A few months back according to the media it was Reform's for the taking - now it's a three-way bet between Labour, Greens and Reform

Also if we're suddenly so concerned about homophobia let's see a poll of what Reform voters think about it.

LadyLapsang · 27/02/2026 09:11

While I haven’t been following the by-election in detail, I think the other political parties would do well to analyse what Hannah Spencer said in her victory speech about working hard, aspiration and the White working class. On this issue she reminded me of Margaret Thatcher. Too often working class is used in political circles interchangeably with people claiming means tested benefits, but as the new MP understands, you can be working class, ambitious and self sufficient, without denigrating those that genuinely need some support.

Good grief, the lengths you’ll go to just to avoid saying ‘ok, that’s pretty worrying’

Homophobia is very worrying. The threat is coming from the global far right, not a by-election won by a party led by a gay man. HTH.

I dont believe all the ‘family voting’ stuff. Surely anyone wanting to influence another voter would encourage them to do a postal vote and do it that way? But we are expected to believe suddenly for this election there was a huge amount of public family voting that went unchallenged by officials??!!

So what bit don't you believe:

Do you think that Democracy Volunteers falsely made up stories of "family voting"?

That Democracy Volunteers were politically biased?

That Polling officials ignored instances of family voting they witnessed?

PandoraSocks · 27/02/2026 08:37

Even so the vast majority voted for left leaning parties.

Given the election was held against a background of the rise of a far right party with massive financial resources and seemingly unlimited access to the media, I still think that is heartening.

Not heartening for those voting for far right parties.

If anyone thinks anything will be done about family voting they are deluded, in the same way the rape gangs haven’t been addressed properly.

I’m surprised more aren’t worried about candidates being elected on issues that are outside the massive issues our country face. Voting patterns within communities need to be analysed and reported on honestly and openly. A poor white working class area will historically vote Labour, if course they are more tax and spend and do more for benefits recipients. Up/Mid class will vote more right. People will generally vote what’s best for them. We have an increasing population of people who will vote what’s best for them and their beliefs, this section of the community are typically the biggest receiver of benefits too. These beliefs do not fit in our society and in many cases are very dangerous to our democracy.

Our voting system needs to change to protect the country and to ensure that parliament represents the majority.

There is nothing wrong with the Greens appealing to the Muslim vote. What is questionable to many people is if the Green party used what is happening in Gaza to win Muslim votes on just that one issue when actually the liberal values of the Green party are against traditional Muslim values.

If they are focusing on that one issue - which isn't happening in the UK - to get votes, then that seems cynical and wrong. Not illegal - just morally wrong. Because it's not about "the governing of the nation where they live" is it? It's about what is happening a long way from where they live.

Well, the Tories tried to tie Labour to Paedophilia to win votes - are you ok with this? or is that also morally wrong.

Gaza, now, is about Right vs Wrong, not an armed struggle or Palestinian rights...

On other worldwide atrocities, all very bad but in most, we in the west do not arm these conflicts and condemn them roundly.

Not so over Gaza, even though it is looking increasingly like Genocide.

Margaret Thatcher? The reason we have no affordable housing? The reason we have the highest fuel costs in Europe? The reason there is shit in our rivers and on our beaches? Margaret Thatcher, whose utter destruction of our country is still affecting us today?

You wouldn’t be making any of these excuses had it been Reform voters, and you know it 🤷‍♀️

The fact Islamic countries are predominantly extremely hostile to LGBT people is also a good indicator. Some even have the death penalty.

Let me guess, I’m the bigot?

But we're not an Islamic nation, so why are you conflating the two?

Even though the Greens won, Farage will once again be the centre of media attention.

Polanski has been on a few radio stations this morning. He’s doing well.

It’s mn that does this about Farage. The Greens are getting their post winning airtime.

Alexandra2001 · 27/02/2026 09:21

Questionable like Reform appealing to white right-wing voters on the sole issue of kicking out illegal immigrants?

Also if we're suddenly so concerned about homophobia let's see a poll of what Reform voters think about it.

You can be sure that if the results were 50% of them thought homosexuality should be illegal, there would be very few people crowing "But 50% of them don't".

The Left needs its head examining when it comes to the Muslim vote.

One person and one person only in the voting booth. If a second person goes in, the ballot paper is confiscated and spoiled.

It's pretty worrying. It needs to get better.

Some of us have been campaigning for the rights of gay people for decades. What do you propose?

Just catching up on the Radio 4 Today programme where Nick Robinson is roasting Zac Polanski. Didn’t know about photos of Narendra Modi in the Green’s election leaflets. Plus I didn’t know that the Green’s intend to legalise cocaine.

Interesting!

Nope, the Guardian also. Endless Farage. I happen to think the Greens are at least as dangerous as Reform.

Perhaps you should go and campaign in Muslim areas for maximum efficacy?
