A few months back according to the media it was Reform's for the taking - now it's a three-way bet between Labour, Greens and Reform

You are being naïve if you don't acknowledge that Muslim women due to their religion are under more pressure & expectation to obey their husbands than the average white woman.

If Gaza wasn't a big factor then why did Green Party activists in Gorton and Denton ran an Urdu-language campaign targeting Muslim voters, criticising Labour and Reform over Gaza?

Why did the Green campaign leaflets feature candidate Hannah Spencer wearing a red and black keffiyeh while posing in front of a mosque?

Written in Urdu, the pamphlet calls for voters to: ‘Push the falling walls one more time. Labour must be punished for Gaza. Reform must be defeated and Green must be voted for. Vote for the Green party for a strong Muslim voice.’

Interesting.

For a long time I didn't either, but I'm starting to think the obvious answer is the correct one.

They have a hierarchy of importance and Muslims come before Jews. Because Jews are ‘whiter’ and white equals power and oppression. It’s that simple.

Fucking hell - the party of lunatic misogynists won?? 🤬

Err, no, they came second?

I don't think there's a "correct" answer. Just different views, really.

I suspect the numbers also have something to do with it.

Despite all the money spent, the endless airtime, the racism and fear mongering, Reform didn't come anywhere near to a win. 69% of G&D's turn-out voted for a left leaning party.

I find all that very heartening.

This can be said to a greater extent for Labour.

All that campaigning and SM and third.

Well appeasing Muslims will always result in far more votes than appeasing Jews.

CelebrateWhat · 27/02/2026 08:45

I dont believe all the ‘family voting’ stuff. Surely anyone wanting to influence another voter would encourage them to do a postal vote and do it that way? But we are expected to believe suddenly for this election there was a huge amount of public family voting that went unchallenged by officials??!!

I think Gaza was definitely a factor. Many people consider it a genocide, carried out by our ally, with our government's support, using weapons we supplied it with. I think things are more nuanced than that, but it's within a range of reasonable views. How big a factor that is is difficult to measure. Many people are more concerned about their bin collections, or their tax burden, than global affairs.

Of course big sections of Muslim society are patriarchal. So is ours; it's a question of degree. It's total BS to suggest that British muslim women are deprived of agency in this way.

Playingvideogames · 27/02/2026 08:45

I’m sure the Muslim population of G&D will be very on board with the Greens policies on LGBTQ.

Yet no complaints made when polls were open.... the officials in the polling stations haven't report this either.... duty bound to do so....

Sorry it's me again, back to correcting misinformation.

It was reported to polling officers whilst the polls were open.

John Ault, director of Democracy Volunteers, said the group had raised the matter at polling stations.
He told the Press Association: ‘It is a normal international standard not to issue a public comment until after a voting has finished, another accepted aspect of election observation is that you are encouraged to ask questions of staff…
‘We posed questions about family voting in several polling stations and how staff dealt with it when it arose.’

We're all heartened then! I'm delighted that Starmer has had the kicking he deserves - losing one of his top safe seats.

Same. I thought Hannah was a good choice for a candidate, their SM was active and pretty good.

If as the pp below state it was due to Urdu or Ali or other factors then they won’t replicate as much in other areas and it’ll play out either way.

I think let’s see. Greens want to take Labour’s place, so far they won this convincingly. If it’s all area dependent they won’t do as well elsewhere. Although they said it was low on their list for possibles.

The same reason no one liked to talk about grooming gangs. ‘Cultural cohesion’.

In other words, people too scared of upsetting populations who adhere to a particular religion.

Are you high? The main trend over the last decade has to win cheap votes by targeting and demonising muslims.

I agree.

I mean I’m not on board with them so this isn’t mud slinging as such. But the left’s determined view that the Muslim vote is one for diversity, minority rights and freedom is… extremely misplaced at best.

The Greens have been selected for their position on (allowing unchecked) immigration and supporting the ‘armed struggle’ of Palestine, nothing more.

What's wrong with the Greens appealing to the Muslim vote? They have as much right to have a say in the governing of the nation where they live as much as you or I do.

If Reform persists with this 'Muslim sectarianism' rhetoric that's emerged this morning, it's going to backfire on them hugely at the local elections and next GE. Most clear-minded voters will see it for what it is: a repugnant suggestion designed to stoke even more division.

I live in the area and the voting division has everything to do with politics and very little to do with the economy. Both areas are poor/below average income.

The difference is that Denton is occupied by people who are less educated and more likely to be racist or backwards-looking, i.e. typical Brexit/Reform voters.

The Gorton/Longsight side is a mix of educated young people and Labour voters who are fed up of the current government for a wide range of reasons.

As someone who lives in the local area, I'm glad the Greens have won. I would have felt dirty, embarrassed and sullied if we had voted in a Reform MP.

So, in your view:

"The difference is that Denton is occupied by people who are less educated and more likely to be racist or backwards-looking, i.e. typical Brexit/Reform voters."

Anyone who didn't vote Labour or Green is a bad person.

And:

"The Gorton/Longsight side is a mix of educated young people and Labour voters who are fed up of the current government for a wide range of reasons."

anyone who did is a good person?

You really can't seem to accept that reasonable people can hold different political views to yours?

To be frank, I believe that any government that included the Green Party would very quickly bring this country to its knees. But I accept that some people believe otherwise and that they are reasonable people (just with different beliefs).

In contrast though, you appear to not be able to give people with different political beliefs to yourself that same courtesy.
