Do you remember this Covid news footage?

Chatting to SIL last night and we were remembering news footage we watched before the Christmas of Covid when the news was coming out of China about this virus. We clearly remember watching as a family news footage (would have been on BBC normal news not online) from China of people collapsing and fitting in the streets then being zipped up on stretchers and body bags and loaded into a black and yellow van by hazmat suited doctors/army. We all clearly remember this , it was not a film. What was this footage? Covid didn't present like that at all? We remember being really scared. SiL is a nurse and we remember her saying "what the hell is this thing"
Anyone else remember this footage?

My brain is the link Hmm DH and I talked about it when the shit started to hit the fan in Europe. 'Eee can you remember when we thought it would never affect us?!' conversations

The reports of door welding emerged in Feb 2020.

This happens every single year.

I have been on Mumsnet long enough to know that each year, someone comes on to ask who has the strange bug going around. It makes perfect sense that December 2019 was no different.

Not at that level! I understand winter bugs/viruses but this was different.

Well done. There were more than that shown. All these people who think people make this stuff up for fun simply because they didn’t see it should look at their own arrogance.

It also doesn’t mean that any of us don’t think Covid is an actual disease that needs care / I had a friend die of it and I’m fully vaccinated as I am against flu and pneumonia.

Thank you.

I agree with everything you have written.

The scare-mongering in the news (TV and social media) was really very strange at times, especially during the build up to March 2020.

I've just seen that, they make it clear that it's unverified and had been circulating on social media.
There are no people fitting as OP has said either.

God forgive me bit that video is hilarious.

Those people aren't dead. They're acting. Funny how a camera seems to be there right at the same time.

Control through fear.

Ok so there were staged videos as remembered, and the mass grave one which some have said no way to. The issue is the timing from the op and a few other posts.

I’m interested in the drinks one from @DeftWasp

Footage was shown on the news of a person convulsing on a hospital stretcher in China when the news of COVID first began. OP is correct.

Brazil has a population 38 times larger than Ireland, a per-capita GDP less than one tenth of Ireland's, and a considerably poorer (in both senses) healthcare system. It hardly surprising that things were a little different.

I am weary of this cognitive dissonance....grasping at straws to convince yourself. The truth is scarier than the false reality you have invested in. Always an explanation to twist the truth & comfort yourself.

The same mass graves hysteria was broadcast from other countries, including America.

I'm done debating. No point. Believe whatever you like.

The article linked to that video is from February 2020.

So the OP is not correct. There's still no evidence that the OP saw news reports on the BBC in December 2019.

I 100% am a fully paid up BBC supporter .
Not a conspiracy theorist. Reaso I said BBC is because that is the news my Pil always watched
Nothing om here from me is about a conspiracy, more just "here's a weird thing"

@Sitonyourdressmavis I believe you that in the sense that the diary entry exists in an entity (we don’t know exactly the wording or context and where you saw the video is not recorded and therefore there is still large potential for misremembering, even with a dated diary entry) - However, I find the extent to which a number of commenters are on board with the narrative of ‘lying’ and ‘footage disappearing’ quite worrying.

The amount of misinformation (often combined with elements of truth) that is out there right now with the intent of undermining our institutions is pervasive and to be taken very seriously. While I am not saying that you are specifically peddling that too, your post aligns with that category and those ready to run with it.

I recall seeing body bags from ebola. In the Congo there was an outbreak around that time. 🤔

I think news footage from winter 2019 of a different virus like ebola (which does look terrifying in footage) on the news is the most likely answer.

On top of people just getting generally confused by the timeline of events more than half a decade on.

Have no explanation of the OPs mysterious letter form the school about China which she conveniently can’t post on here. Why on earth would some random British school know before the world health organisation?!

Sitonyourdressmavis · 19/02/2026 11:35

The footage shown is very similar in tone. Especially the one man that falls directly over. In what I saw , someone did this , facing up, had a fit and was then put on a stretcher into a van , then other people dead and lifted onto trolleys and zipped into body bags

But the shit didn't hit the fan in Europe between xmas and new year 2019. First detected case in Italy was Chnese tourists on 31 January 2020, first clusters of local spread detected 21 February, first death 22 February. The quarantines started in February. So even then you were remembering things at a distance of 2 months and are unlikely to have been certain of dates and details.

Edited

The news item was in between Xmas and New Year, the conversation about the news item happened when the shit hit the fan and we realised it wasn't confined to a small area of China as we thought when we'd watched that news in late December.

southerngirl10 · 19/02/2026 11:36

I remember the video. Bodies everywhere. Then, Bill 'I make more money out of vaccines than computers' Gates swooping in to save us all.

inamarina · 19/02/2026 11:37

I don’t remember the footage you mention OP, but I remember a news story about a new respiratory virus in China pop up on my phone as we were on our way to visit family for Christmas. Not sure which channel it was though.

A hospital stretcher, in a hospital?

Positivepositron · 19/02/2026 11:38

Does anyone else remember the website tracking the cases? I can't remember what it was called would be interesting to know when it started.

However many times you try to suggest I'm weird or lying it's not true. The school were forced to respond to parents asking if the trip was going ahead , those parents must have seen something/heard about something.
It's not that I conveniently can't post it . I wrote it in my diary and have asked friend if she still has it electronically. The trip went ahead before Christmas

Then share the letter!

You are talking absolute nonsense. Sorry!

People aren't claiming there weren't videos doing thd rounds though. They are saying that the illness wasn't been talked about and worried about in the UK in early December and videos weren't on bbc news mid December

Yes they are and now as the videos have been shown they’re trying to discredit the OP in any other way they can. Classic logical fallacy argument when losing a debate.

Positivepositron · 19/02/2026 11:42

The Doctor who spotted the cases didn't try and tell his fellow doctors until the end of December

Mass graves and mortuary capacity were high on the march/April 2020 agenda. I was in the meetings for our county. It was worse case scenario planning rather ran hysteria and we didn’t discuss it with the media.

User122333 · 19/02/2026 11:45

I remember a very heavy cold or flu-type virus going round the primary school around the end of November beginning of December, and kids off for a full week or more.

Then in 2020 people trying to work out whether that could have been a form of covid but too soon for it to have been recognised as covid.

No, the actual debate is whether people were referencing this on mainstream media prior to Christmas 2019.
