Lammy demonstrated his ignorance again by stating in an interview this morning that Cyprus is a member of NATO, which it isn't. He's a liability - pretty much like the rest of Labour's ministers.

redange · 06/03/2026 09:52

David Lammy is Deputy Prime Minister and we are in a Crisis regarding Defence of a vital airbase in Cyprus and the Deputy Prime Minister does not know of the Status of the Island you are mandated to defend. This, is in the terms of the contract for using RAF Akritori.

However, If Lammy is not sure before he speaks out he could always Google 'Wikipedia' to find out (joke) . However, if we just used Chat GPT and Wikipedia to make decisions I am sure we would get better policies than this collection of imbeciles

Blimey. Did the interviewer pick him up?

I had to avoid this morning, too irritating

EmeraldRoulette · 06/03/2026 10:08

😱😱😱😱 at David Lammy

The sense of chaos is just terrifying

I guess we have a lot of people to blame for our defences being so small though. It adds to my sense that the country hasn't been run in any meaningful way for several years now.

On the payment, I wouldn't be surprised if some end up using the legal process to try to stay and still being given the money in the unlikely event that they leave.

Ffs. I also avoided the news this morning so didn't see it.
It speaks volumes that this govt thinks that sending Lammy out to do the media round was a good idea.

I just listened to Electoral Dysfunction on my walk. Ruth Davidson was furious at the govt's failure to protect Akrotiri. On Starmer, she said "what's the point of him".
The French have been boasting on sm that their frigate is now off the coast of Cyprus. I can't blame them for rubbing it in. Its embarrassing.

‘What’s the point of him’

Brilliant I thought the same yesterday.

Me too.

RD is usually quite measured about Starmer on that pod, presumably to save Harriet Harman's blushes.
Akrotiri has crossed a red line, she didn't hold back today! It was good to hear.

I find it disturbing in young people today that they are not prepared to look through the optics or look in to the details of a political ideology . In particular that the Green Party with frankly ludicrous ideas for anyone but the most idealistic and naive 'Sixth Form Pupil' .

The other issue I have with young people is continued avocation of Ill-informed beliefs This, being apparent when presented with logical non- contestable answers, young people are not prepared to consider disputing viewpoints. In short, it seems impossible to alter many young peoples opinions and 'naivety' once they have been indoctrinated. On a personal front i was a 'Rampant Socialist' for my first three months at University but a year later was the most passionate and strident member of the Conservative Party.

The Labour lot must be feeling it today, an anti Kemi thread and another pro Starmer thread started already. I’m surprised there’s still some to bat for him on here.

He hasn’t come of the ‘addresses to the nation’ well at all.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/03/2026 11:55

@redange so you can tell us then
Why did you become a socialist?
And then why did you stop being a socialist?

MrsStarskie · 06/03/2026 12:17

‘Every senior minister receives legal advice,’ says the former defence secretary Ben Wallace. ‘It is advice, it is not direction. However, under this government, Lord Hermer has become the power in the land where his advice becomes the rule.’ 'they feel that Hermer is essentially running the entire policy.’
This is emphasising how weak a politician Starmer is.

redange · 06/03/2026 12:22

Because I was at University and I was brought up in a financially well off family. Thus, I had a very 'upper middle class' life the only non Conservative and non well off being people I knew being a few girls at school who regarded me as off limits ! This, not being helped by my mother being regarded as a 'stuffy' old fashioned Grammar School teacher and my father a successful wealthy businessman.

On becoming a Socialist, I was a very 'young' 19 year old who due to their Autism was vulnerable and wanted to make friends 200 miles from home. Therefore, when befriended by other students (from similar backgrounds) wanted to show how my identity was different from my family. The, escape came when I came home at Christmas and my father highlighted to me what real Socialism would mean to me personally. No Car no Nice Clothes the family house having to be sold for tax . Very simple explanations for a simple 'naive' 1st year Politics Student. I actually believed, in a Socialist World everybody could have a fulfilling and rewarding life if only the 'Rich' would give up 95% of what they have.

The blame for that, I think, can be squarely laid at the door of Blair and his decree that 50 percent of school leavers should attend university. Suddenly technical colleges supporting apprenticeship schemes were deeply unfashionable, falling over themselves to apply for university status in order to fill their coffers by offering some very questionable degrees.

Blair isn't stupid; he would have recognised the difference between teachers and educators. If his master plan was to create almost an entire generation of students incapable of critical thought while considering themselves educated, it's worked (all IMO, of course).

redange · 06/03/2026 12:31

When, I entered University I was very naive and like a rabbit in the headlights.

On another front though: I don't know what it is but when i tell stories my writing becomes awful. This, is not a new problem but harks back to school.

I’m sure Lord Hermer would be delighted to organise that!

Yawn.

Have any of them mentioned the Iranian people yet? Thought not.

Kemi is making them twitch. I don't know why they think that slagging Kemi off will make Starmer more appealing. Desperate times if you've spent years advocating for Labour on here.

I do find it funny when the Starmer fan club say they no longer support Labour on one thread, then defend Starmer on another thread. 😂

Yep. Starmer can't even command his own war cabinet. Meanwhile our bases abroad were left vulnerable.
Do you have a link to this interview please? Love Ben W.

@TheNuthatch You posted it yesterday, The Tim Shipman piece in Spectator.

So, when Starmer repeatedly said ‘smash the gangs’, what he actually meant was ‘smash the middle class’ - who will end up paying for this latest madness.

We are a joke of a country, an utter joke.

We really are. I am having to come off MN and limit what I watch news wise as it sends me into a blind rage, Governments always do things we think are silly or annoying, it’s the nature of the beast, but this govt has taken everything to a new level. I hope their legacy is to go down as the worst govt in history.

EmeraldRoulette · 06/03/2026 14:57

@redange thank you for that

That's interesting. I was lucky because we had to study socialism as part of my history A-level. Then I talked to my parents about it and they explained a lot of stuff. They obviously saw all the problems in the 1970s.

You know how everything is a song lyric with me. People talking about Tony Blair makes me hear "the universe exploded as one man's lie" from The Fly by U2. I know that's an exaggeration 😂 so that's Tony Blair in my head and Keir Starmer is "the man who sold the world" which is funny because I didn't even know that song. It was you guys who told me there were loads of versions, I don't know where I got it from.

David Starkey was talking about the long march in the podcasts I listened to (I did eventually get to both of them).

These people who like to play chess with the future of the world - it's amazing what a long game they have. I find it very strange.

@Julen7 I was off-line Wednesday night and most of yesterday. I was out on Wednesday night, had a nice time although it was a work thing and I was really tired... I think people were making an effort to be cheerful and not talk about news. Good music at the venue, although they did have a slight blip in the playlist where they repeated a few songs.

then yesterday it was really sunny. I had to go and visit someone, but we sat outside in her garden and then I had a lovely long walk in the sunshine.

It does make you feel a lot more normal- switching off.

But I like talking to you guys 😚 that is blowing you all a kiss by the way 😂 I forget who it was who thought it was something else and I think sent it to her work?

TheNuthatch · 06/03/2026 14:58

I don't understand why Mahmood thinks that this will appeal to people tempted to vote Reform?
Labour offering £10K to migrants is a gift for Farage surely?

@Julen7 I don't blame you for stepping back. Same here today, just reading this thread only.
