Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

100% the footage the OP mentioned was shown on the news reports.

100% you say.

Great, so where's your proof?

FlowerFairyDaisy · 19/02/2026 11:19

Brewtiful · 19/02/2026 11:18

If that was true then there would be proof and people would be able to link to the reputable news reports.

It is true. I haven't looked for links but I remember it.

Remembering something doesn't make it true.

If it was true you would be able to find proof. Yet you, and many other posters have yet to share anything to back up your claims.

What's 'alternative news'?

There is simply no way that you had any access, alternative or otherwise, to information that was unavailable - because it wasn't known! - prior to late December 2019.

Have you links to this information and these 'alternative sources'?

If 'alternative' means conspiracy theories on the internet, well, sure, we all know they abounded during Covid - but they didn't have prior information, which was sharing public health guidelines like mask-wearing, in advance of any official source even knowing about it. Come on.

I decided to widen my news sources after the 2011 riots, got caught up in them and they were far worse than reported here. In my eyes alternative news is everything not - uk mainstream news covered by Ofcom. So from the New York Times to on the ground citizen reporting. It’s up to you to decide to go with the official line. Some of alternative news is obvious nonsense, some of it you aren’t sure about - this new disease spreading like crazy was a thing not being reported. I can only tell you what I decided to do, buy some medical masks ( soon to be almost impossible to buy) and wear them in crowds. I had no idea if I was right or wrong.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/02/2026 11:20

My office in london were floored by a virus in December 2019 ... I've never seen so many people off sick at the same time.

I eventually dragged myself to the GP in early Jan and she said she'd had so many people coming to see her with a 'mystery virus'.

I actually think it's odd that you and others don't remember it.

I don't remember it, because it didn't happen.

Right but you're just a person posting on the internet...why is you saying it's true and not proving proof supposed to be taken seriously?

Many posters have shared the proof from the bbcs first report in January and other credible evidence to support the correct timeline.

You can't just say a thing is true because you remember it, a persons memory is fallible.

DrVivago · 19/02/2026 11:22

Wow, this thread really does show how weird people are these days.

The sheer arrogance of believing that science and indisputable facts are no match for your own opinion and memory is incredible.

This happens every single year.

I have been on Mumsnet long enough to know that each year, someone comes on to ask who has the strange bug going around. It makes perfect sense that December 2019 was no different.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 11:23

Right on 10th Dec I wrote about the trip to China still going ahead as xxxxxxx (child's parents name) had received a letter and that the illness outbreak was in a place no where near when they were going.
Dec 18th we went to pil for dinner and I wrote about the scary news report , the zipping up and the bags and stretchers /vans. I say it's weird and scary footage. We were home by 8pm as we then watched a Christmas film before bed.

"It was major news weeks before that."

But everyone was carrying on as usual. I was at a family members funeral at the end of Feb and I know at that point it was seen by most people there as not being a serious issue. Two weeks later everything had changed.

This is just one video still on YouTube of mass graves, drones, and utter scaremongering

What i think is funny...and yes I find this funny...is that many people were diagnosed with Covid in my locality in Ireland...yet we did not have these mass graves & hysteria.

It was propaganda imo.

Brazil has a population 38 times larger than Ireland, a per-capita GDP less than one tenth of Ireland's, and a considerably poorer (in both senses) healthcare system. It hardly surprising that things were a little different.

Whinge · 19/02/2026 11:26

Is that supposed to be proof?

The OP claims the video was shared by the BBC before Christmas 2019.

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid

That didn't happen.

In a Lancet article it says the first observed patients (41 in total) was observed on the 8th December 2019, this was after it being diagnosed as a coronavirus, so it makes sense that there would have been cases long before then.

Yes, carrying on as normal here but it was building in the news way before March 2020 ...

BoundaryGirl3939 · 19/02/2026 11:28

God forgive me bit that video is hilarious.

Those people aren't dead. They're acting. Funny how a camera seems to be there right at the same time.

Control through fear.

Lifelifelife21 · 19/02/2026 11:28

This thread is infuriating. So many people talking absolute nonsense and convinced of their very inaccurate timeline of memories.

7238SM · 19/02/2026 11:29

I recall seeing body bags from ebola. In the Congo there was an outbreak around that time. 🤔

lifeisgoodrightnow · 19/02/2026 11:29

Well done. There were more than that shown. All these people who think people make this stuff up for fun simply because they didn’t see it should look at their own arrogance.

It also doesn’t mean that any of us don’t think Covid is an actual disease that needs care / I had a friend die of it and I’m fully vaccinated as I am against flu and pneumonia.

Saying 100% doesn't mean its true.
I didn't say there wasn't any footage showing people in the street, but I don't remember seeing anyone fitting.
If anyone fitted from COVID it would have been from a very very high temperature and I would doubt that person would have been feeling well enough to walk around a city.

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 11:30

I am so glad I am not going mad and its in my 2019 diary!

It did a lot of harm to people actually trying to put in proper controls to manage a novel virus outbreak.

People aren't claiming there weren't videos doing thd rounds though. They are saying that the illness wasn't been talked about and worried about in the UK in early December and videos weren't on bbc news mid December
