This is really worrying

According to MN, Starmer was the second coming. All would be well if we all voted Labour.

Yep

And now he's not even coming second.

You Guv are getting some very weird Polling Results. None the less the fact that the Green Party are on our around 15% on most polls is extraordinary for a party that are suggesting ideas, that should not poll around 2-3% in a normal situation.

Another, thing I cannot fathom is how Reform and the Conservative Party are not polling around 60% together considering how absolutely bonkers the political 'left' are currently. For the record based on historical reference neither the current Conservative/Reform are in particular Right Wing.

However, it is perhaps we consider that the United Kingdom as a whole as never been a 'Conservative' country despite the fact that the Conservative Party has dominated Parliament. This, to suggest that the Political Right in the nature of the Conservative Party has never garnered more than about 44% of the vote 1979/19831987/2019. This meaning that in this country, there has always been a larger rump of people who vote on the left of the political system.

Thus, most polls put the combined Reform/Conservative vote around 46-48% which means in traditional terms the 'Right' is holding up well. I just cannot understand though that 'educated' people cannot comprehend that under any of the multitude parties of the left, the United Kingdom is heading towards 2nd World Status at an alarming rate !

I think state dependency is a factor. People reliant on the state are less likely to vote for a reduction,

And we have high dependency atm and the worst part is it could keep going up.

It’s not a straight correlation as some vote right anyway but I think at some point you get a left voting electorate unable to vote out of it as not enough are earning independently.

My 21 year old announced last night she will have to vote conservative. She would like to be a labour voter, but not with the current lot, and she read the Green manifesto and was shocked.

Not sure many people read the manifesto. Glad she isn’t voting on “vibes.”

Good for her. We all vote differently in our family. I encourage my dc to research and read what they are voting for and make up their own minds.

Same. It’s really important to me they vote in the way they want. I’ve read some ‘lifelong Labour’ posters say they’d ‘disown’ their dc if they voted differently. Absolutely ridiculous and damaging.

Although maybe they’ve changed a bit given how badly Labour are doing.

We are the same, I always tell DC “I’m right of centre but so-and-so in family is left, you must research and make your own mind up”. It does worry me with teen daughters that they say their friends are gong to vote Green, going to vote Reform etc. and I think it’s fairly obvious these youngsters are following a trend and have very little idea about these parties’ policies, or lack of. Frightening to me that they will be voting at 16 in next GE.

Whereistheejectbutton · 03/03/2026 12:07

I remember in 1997 asking a friend why she voted Labour (I’d voted Labour and was very excited) and she said it was because everyone else did…agree though, we don’t vote the same way and we have a lot of discussions about it.

TheNuthatch · 03/03/2026 12:40

I can't take Reeves seriously at all. 'Submarine Chancellor' is very apt.

Thanks for listening I can’t even on that one.

I doubt many are caring what she’s saying. Although I see unemployment will go up and growth down so that’s typically shite from Labour.

TheNuthatch · 03/03/2026 13:14

I didn't listen, switched her off when she started boasting about inflation falling again.

Good to know that unemployment is yet to peak. 🙄

I don’t blame you. Excruciating.

How is unemployment going up good again. Idiots.

I’ve read some ‘lifelong Labour’ posters say they’d ‘disown’ their dc if they voted differently. Absolutely ridiculous and damaging..

There was a thread on mn years ago when a poster said she was very upset as her dd’s new boyfriend or ds’s new girlfriend - I can’t remember which - voted Tory and she wasn’t sure if she should agree to meet the boy/girlfriend.
The reaction was as you might expect - ‘OMG I’d disown them/not let them cross the threshold/sit them down for a long and serious chat and hopefully they will see the error of their ways’ etc etc.
The thing is about these people who say they’d disown their dc if they voted Tory/reform - in the privacy of the voting booth they can vote for whom they want and just keep quiet.

I think the privacy of the voting booth is exactly what happened when Boris was voted in with a huge majority in 2019. If I recall correctly, the polls hadn't predicted that. Such a shame the Conservatives then went on a backstabbing spree and lost all credibility. If they'd behaved on got on with the job, we'd probably not have KS and his band of spiteful incompetents currently ruining the country.

JaneV1984Madness · 03/03/2026 14:03

@TheNuthatch me too and I always try and present both sides when talking to DC about stuff.

I'm excited they can vote it's a wonderful thing I wouldn't dream of trying to influence them in anyway. I probably won't even ask as it's private. Even DH and I barely discuss it

TheNuthatch · 03/03/2026 14:07

Nice pay rise of 5% for MPs.

IPSA's pay decision for 2026-27 includes a 1.5% benchmarking adjustment, as well as a 3.5% cost-of-living increase.

Only an 'optional' 3.5% rise for MP's staff though.

MPs' pay to rise by 5% to £98,599 a year from April

Westminster's expenses watchdog says MPs are dealing with higher levels of complex casework and abuse.

Same.
Its probably a good thing that DH and I are on different sides of politics. The dc are used to differing opinions and polite debate.

justasking111 · 03/03/2026 14:12

The MPs will need that pay rise to cover the tornado of price increases because of oil prices which the USA have admitted to their voters.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/03/2026 14:14

@TheNuthatch yes I remember you going to the protests. How nice for you to see the celebrations.

I wasn't posting on any political threads during the election, so I don't know how bad it was. Glad we have this thread. Thank you.

@DancingFerret yes so many things were screwed up by Boris Johnson. I really think KB should distance herself from that period and admit how many dreadful decisions were made- but there's probably a whole bunch of etiquette attached to it - I might have said that on here already.

RelativisticJet · 03/03/2026 16:55

Quelle surprise.

A London landlord has begun a wave of evictions ahead of new rules in May that will give renters protections against unjustified dispossessions.

Criterion Capital, founded by billionaire Asif Aziz, has served eviction notices to 130 residential units across its property portfolio, according to a company spokesperson. The company said it represented less than 5 per cent of their flats.

A prominent figure in London’s West End, Aziz has organised several fundraisers for his philanthropic foundation attended by the Mayor of London — including one as recently as last month — and donated to both Labour and Conservative politicians through Criterion.

The evictions are taking place at three buildings in Colliers Wood, Croydon and New Malden in the south of the capital, and were first reported by London Centric.

Oof! I heard it too. Nearly spat my tea!

Scathing about Starmer giving away Chagos, then "we're not dealing with Churchill here".
