Can’t believe the price of chocolate

Ohchocichocolate · 24/02/2026 18:53

Slightly light hearted, but today, having not really bought chocolate for a good few months, I had the urge whilst buying petrol to get a chocolate bar and I really couldn’t get over the price of anything that is chocolate based.

I really really wanted Smarties. I couldn’t bring myself to pay what they cost. Suppose my waistline will thank me. A Cadbury cream egg was 99p.

Same here. I’m not paying £1 for a tube of smarties or a regular sized chocolate bar! I’m so much less tempted when I go to the shops or petrol station. £2 for 100g bar of Cadbury dairy milk is outrageous too!

notmuchtoit · 24/02/2026 19:14

Petrol stations always charge more than regular shops.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 24/02/2026 19:15

It’s being stolen to order now, was on the news.

I mostly buy chocolate from Poundland or B & M.It's still much more expensive than it used to be though.

Ohchocichocolate · 24/02/2026 19:23

According to Google chocolate is still cheaper than gold by the kilogram

I've seen easter eggs in Waitrose that are £12 for half an egg! How did we go from £6 for a whole egg last year to £12 for half an egg this year?

I'm just not gonna pay those prices. I'd rather go without

Ohchocichocolate · 24/02/2026 19:30

@plentyofsunshine currently researching alternative Easter gifts. I think everyone’s going to get a box of Borders biscuits.

That's cheap! My local newsagent is £1.09 for a regular size wispa/snickers/crunchie.

You can make chocolate Easter eggs. I’ve got moulds. We made them one year at youth club aged 8 or 9. Everyone was buying chocolate to make them with.

The cheaper Sainsbury’s chocolate is very nice in a bar and it was £2 something. You can then ration to a square.

310g box of Malteasers, normal price £6.90!!! Even Clubcard price was £4.50

That does seem excessive. Apparently it’s poor cocoa harvest or bad weather for it.

FamingolosForDays · 24/02/2026 20:04

YES the price of chocolate is extortionate. I love it so much but just can't justify it in the shopping. So I dont buy it 😕

roses2 · 24/02/2026 20:06

I buy less and save my money for Aldi Moser Roth or M&S biscuits as my treat now. Manufacturers have really upped the palm oil content and it tastes revolting. I used to be such a choco holic!

cadburygorilla · 24/02/2026 20:06

And they’re using palm oil to substitute milk to make the production costs cheaper…!

onelumporthree · 24/02/2026 20:20

I fancied a Mars bar a couple of days ago. Went to the shelf, looked at the price, thought "You're having a laugh" and left it there.

user1476613140 · 24/02/2026 20:25

I buy dark chocolate from Lidl. Much cheaper in comparison to the chocolate in major supermarkets.

FranticFrankie · 24/02/2026 20:25

It's shocking isn't it? As a confirmed chocoholic, I find it very painful, but I have to leave it on the shelf.
Creme eggs, even with a store points card 70p, but the price of mini-eggs; £2 for 74g!!

I can, and have, put away a whole packet of their dark chocolate gingers. I may have to pop out and buy some tomorrow. Their dark chocolate raspberry ones are yummy too.

RandomUsernameHere · 24/02/2026 20:45

Agree, DD and I picked up some Mini Eggs earlier and we couldn’t believe how expensive there were.

Just back from my local coop and although maybe coops are pricier I had to laugh at a can of coke £1.50 for one can!!!!!!

£1.25 for a 37g bag of maltesers..don't get me started on their crisp prices.

I usually get crisps/chocolate from b and as its cheaper.

RedRiverShore6 · 24/02/2026 21:06

B&M is cheaper and get a multipack.

I was just coming on to post this!

Heard it on the radio too. Crime gangs are stealing it to order so supermarkets are having to put it in locked plastic boxes like laundry detergent and alcohol.
Blush

Its now overtaken cheese and meat as the most stolen item.

I can only ever dream of being that kind of person. 🤣
