Does anyone else find tv sex and/or porn repulsive?

Is it just me which fast forwards or mutes and looks away for tv sex scenes?

This being so, obviously porn is not my thing either.

I long for the days when sex, if an essential part of the plot, was just implied without all the heaving and pumping.

I don’t find it in the least sexy, more cringe worthy.

I absolutely agree with you OP. I find looking at other people doing anything they wouldn't do in public on the street unpleasant and unsexy. I don't feel that way about written descriptions, but don't like looking at filmed versions.

The fact that they are work colleagues being forced to pretend to have sex just weirds me out. Plus, the filmmakers seem to think it’s for my benefit? Because apparently everyone wants sex scenes? It ruins films tbh.

The other thing I notice more and more in tv drama is scenes of people (usually women) sat on the toilet.
Why???

I was thinking the same thing recently - I’ve seen it a few times in the last few years, usually women peeing - and wonder if it’s just filmmakers trying to push the boundaries and be edgy.

In reality it’s weird and unnecessary, and adds nothing to the story or the character.

I do feel sorry for younger, or unestablished actresses - there must be so much pressure to have to do a nude scene or go topless or desgrade yourself in some way for youe ‘craft’, it’s almost expected now.

Pepperedpickles · 02/03/2026 15:50

I feel exactly the same, more so since I hit menopause (I went into early menopause aged 37, I’m now 45). Absolutely can’t stand it and it completely puts me off watching things.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 02/03/2026 16:11

I don't watch porn but I do love a good steamy sex scene.

It’s just contrived and boring. 🤷‍♀️

"If I’m honest I don’t want to see an actress’ prosthetic anus during the throes of childbirth or of passion. If that makes me a prude so be it"

It's for that reason alone that I only watch Homes Under the Hammer and Antiques Road Trip.

And a bit of Escape to the Country ❤️😊😁

Joystir59 · 02/03/2026 16:52

I love the sex in Bridgerton which centres female pleasure. Bridgerton has an intimacy coordinator working with the actors on all scenes that involve intimacy, to ensure the actors are onboard and comfortable and that the scenes are blocked in the same way as all other scenes.

Luckyingame · 02/03/2026 17:18

Oh yes, absolutely, since about the age of 42.
Porn, definitely.
TV sex - all that smacking they are told to do, panting, quick "sex" against a wall or whatever - don't know if I feel more repulsed or enraged.
Walk out of the room or fast forward.

I’m with you, I don’t mind a subtle sex scene, kissing etc with rest implied. I think films like atonement are good examples of this, you know they had super hot sex in the library without gratuitous nudity. I do not need to see anyone’s breasts, arse or genitals. There was an actress over the weekend talking about how she’d had to use a prosthetic arsehole for her new movie. Not porn. Mainstream. Why is that necessary?

What the hell!! What film was she in?

In all fairness a pp pointed out that was a childbirth rather than a sex scene. I still find it all a bit unnecessary. You have to feel a bit v sorry for the make up artist as well!

RainsFall · 02/03/2026 19:07

I’m not a fan either. I find sex scenes in films and tv incredibly awkward to sit through, I know that’s a me issue but I can’t help it. It’s especially awkward if watching with family. It does ruin my enjoyment and puts me off watching something again.

They never really add anything of value to a plot, implying that sex happened without having to show everything in all its glory is more than adequate 99% of the time in my opinion. The noises, the movements, how it’s usually the woman bearing all whilst the man gets to keep at least some modesty, all of it is maximum cringe for me.

Porn is awful no matter which way you look at it, a horrible, degrading and exploitative industry rife with human trafficking that normalises extreme and dangerous sex acts and fetishes. If the whole industry disappeared tomorrow I’d be thrilled.

TeaAndTrumpet · 02/03/2026 19:10

Can’t stand them. If I’m alone I mainly ignore them. DH fast forwards. But my main issue is that it stops us watching so many things that would be great to watch as a family. No way do our teen DC want to sit on the couch next to us watching that. Even kissing scenes are difficult.

I was thinking the other day that I’d love it if we could get the “tv version” of films or shows. Like when they used to cut the worse bits out of movies so they would be allowed to show them on tv (not sure if that existed in the uk, I grew up abroad). Sometimes it jarred a bit, but on the whole you rarely noticed - which shows how unnecessary they were.

Never thought I’d see the day when I looked back fondly on censorship 🙁

Hotafternoon · 02/03/2026 19:25

I don't like it either, I fast forward all the time as I can't be bothered with the slurping noises and seeing the tongues and open mouths clashing together. Yuk! 😱

CupidLeftyStunt · 02/03/2026 19:32

I absolutely hate it.

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/03/2026 19:43

I've always viewed the need for graphic sex on tv/ film to show lack of talent in actors/ director/ producer. It's far more erotic in the implied.
I find it cringy and repulsive in equal measure.

SpigTheFish · 02/03/2026 19:51

The problem with sex on TV is that it's rarely sexy. It's voyeuristic yes, but not sexy. The problem, as always is the focus of the male gaze instead of sensuality.

Porn is just horrible - it's naked, sex-based violence.

BigBangSherry · 02/03/2026 19:53

I find tv sex boring and cringe and wish they didn’t show it.

I loathe porn.

OtterlyAstounding · 02/03/2026 20:16

Add me to the long list of commenters who thinks porn is a horrendous, misogynistic, disgusting industry.

Also, TV/film sex that's more than a tasteful suggestion is unnecessary and just makes me cringe. It's usually just unrealistic, voyeuristic, painfully drawn out, and makes otherwise potentially good programmes impossible to watch with my teenagers (who don't want to sit down with mum and dad to watch two people heaving and moaning while mostly naked, for two minutes by the clock).

heartsinvisiblefury · 02/03/2026 20:28

It’s when they’re always having sex up against a wall that it starts to get annoying. And always just after they’ve closed their door.

OSTMusTisNT · 02/03/2026 20:30

Don't ever watch Outlander - that has both DH and I cringing with all the jiggy jiggy.

AgentPidge · 02/03/2026 21:33

BlueSlate · 02/03/2026 13:09

I've told my partner I'm not watching any sex/nudity in films unless the naked exposure of the sexes is equal.

Female nudity and female exposed sex scenes where the male nudity is obscured? I'm obviously not the intended audience 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I avoid it in general necause it's just dull and awkward. I dont watch anything with sex in the opening scenes because it's usually a declaration that it's a shit film with a shit plot, poor acting and a dubious script but, don't worry, you'll get to see plenty of TnA 🥱

Be careful what you wish for! I've been re-watching The White Lotus and there's some totally gratuitous displaying of willies. Jason Isaacs said (I think it was on Graham Norton) that he'd worn a prosthetic one. It was ginormous!

AshHeart · 02/03/2026 21:40

I fast forward past most TV/film sex scenes too. They're mostly boring and add nothing to the storyline. It's titillation for some viewers I suppose and sex always sells.

halfpastten · 02/03/2026 22:09

Agree OP. What was once edgy is now just lazy and boring.

Usernameunavailableagain12 · 02/03/2026 22:11

I hate it. It’s so unnecessary

Wildviolet · 02/03/2026 23:09

Having read all of these responses I wonder why tv writers keep putting all the sex in?

What makes them think women viewers want to see it?

Are there focus groups carried out or is it just men assuming that because they want to look at sex we want it?

(Although I appreciate a few people here have said their husbands hate it too)

There does seem to be some degree of shaming if you say you don't like anything sexual these days so it is nice to have a bit of solidarity on this thread.
