What time on average do your 8yr olds go to bed?

DD8 has taken to waking at 5.30-5.45am every day without fail for the past few months. Ideally we’d like her to be waking at 6.30-7.

We’ve tried a gro clock, setting an alarm on her alexa, but once she’s up she’s up and playing noisily in her room or going downstairs to watch tv which disturbs everyone else.

Occasional late nights don’t seem to affect the wake up time, so I’m thinking we need to shift her regular bedtime later.

She has been typically going to bed around 7pm. This weekend we’ve trialled 8pm. So far no change in the get up time but we will continue to see if it takes a while to have an impact.

So, when do your 8yr olds tend to go to bed?

My 8 yr old has autism and sleep has been a constant battle. He begins bedtime at about half 7 and is asleep by half 9.

NickMarlow · 01/03/2026 21:09

I'm theory my 7.5yo is in bed at 7.45. In reality, it is often at least 8.15 before she's settled and I can leave the room and hope she goes to sleep
...!

In bed for 8 and asleep between 8-8:30ish on a good night!

My 9 yo sleeps about 11-12 hours

Tahoe11 · 01/03/2026 21:12

My 8 year old usually does 830-6 or 630. Sometimes he's awake until 9. I'm not sure he's the best example though, he has always disliked sleep, famously giving up all his naps by 12 months old!

I think different children have different sleep needs. If she seems fine during the day, she's probably getting enough.

newbie202020 · 01/03/2026 21:12

8.45pm, wakes about 6.45am

Onemoret1me · 01/03/2026 21:13

8pm and wakes about 7:30

pteromum · 01/03/2026 21:14

Big readers. So asleep maybe 9, bed 830. Later weekends and holidays. Wake 7-730.

Laiste · 01/03/2026 21:14

From 7 yrs onwards i've tried to stick to a half 7ish upstairs and brush teeth and story with a view to actually going to bed at 8 / half 8.

Seems to work.

marcyhermit · 01/03/2026 21:16

We aim for 8.30pm, she's usually up about 7, sometimes 7.30.

Patty101 · 01/03/2026 21:17

Typically in bed by 8pm and reads until 8.30pm at the latest. Out of bed around 7.30am. However, I think he takes quite a while to get to sleep as is often still awake at 9ish. So maybe we need to push his bedtime back a little bit, maybe we're sending him up a bit too soon. Hmmm 🤔

8.30 for 7.30 wake up

FASDE1517 · 01/03/2026 21:19

Usually 8:30/8:45 - 6:30/7 (reading in room if awake before 7)

Whereland · 01/03/2026 21:20

7pm seems v early for an 8 year old. Mine is in his bed reading by 8pm, asleep anywhere between 8.30-9.30. Awake at 7/7.30

OhBettyCalmDown · 01/03/2026 21:21

7pm is very early for an 8 year old. Mine was about 8:30 at that age. Awake at 6-6:30ish

TimSamandLulu · 01/03/2026 21:22

He falls asleep between 9.30 and 10pm usually. Wakes between 7 and 8am. He’s never needed a lot of sleep compared to the average for his age.

MssngvwaIs · 01/03/2026 21:24

8.15ish. Only ever went to bed at 7pm when they very first dropped naps around age 3. By age 4 it was between 7.30 and 8pm. Gets up about 6.30-6.45. I teach LKS2 and think a 7pm bedtime at age 8 is really quite unusual.

LeopardPants · 01/03/2026 21:24

7pm is so early for an 8 year old! Mine is normally asleep around 9.30 … Wouldn’t even have time for dinner with a 7pm bedtime! I think they need less sleep by this point as his friends are similar

Amiunemployable · 01/03/2026 21:25

DS 7 goes to bed at 8:30 on school nights. So probably asleep by 9pm.

Weekends he can stay up later. 10-11 ish.

But he's a great sleeper. We have to wake him up for school at 7:30am. And he can easily sleep until 9am on weekends.

shellyleppard · 01/03/2026 21:26

Mine had to be in bed by 7.30 pm on a school night. Light's out an hour later. Saturday night they could stay up till 9pm.....

Thecomfortador · 01/03/2026 21:29

He would usually be asleep by 9, I'm trying to bring it forward a bit as I think he could do with more sleep but my 8 and 10 year olds go to bed at the same time and 10 yo just takes longer to get to sleep. Sometimes we're later, sometimes we're earlier.

Startrekobsessed · 01/03/2026 21:39

8-8.30pm, sometimes not actually asleep until after 9. But definitely in bed by 8.30. Up around 6.30. 7 feels very early for an 8 year old, can’t even get my 5 year olds down at that time!

Caterina99 · 01/03/2026 21:44

9ish. Gets up about 7.30ish for school.

Goinggreymammy · 01/03/2026 21:46

8yr DD is rarely in bed before 8, most often 8:30 depending on what activities she and her siblings have that evening, and is often still awake at 9 or 9:15.
I wake her around 7:15.
At the weekends she would sleep till 7:30/8.

There's no way on earth I would allow her downstairs at 6am. She could come snuggle with me and might fall back asleep, or would have to just lie in bed playing with her Teddies and dolls. Nobody is allowed downstairs before 7:30 at weekends.

TheLette · 01/03/2026 21:50

In bed for 7.30/8 but reads/messes around until gone 9/9.30 half the time. Wakes at 7ish.
