Carrying a purse

Do you still carry your money/cards around in a purse?

After having my bank account hacked the only way I could use my account was with Apple Pay. I've now received a new bank card in the post, but not sure whether I need to 'risk' carrying around the card at all when paying by phone is safer and more convenient.

I'm early 60's though and appreciate I might be behind the curve on this!

What do you do?

Yes I do.

onelumporthree · 28/02/2026 11:04

Yes, I've still got a purse. I don't use my phone for anything like that at all.

Growlybear83 · 28/02/2026 11:05

I always carry a purse with three debit cards and a couple of credit cards, and I always make sure I’ve got about £30 in cash in case the electronic payment systems are down. I very rarely use my phone to pay, and also dont always have my phone with me when I’m out anyway.

I have a purse. I have no intention of setting up phone payments.

(Insofar as possible) I resist efforts to streamline everything onto a phone. Far too many horror stories about people who have their phones stolen and they've got their entire lives on there.

At least if someone steals my phone they can't start spending my money as well!

They can’t use your Apple Pay if they steal your phone as it scans your face to authorise the payment or asks for your passcode. It wax a ballache during the mask mandate as I had to enter my code. I could set up a photo with a mask but it was too much bother. So unless they steal my face with my phone they can’t access my cards.

Meadowfinch · 28/02/2026 11:12

Yes, I carry a wallet with debit & credit card, and a small amount of cash.

If my bag was pinched they could get a limited amount but I can report cards stolen in seconds, and I could pay by bank transfer, and have a second account & card if necessary.

One of our employees had his phone snatched while it was logged in, and they cleaned him out. Phones are not necessarily safer.

It's more that they can get into your banking app than Apple Pay, for this reason I don't have banking apps on my phone, just on my iPad at home. Some banking apps are more secure than others though.

Yes I carry my card because I work in a shop and fairly frequently customers paying with their phone are required to insert their card, at least once a week, it’s very embarrassing for the customer who hadn’t got a card with them.

In all the years I’ve been using my phone to pay , pre Covid, I have never had to use my card when using my phone. They number is different o. The phone card anyway as Apple change the last 4 digits for security. I paid with Apple for a top in next. When I went to return it I tried to tap my card and the guy said ‘did you use Apple Pay as the cards don’t match?’ He then exppmsibrc that for security the last 4 digits in Apple pay are different…so it won’t mstch your physical card anyway. It’s really smart.

As Apple Pay is more secure I use it for any online purchases where available as then you dint enter your card details. Apple just pays it and the retailer has no access to your card info.

Again they’d need to steal my face to access mu banking apps as it’s biometric. They’d have to access my apps with my face or passcode then if they click my banking apps it scans for my face, if it doesn’t recognise my face which often happens if I’m lying on my bed. It asks for my passcode.

I would probably read up about it

hyggetyggedotorg · 28/02/2026 11:22

I still carry a purse & use my physical bank card for almost all in person transactions.

I do have Apple Pay set up on my phone & use it frequently for online purchases but have never used it in a shop, petrol station etc.

DS1 is 28 & won’t even use contactless. He was a victim of fraud once a few years ago & had his bank account emptied. I can’t even remember how it happened now, but ever since he’ll only use cash or chip & pin to pay.

I have and that’s why I use the banking apps I do as they need my face or passcode to access them. If I need to add anything I need to use a card reader to add a new code. I don’t allow OTP’s

My friend does this, goes out for a meal together with just phone and keys. I have a handbag with all my stuff. I often end up supplying her with things such as a tissue for a runny nose in the cold air, paracetamol when she has a headache, a pen, nail file etc. All sorts of useful things that I carry in my bag! The most annoying thing it when she needs coins for something such as buying a programme at the theatre which only accepted cash!

We laugh about it but she still refuses to carry a handbag.

Ariela · 28/02/2026 13:01

I don't do banking on my phone, I do have cards and cash, but my purse is tiny - only has room for a few cards and a bit of cash (all my loyalty cards are on the phone but no payment ones). I almost always wear jeans with big pockets, keys and phone in one front one, purse in the other. Folded flat tissue in left hand rear. Dog poo bags or anything else I might need go in right rear pocket, bigger things like comb stay in car.
If I wear a dress (most have pockets but I feel are less secure than jeans) I do have a very small satchel style cross over bag it's exactly big enough for phone purse keys comb one tissue and nothing else. Is about same size as my friend's purse!

