Anyone starting to wonder if they should be making a little ‘emergency inventory’

Don’t laugh! 😆

I mean I’m not overly worried about there suddenly being ww3 and bombs dropping above our heads next week. But hey, natural disasters, some variant of a Covid drama put upon us again, one day one of the mad countries with some nuclear weapon may surprise us. God knows, nothing surprises me lately with the stuff going on. The trust in our politicians and well our own royal family member of two shows these people just say what they think we want to hear or need to hear. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.
The world seems to be pretty balmy lately.

But one thing since becoming a mum is you do think more about ‘what if’.

I didn’t have kids when Covid happened. And I didn’t really buy into it as much as others (I know we all have our own viewpoints on it).
But you’ve got to admit the world is feeling a bit weird lately.

So I’d love to hear what others would in a worst case scenario think they’d want or put in an emergency suitcase or keep stocked at home or whatever.

It can be light hearted or serious.. enlighten me 🙃

If a nuclear weapon hits the UK a few spare bog rolls won’t help anyone.

princesseauxchampignons · 02/03/2026 17:50

No.

Lighthearted as you like there are innocent families caught up in this.

go and fill up your car if it makes you feel better but being ‘light hearted’ about this is very unreasonable.

Bonkers1966 · 02/03/2026 17:56

Government guidance is that we should all have a basic prep pack in the case of power outage and other modem day issues. Nothing to do with nukes and bog rolls. There's plenty of guidance on it online. I started with a small radio in case we lose the mobile network for a day and have no information. You sound like a sensible person.

I said light hearted so I didn’t get the mumsnetters that say why do you worry so much blah blah blah. But either way you’re going to be bashed on here if you worry or not.

And I’m not talking about bog rolls either.

I genuinely had this thought today and didn’t want to come across as a worry’er on here and get bashed.

But I’ll admit I do worry. As I’m all my LO has. No extended family. And there’s me thinking do we need to one day have gas masks kept in the house or what.

There’s innocent families caught up in this around the world - so would you / do you worry or not?

We are by no means preppers but as long as I can remember have had emergency boxes in the attic. My parents (diplomats in the eighties, and one the child of a Jewish refugee, so not unfamiliar with shit hitting fans) taught me to do this.

I can’t quite remember what we have in them but certainly enough water for a week, pet food, non perishable human food, loo roll (obvs) wind up radios and torches, medication etc. We also keep logs in, and a gas stove.

In the study we have a bag with cash, passports, essential medication, banking details etc.

It’s pretty easy to get together and doesn’t eat anything. My concern is more a massive cyber attack knocking out infrastructure than being nuked.

Thanks for this. This is good advice.

And appreciate the non bashing.

Cover over to the peppers topic if you want to discuss and avoid ridicule

These are good things to think of. I do remember a time when no one could get any money out. Cash is always a good idea, passports in same place. Good tips on other things. Thanks

I remember on here pre Covid people talked about an OFRS. That stood for oh fuck rucksack I think?

maybe it was for storms/floods? I never did it.

there is a preppers board on here but it just made me sad so I never ventured back!

What’s the peppers topic?

The peppers board isn't sad. We are mainly about being sensible with very little about zombies and nuclear bombs

Go to the topics list and you'll find a whole board called preppers

If you have medicine in the attic but can't remember what's up there, I imagine it's out of date!

Ahh I’ll have a look 🥴 not sure I’m in the right mood today to go down a rabbit hole on that. Will look tomorrow.. Thanks. Also turning the news off til then. The world just feels something else recently.

We are definitely going to see some problems with getting food on our shelves and no doubt filling up the car is going to get problematic. Those are the main Covid - like issues I forsee.

This is very sensible and we have a similar set up. Agree that a cyber attack on infrastructure is worth preparing for and the items you’d want for that cover a few different scenarios (any power/water outages, lockdowns etc). Not much point prepping for a nuke!

greenteaandlimes · 02/03/2026 18:07

I think it’s just sensible to always have some emergency items on hand. As PP have said, there are guides online.

DelinquentSnails · 02/03/2026 18:08

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy DH does the odd inventory when he goes up to change the mouse machines (the squeaky ones that do nothing to deter mice.)

He once suggested we put more kibble up there as it would ‘work for both dogs and teenage boys’

I said it made me sad - not that the posters are sad. You all have my greatest respect but it’s not for me.

Yes power outage is something I was thinking about if ever.
LO’s meds need refrigerating.
no access to charging phones and or having WiFi.

It’s things like that that got me thinking.

I’ll do some looking online just to wise up a bit and get in the know of what would be needed if ever in situation like that

I've always been a bit paranoid! And I stocked up at the turn of the millennium with soup and candles... my friends thought I was crackers and I did eat soup for months afterwards!
Nevertheless, I have in my house: fake candles that flick on with a battery, as well as a stock of batteries. I always stock up with tins of things, and gradually use them and replace. A bit of cash (or gold) tucked away is always handy in emergencies. Believe it or not, I also have some Iodine Capsules tucked away for potential radiation poisoning. I always know where the passports and driving licences are.
But with a healthy dose of reality I know if there is a big event, there's not much we'll be able to do. Anyway maybe make an emergency list for yourself so you feel prepared, there's a lot going on out there and many of us are concerned.

damelza · 02/03/2026 18:39

I've a drawer in the spare room with passports, a wind up radio that also works on solar and usb and has a torch, AND it can recharge devices. It's tiny and although I haven't used it yet the reviews are positive. Only cost £20. A big 20,000 power bank that I charge up once a month or so - if I remember ha! Those are in the event of a prolonged power cut.

I also have a head torch, paracetamol, and I'll buy water purifying tabs some day soon..... I wangled a spare month's supply of my meds during Covid so I have a month spare all the time now. That's very reassuring, it's not the same meds I got during Covid ha ha, I used them then and now have a month in advance all the time!

That's it for now. A few cans/tins of tuna, salmon, beef stew, and similar will have to keep me going. I'm not going to prep for a famine yet.

I doubt it.

comeonnowcrocodile · 02/03/2026 18:56

Lockdowns showed how easily supply chains can be knocked into anarchy so after that, I started to prep a bit. I have a large storage box in a cupboard which has some basic tinned goods, pasta, matches, candles, a solar charger and some water purification tablets. Because we’re campers we’ve also got a camping stove and torches etc. War and global conflict aside, it’s entirely possible that a storm could knock out the power so with these basics, we’ve always got a few days supply of major stuff.
