Why were the hockey team given McDonalds at the White House?

Leaving aside all the other talk about the visit, why were they given McDonald's?

Presumably that's a deliberate choice for some sort of PR reason, but what?

If you were "honoured" with a lunch at Downing Street, wouldn't you at least expect a proer meal?

Or maybe Trump's so used to getting food that appeals to the, um, younger side of the population that he's forgotten what adults tend to prefer. They're lucky he didn't get them Happy Meals.

Chickadee001 · 28/02/2026 05:04

Man Baby eats so many of them when he's on the road as he's apparently scared of faling ill from eating anything else - so publicity money can't buy! as if it were needed 😆

Wanted to add to my post above, it also positions Trump as a ‘man of the people’ he’s feeding them what an average American might eat, it’s designed to make him seem accessible, on a par with the average voter, someone they can align themselves with.

Nope. It's lack of imagination and an over abundance of crassness on trumps part, his idea of a good time.

AppropriateAdult · 28/02/2026 07:32

Yeah, I don’t think there’s any deeper reason, PR or otherwise, than “Trump wanted it.” He’s not a strategist.

The President has to pay for all food served at the White House from his own pocket. I did wonder if McDs donated it because he promotes them so much. I’d be surprised if it was requested, I would assume athletes would have asked for something healthier.

According to Jeff Tiedrich's post, 'the President of the United States pays for food and beverages served to personal guests, including sports teams invited to the White House. While the staff is provided, the President is billed for food consumed by themselves and guests, a tradition dating back to 1800 to avoid mooching off taxpayers.'

mental health break, again

but also some stuff about burgers

Have you questioned why The Canadian team are pictured with food from and sponsored by Tim Hortons?

I’m not sure it’s the food- it’s that they were served it at the WHITE HOUSE

I think it demonstrates Trump’s complete and utter lack of class, @Topplace.

When a Head of State is honouring people with a meal, it should be special and high class - two terms that have never, and will never be used to describe the Toddler in Chief.

Indeed!!!!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/02/2026 21:18

Yes - it’s like turning up at Buckingham Palace and being served cold fish and chips, rather than something delicious whipped up in the palace kitchens.

Vodkamartini3olives · 28/02/2026 22:01

@Pinkissmart.- yeah but they're hockey bro's. Both my boys play Hockey and I know they'd much rather good around and eat McDonald's than sit down for a stuffy formal dinner.

There’s a huge gap between a Mac Donald’s and a ‘stuffy meal’. A decent burger, made with quality meat, or maybe a steak, just proper food. Not plastic garbage from a fast food joint.

IkeaJesusChrist · 01/03/2026 09:22

Because Trump eats shit food and he doesn't know any better.

DiscoBeat · 01/03/2026 09:34

Because the coach said they’d never win the Stanley Cup… but they could still get the Happy Meals. 😄

And Obama who gave the same food in 2010 ?

a spokesperson describing the meal as "hearty" and American.

  1. I can’t say I’ve seen that. Mark Carney certainly hasn’t been photographed handing them a double double, and doesn’t serve Timmy’s to guests.
  2. Tim Horton was a very famous Canadian ice hockey playery, prior to launching his coffee and donut empire. The company still spends a fortune on sponsoring grassroots/youth hockey across Canada. Any photos are likely part of that sponsorship, not the prime minister pushing Canadiana.

Hilarious given RFK Jr's stance (and by extension the administration's) on UPF's & seed oils.

I've had a look and I can't find any photos with Obama giving McDonald's to the men's US hockey team.

So prove it I guess?

Breaking news
Jack Eichel was on a podcast this week and asked if they had McDonald's at the White House this was his reply
"That got out there that it was McDonald's but it wasn't. We got burgers and they had a very nice spread for us. It was kind of cool, the top of the burger bun had a White House stamp on it. So it wasn't Mickey D's"
So fake news!.. No Hockey players were harmed in the making up of this story

MsDitsy · 03/03/2026 22:25

Topplace · 26/02/2026 14:24

Of course they drink it, they're sponsored by the company. I'm not saying hockey players shouldn't eat and drink McDonalds, I'm saying it's an interesting choice when honouring the team at the White House, when I'd have expected something more formal.

It's not a critisism anyway. It could be a genius PR move, that's what I'm interested in.

Ignore them, they obviously don't understand what you are curious about. I would have imagined a lovely sit down meal or at least a glorious buffet. Nothing wrong with a big mac but with what I imagine are the USA's best chefs, I would have thought they would be given something they can't just drive through and get every day. Perhaps there was a reason behind it, cooks night off maybe but can't think of one. Interesting that some posters just jumped to you having a dig at the states.

Vodkamartini3olives · 04/03/2026 00:09

@MsDitsy- did you read my post above.Jack Eichel said In his interview they were given a nice spread and the burgers were nice ones made at the White House. THEY DIDN'T HAVE MCDONALD'S!!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/03/2026 13:26

Absolutely, @MsDitsy - Trump can afford the best chefs, and should be providing classy hospitality to his guests. Sadly I don’t think he has an ounce of class anywhere in his burger-grease ridden orange body.