MagneticSquirrel · 28/02/2026 13:19

Although I pay by phone 95%x I carry a spare card around with me in case contactless or apple pay fails (which I have seen in supermarkets) usually in my pocket. People could only pay with physical cards or cash, lots of abandoned shopping.

I have paid exclusively by Apple Pay for several years ,
I don’t think I’ve ever been asked for my card

GameOfJones · 28/02/2026 13:31

I carry a small wallet with a couple of cards, a £20 note, a plaster and book of stamps in it. 90% of the time I pay using my phone but occasionally it hasn't worked and I've needed to use my debit card. DH has Apple Pay and his seems to work all the time but I've had occasional issues with Google Wallet. Nothing to do with how much money is in the account as I'm never overdrawn.....it just seems to be one of those things so I'd never want to solely rely on my phone.

The plaster in my wallet has also been useful occasionally..... especially when out with DDs!

Miranda65 · 28/02/2026 13:33

I still use a wallet with cards (don't usually have cash) - not just bank & credit cards, but other random stuff, eg memberships.
In fact, I've never used my phone to pay for anything. I feel the opposite to the OP, as I think having everything on my phone is riskier - what if it's lost or stolen? And although I use online banking, I refuse to download a bank app to my actual phone, for the same reason.
I'm sure I'll eventually drag myself into the 21st century, just not yet!

FeralWoman · 28/02/2026 13:48

Purse and physical cards here. The only time I’ve used my phone to pay was when I accidentally left my credit card at home. I’d had it out to buy something online and had forgotten to put it back in my purse. I didn’t have any cards set up on my phone and couldn’t remember my Apple password so DH had to find my password and tell it to me so I could set up Apple Pay. It was really annoying using my phone to pay. Much faster and easier to use a card.

I’ve seen plenty of people not be able to pay with their phone and a shop assistant has had to ask if they have a physical card to use instead.

I also carry cash. Many places charge a transaction fee for using a card (I’m not in the UK) and that annoys me so I use cash instead. Not only that, if the banking systems go down for a few hours or there’s a power blackout then at least I can still purchase a small amount of things.

I carry a handbag too. It contains my purse, keys, phone, lip balm, pain relief, antihistamine, hand sanitiser, tissues, hairbrush, mints and other useful things like that.

RampantIvy · 28/02/2026 14:40

@RedRiverShore6 how can they access the banking app without knowing the passcode?

Don't have Apple pay. Don't have an iPhone.

If I am going out for the day I will carry a small handbag so that I can also carry tissues, lipstick, paracetamol etc, but if I am just popping to Tesco I just take my phone which is in a case that contains my bank card, bus pass, driving licence and a £20 note.

I keep all my store cards and my bank card in google wallet in my Android phone.

maximist · 28/02/2026 14:47

I’ve not carried my purse or cards for years - I always use my watch or my phone to pay, and have never had any problems. I’ve never been asked to put my card in, that just isn’t a thing with Apple Pay. The only place where it’s a bit of a pain is Tesco petrol, where I have to go into the kiosk to pay, but I usually use Asda where I can pay with my phone at the pump.

If I had my purse stolen, my cards could be used for contactless payments, if someone steals my phone they’d need my face or pin to pay. My watch locks itself as soon as it’s taken off my wrist. All far more secure.

MrsClattenburg · 28/02/2026 16:59

I always take my card and phone out as my phone failed a few weeks ago and after trying 100 times, I had to leave my basket of food and slope off... 😟

Merestown · 28/02/2026 19:47

I carry a purse and I only use my phone to pay if I've forgotten my bank card or travel card, usually that happens about twice a year. I don't have the card on my phone wallet as it isn't in my name and I don't want it linked to me. I carry a small bag at all times even if I think I'm just popping to the shop, and I prefer to be prepared because I never know if I might want to/have to stay out for a longer period. I like to have lip balm, lip stick, painkillers, mirror, various keys, cash, reusable bag, various membership and discount cards, Freedom Pass, pen etc with me. It all gets used and I don't want to have to think about what exactly I need each time I leave the house and out it into pockets, it's easier for me to grab my bag and go.
