, long life milk, camping stove and cannisters (cannisters won't be wasted as we go camping), basic first aid items and toilet rolls - I don't like to run out of these things, or just have them anyway. Always have a few bottles of wine somewhere as well. Having said that, if something so bad happened that all that wouldn't support us for more than a week or do, life would be pretty dire.

TheHillIsMine · 02/03/2026 20:03

This is making me worried as I live alone and wouldn't know where to start if the power went off never mind internet. I don't have a huge amount of food in but could definitely manage for a few days. Before I lived alone I could have fed us all for a really long time. I'm wondering if I should get extra dog and cat food?My son has messaged to ask if I have a full tank of petrol as it will be going up. I wanted to get some today anyway as half a tank and I use a lot for work but I'm going tomorrow now.

I live on my own also. See my post above, I have the basics in the event of a prolonged power cut and a few odds and ends to see me through a couple of days. I'm not thinking any further out than that TBH, since everyone will be in the same boat then. Or that's my thinking anyway. Do not panic, little preparations just in case might be good.

damelza · 02/03/2026 20:16

I might get one of these..... What do you reckon? Would be great as I'm all electric apart from gas heating and in the event of days without power at least I'd get hot tea or something! A few spare canisters and good to go. I think they need to be used outdoors though, because of carbon monoxide, not sure. Does anyone know?

We have:

Garage - large bottles of water, tinned food, camping stove, torches
Utility Room - first aid kit with medicines
Study - key documents in a fire proof pouch. £1k in cash.
Bedroom - grab bag with change of clothes, passport, copy of key documents, cash, spare credit card, charger, spare meds, toiletries

I like to think that covers it without getting carried away.

GentleSheep · 02/03/2026 20:30

I've been prepping for the past decade and always have about 2 weeks of supplies on hand. I basically prep for ill health, bad weather, power outages. Not war. I think none of us could realistically prep for that, but at least having a couple of weeks of supplies means you wouldn't need to be caught up in panic buying.

If a nuclear weapon hits the UK a few spare bog rolls won’t help anyone.

😂

Yes you must use these outdoors!

tutugogo · 02/03/2026 20:45

If you can afford to (not everyone can) keeping 3-5 days of food that doesn’t require refrigeration is smart, it covers mundane eventualities like not feeling well enough to go to the shop or the truck that refills the local supermarket breaking down (they tend to restock daily)

dontjustdontdoit · 02/03/2026 20:48

Genuine question - if everything REALLY does go crazy would cash help?

If all systems go down then would any wholesalers accept cash anyway?

Gowlett · 02/03/2026 20:48

Stuff like this never crosses my mind.
I’m barely organised day to day…
Nevermind prepped for a war situation.
Fully aware we could be affected.

LittleGreenDragons · 02/03/2026 20:49

I'm not hugely into prepping but I have

Pillar candles and matches (big enough as a heat source as well as light)
Medication
Toilet rolls
Cash
Random tins such as tuna, soup, fruit, vegetables, rice puddings
Random dried such as pasta, rice, cup a soup, sugar, porridge, teabags, coffee
Freezer has loaf of bread and small milk
Large bottle of water, would have a couple more but I hope to move soon and they are heavy!
Accessible blankets

I need a wind up radio and I need to charge up a powerbank (thanks for the reminder!)

But my biggest nod to prepping is a little gas camping stove and a pack of 4 cannisters because I've realised I would kill for a mug of tea in a crisis so I need to boil water somehow!!

Agree with pp who said it's government advice to have enough for 3 days in an emergency. Sweden and Germany also give similar advice. Emergency = floods, next doors house burning down, local pylon falling down and not necessarily war.

Would a few days power cut really be that dramatic? It's going into spring so you'd have day light for a large proportion of the day anyway and surely have neighbours you could share torches and candles with if needs be. I live alone too and don't see why it would be a massive concern.

If it hits, am going to get near to the centre of it as possible. I remember 'Where the wind blows' film.

And yeah, not a second thought over how many loo rolls I may have!

The uk gov (and many other countries, the Swedish one is an interesting read) all have leaflets on what should you have at home, not so much just for war but any situation really, from powercuts to any similar emergency.
I always try to keep some water, battery packs fully charged and some solar lights, some none perishable food, things to think about are copies of all your paperwork, cloud, usb, photocopies etc. https://rib.msb.se/filer/pdf/30874.pdf https://prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

We live near something that'd be a target - during the Cold War, thats exactly what my dad used to say, get in the car and drive as close as we can. That was comforting as a small child!

Today they’ve told locals not to be alarmed to see armed soldiers at the entrances, and that they’ll be testing their emergency responses at different times of day…Interesting times indeed.

Meadowfinch · 02/03/2026 21:04

I have my normal cold weather pack - 6 cartons of UHT milk, plenty of dried goods, 8 tins of tomatoes, tinned fruit & veg, assorted meat & fish in the freezer, a sack of flour and enough yeast for 6 months. There's a dozen jars of home made jam in the cupboard and next door keeps chickens. And I have a shed full of logs and a well.

I think we'd be OK for a month. I have a solar charger for my phone, although that does require it not to rain 24/7.

Beyond that it might get a bit desperate.

Pricesandvices · 02/03/2026 21:15

The preppers board meant I prepped for Brexit but it was actually used for covid. I was all done a couple of weeks before it got serious.
I keep some water too. It doesn't take up much space but it would buy 48hrs of peace.
