Have you ever… washed your onions?

I was today years old when I caught a glimpse of the tag on a 3 pack of onions that said ‘wash before use’. This has never ever occurred to me in my entire lifetime and honestly, what on earth! You peel ‘em, you chop ‘em! Am I the only one? 😂

FiveShelties · 25/02/2026 08:20

No, I do not, nor have I any intention of starting, washing onions😁

Not2identifying · 25/02/2026 08:21

I wash other fruit and veg including some I peel like carrots but, no, I've never washed an onion.

Silverbirchleaf · 25/02/2026 08:21

Never washed an onion either.

NC6745 · 25/02/2026 08:22

hahahaha I’m glad I’m not the only one that’s missed this instruction. I too don’t plan on washing onions for the foreseeable 😂

I don't wash any fruit or veg.

berry223 · 25/02/2026 08:24

Funnily enough, I did in fact, wash my onions just the other day.
It felt so wrong and the outer layer got wet and icky and needed to dry out before peeling again. Only reason I washed them is because they rolled in juice from some rotten Brussel sprouts I'd forgot I'd bought in the bottom of the veg draw! 🤮

PashaMinaMio · 25/02/2026 08:25

Oh gosh, I peeled and rinsed one yesterday.

I’ll go and sit on the naughty step.

I don't wash any fruit or veg.

I only wash apples because they’re often sticky. But berries, grapes no. I don’t wash veg either because it gets cooked so bacteria gets destroyed at high heat. I’ll give them a rinse for a salad maybe

I wash them. I peel them in a basin of water. Because what is on the outside of the skin transfers to your hands, then from there to the inside part.

But I do live in a country with food safety issues. Who knows what is being used as fertiliser sort of thing. So everything is washed.

sittingonabeach · 25/02/2026 08:26

@PashaMinaMio why did you rinse it?

I have never washed an onion.

However I have started peeling, chopping and then soaking onions prior to starting to cook with them. I do the same with every veg these days. I no longer use non stick cookware and i find if they are all peeled the small amount of water keeps it from sticking and then I add more water to the pan after they have a thin layer of oil to help it all cook. Game changer.

Yep, I wash them. The skin comes off more easily. Then I rinse the peeled onion.

bloodredfeaturewall · 25/02/2026 08:35

yes, when I get them fresh from the ground and they are covered in dirt.
or if I'm going to use them raw.

OvernightBloats · 25/02/2026 08:39

Never, ever washed an onion. Could not be bothered.

However, I learnt the other day that it is a good idea to wait 10 minutes after cutting an onion before cooking it. A healthy compound called allicin is produced during those 10 minutes which has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and heart-healthy properties.

Alliolly · 25/02/2026 08:41

Yep - peel, wash and then chop 🤷🏻‍♀️

That’s interesting.

ginnitonic · 25/02/2026 08:42

"Washing your onions" sounds like a cheeky metaphor!

halftermhalfawake · 25/02/2026 08:44

Idk Mr Onion likes a wash, maybe those onions would like a wash as well?

Have you ever… washed your onions?
Ohthatsabitshit · 25/02/2026 08:45

Green onions, yes I do. Stored brown or red onions, nope.

macshoto · 25/02/2026 08:50

Never!

Heyhelga · 25/02/2026 08:52

Nope. You are peeling off the outer layers anyway so all's good.

Oblivionnnnn · 25/02/2026 08:58

That’d be like washing a banana. Why would you? I’m so confused. But then I don’t wash any veg at all.
