Can’t believe the price of chocolate

Slightly light hearted, but today, having not really bought chocolate for a good few months, I had the urge whilst buying petrol to get a chocolate bar and I really couldn’t get over the price of anything that is chocolate based.

I really really wanted Smarties. I couldn’t bring myself to pay what they cost. Suppose my waistline will thank me. A Cadbury cream egg was 99p.

@Ohchocichocolate been reading tonight about it not having milk and palm oil inside .
They also have the minimum amount of chocolate allowed before it cant be called a chocolate bar.

I’ve said it’s disgusting for years. .

Tonys chocolate or any other but Cadbury’s .
I think Cadbury has had its time .

Itsokaytomorrowisanewday · 24/02/2026 22:39

Divine chocolate is fair trade and most bars are over 70% cocoa and they have no palm oil in. I paid about £1.70 at the weekend for a small bar from Oxfam, but it tasted like chocolate from my childhood and, as it was so rich I couldn’t even finish it all. I don’t see the point of other chocolate. I’m glad there is a crack down on what is now allowed to be called chocolate.

That does seem excessive. Apparently it’s poor cocoa harvest or bad weather for it.

Problem is the prices don’t come down when there’s a better harvest. Luxury item now even for palm oil laden rubbish.

For the first time ever when getting fuel last week I didn’t buy a bar of chocolate.

I usually do pay at pump but there is a cheap garage on my way home from work so I go there when needed.

I couldn’t believe I’m that kind of person that puts £60 of fuel in the car but draws the line at paying £2 for a kitkat.

HopSpringsEternal · 24/02/2026 22:46

I am hoping it will stop me eating it every day. However a bit like booze the increase has failed thus far.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 24/02/2026 22:49

It’s not even nice either. Shit palm oil etc
think Ill stick to cake.

Ohchocichocolate · 24/02/2026 22:50

I went on Sainsbury’s online tonight and actually had a look at the price per kilogram of a variety of chocolate. It was a bit of a shock.

I’ve been trying to be good recently but the price difference between a regular bar of dairy milk and the little ones means they’re exploiting all of us who only want a small bar. And don’t get me started on the price of chocolate buttons!

As a kid I never liked chocolate . 20s. Could eat a small piece of say a mars bar .
Easier to eat now but no way enjoyable.
Glad I’ve always preferred crisps . 😊

Well I bought a crunchie yesterday and didn’t look at the price. It was yummy.

I fancied a Mars bar a couple of days ago. Went to the shelf, looked at the price, thought "You're having a laugh" and left it there.

My problem is that I remember when they cost 3p. Paying over a pound for a Mars bar seems ludicrous.

MsGreying · 24/02/2026 23:02

My DH tells me there was no cream eggs or other chocolate bars at Costco today.
There were only KitKats.

rememberingthem · 24/02/2026 23:14

I was looking at an artisan chocolate company and liked the sound of their Easter eggs, nearly choked when i saw they cost £45 per egg! I expected them to be more expensive but who the hell pays £45 for one Easter egg? Hotel chocolate are also selling £90 Easter eggs…..anyone who pays that needs their head examined.

alloutofcareunits · 24/02/2026 23:15

I don’t often buy chocolate but bought a bar of Tony’s Chocoloney in our local (overpriced) Sainsbury’s on Friday and it was £4.70! I thought maybe I was just out of touch but seems the price has rocketed!

parietal · 24/02/2026 23:20

it is caused by climate change messing up the chocolate harvest. and it is going to happen to more crops unless governments get serious about reducing CO2 in the atmosphere.

I can remember when they were 2 1/2p 😂

Ohchocichocolate · 25/02/2026 11:33

i remember when 10p bought you a a chocolate tool, and lots of chews (the names I can’t reminder but were cream and pink, I didn’t like blackjacks) that were 1/2p each. I found a 1/2p the other day in a drawer and temporarily wondered what country it came from 😀

My mum said she was shocked at the price of a Mars bar (her favourite) the other day at just under £1.

So we can blame Trump at least first for denying climate change?

BurnoutBee · 29/04/2026 08:23

I don’t bother now with branded chocolate. I’ve cut down anyway. I sometimes buy the big slab of Aldi milk chocolate but I wouldn’t say I was that keen on it. But it’s alright.

If I need a sugar fix these days it tends to be a couple of good old fashioned bourbons or custard creams.

GloiredeDijon · 29/04/2026 08:24

£4.20 for a bag of Minstrels in Waitrose last week. I put them back on the shelf!

It seems a strange world where the price of illegal “recreational” drugs is coming down (so I have read) whilst the price of perfectly legal chocolate goes up.
