Carrying a purse

Do you still carry your money/cards around in a purse?

After having my bank account hacked the only way I could use my account was with Apple Pay. I've now received a new bank card in the post, but not sure whether I need to 'risk' carrying around the card at all when paying by phone is safer and more convenient.

I'm early 60's though and appreciate I might be behind the curve on this!

What do you do?

OP posts:

Yes I do. I'm what way is paying by phone safer?

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 28/02/2026 08:11

Very rarely. Mostly I go with just my phone in one pocket and my keys in the other, no need for a handbag. It's very freeing.

PurpleFlower1983 · 28/02/2026 08:12

Rarely.

Yes I carry my card because I work in a shop and fairly frequently customers paying with their phone are required to insert their card, at least once a week, it’s very embarrassing for the customer who hadn’t got a card with them.

Because you have to use biometric data to activate the card.

How did you get hacked OP? I don’t typically carry cards with me, my purse is in my work bag but that’s only so I can carry my ID and other stuff that I may occasionally need. When I’m out and about for normal shop trips or around town I never do. Since the introduction of ApplePay really I’ve never been in a position where I’ve needed a physical card which is a fair few years now especially because there is no purchase limit.

OvernightBloats · 28/02/2026 08:22

I don't use my phone to pay.

I always carry a purse which has a selection of cards and cash. There have been a couple of occasions where shops have been unable to take card transactions and carrying cash has been very handy.

It's not a good idea to rely on one method because sometimes that method fails!

I have never been prompted to use my card when using my phone to pay.
I know with card contactless you need to insert the card after every n contactless payments, but I don’t think that’s the case with phone payment.
I rarely carry my card. It’s more likely to be a problem if I don’t have any cash rather than my card.

Highlandgal · 28/02/2026 08:28

I’m a similar age to you. I rarely carry a purse, just depends on what I’m doing. I use Apple Pay. I do have a physical card in my phone case just in case phone payment fails.

7238SM · 28/02/2026 08:29

I haven't used a purse since pre covid. My phone case has slots for all my cards and a few notes. I don't pay for anything with my actual phone.

mazedasamarchhare · 28/02/2026 08:32

Small wallet, I don’t do handbags, so this just goes in my pocket with my keys! Phone in other pocket. If jeans don’t have decently large pockets, I don’t buy them…dunno why men get to have decent pockets and not women!

Doggymummar · 28/02/2026 08:33

I'm younger and wouldn have a clue how to use my phone to pay for things. Is i PayPal? I set up a PayPal yesterday as my card was compromised and Ocado needed an alternative form of payment. Food arrived so I guess I did it correctly. But paying by phone, not a scooby

notmuchtoit · 28/02/2026 08:38

Yes. I think it's a bit daft to keep your card in your phone case. Or to just rely on a phone to pay. Lose your phone and you have lost your cards as well. Plus I work on a till sometimes and peoples phones often fail.

FourForksSake · 28/02/2026 08:38

I default to Apple Pay as a rule. The only place I can’t use it is to pay at pump at Tesco petrol station. I keep £20 in my phone case for emergencies. Never had to use it.

This is what I do. I am resisting using my phone for everything but I suppose the day will come… I went out the other day and forgot my phone and glasses, it was fine but definitely a little annoying. Once you’re an old bag, you must use a card for public transport as it’s a Freedom Pass

I carry cards and don't have any payment options on my phone. I don't have online banking on my phone either. There is no BACs transfer that can't wait until I get home and do it from my tablet. We have a local unmanned petrol station which is always much cheaper than anywhere else. It is amusing to watch people drive up and point their phone at the screen to prepay and then realise you have to insert a physical card ( which they don't have because their entire life is on their phone )
.

Iloveeverycat · 28/02/2026 09:37

I only carry cards. I don't have banking on my phone. I work in retail and the amount of phones that payments don't go through so you ask them do they have the card with them and they don't. They have to leave all their shopping behind.

I have to say with phone payments it’s usually because the person doesn’t have enough money in their account. They won’t say that of course. Banks don’t block phone payments because it is a safer payment method than a physical card so it’s more likely to be prompted to insert card and authenticate with PIN when you’re tapping a card than anything else.

LVhandbagsatdawn · 28/02/2026 10:24

I have a purse. I have no intention of setting up phone payments.

(Insofar as possible) I resist efforts to streamline everything onto a phone. Far too many horror stories about people who have their phones stolen and they've got their entire lives on there.

At least if someone steals my phone they can't start spending my money as well!

OblongPyjamas · 28/02/2026 10:30

I always feel like I “should” have a purse, but then I just end up carting it around and never using it. I always just use Apple Pay on my phone. I’ve never been asked to insert my card when using my phone to pay, in the many years I’ve been doing it.

tedibear · 28/02/2026 10:39

I hardly ever go out with my handbag now which I would have my purse in. Just my phone usually. I don’t see how it’s any safer though I just do it for convenience.
I only take my bag with my purse if I have a gift voucher in it or I want to have perfume, lipstick etc.

This never happens with Apple Pay.

At the most it will ask me to insert my phone pin number into my phone.

But it never asks me to produce the physical card and put it in the machine.

RedRiverShore6 · 28/02/2026 10:59

I use both my card and my phone to pay, whichever is easier in the moment and depending what bag I use. I always have a bag anyway as I need to carry quite a few things with me and don't like having bulging pockets so it depends which is easier to retrieve from my bag.

Westfacing · 28/02/2026 11:01

I haven't used a purse since pre-Covid times - usually pay by phone.

I use a small cross-body bag with usually a couple of £10 notes and a debit card but they are rarely used.

As an aside, when out and about I have my house keys and Freedom Pass in one pocket and mobile in the other - long gone are the days of lugging around a bag with everything in there!

RedRiverShore6 · 28/02/2026 11:02

I was behind some woman in M&S cafe she had already annoyed me so I laughed when her phone didn't work to pay and she and her DC had to put their food back as she had no other way of paying and they had to shove off.
