If babies eyes are still blue at 18 months, are they likely to stay blue?

I have brown eyes and Dh has blue and our other 2 children have brown eyes, one had very brown eyes from birth and one changed early on from blue to hazel to brown.
Youngest is 18 months and still has his bright blue eyes like his Dad is he likely to keep them now or are they still likely to change?

It happens earlier than 18 months, first 6 months I think. So it would mean you have a recessive blue eye gene as well as your brown eye dominant gene, and your newest baby got the blue recessive gene from you 💕

NamingNoNames · 18/02/2026 12:56

They would have changed colour by now.

CloakedInGucci · 18/02/2026 12:58

Eyes can get darker up until about age 3.

Mine had bright blue eyes until about 3/4, now they are starting to fade a bit to the common UK default of blue/grey!

Cutecattoes · 18/02/2026 13:03

I missed the eye part and was wondering if you had birthed a smurf 😅

mindutopia · 18/02/2026 13:04

Yes, usually by 6-12 months.

Dh and I both have brown eyes. We have one dc with brown eyes (turned by 6 months) and one with blue eyes, who is a bit of a genetic outlier. 🤷🏻‍♀️

junenotoffred · 18/02/2026 14:06

Dd had very blue eyes at 18 months, they were turning Bluey/green by 2, then have gradually turned a greeny/hazel. Probably settled to this around 4. She’s now 11 so aiming no further changes. I definitely assumed she would have blue eyes as they were so blue for so long!

Exactly the same for my DD. She had very bright blue eyes at 18 months, now ay 11 they are mostly green with a bit of blue. Changed to more green than blue around 4/5...

Very sad that this thread has made me lose hope that my green eyed children will eventually have my brown eyes 😂

LadyCrustybread · 18/02/2026 15:29

Mine were blue/grey until I was 23. Then they turned green 😂

stackhead · 18/02/2026 15:29

Likewise to PP, DD had blue eyes until 3ish and then they started to go greeny. I'd say she had green eyes now.

MabelAnderson · 18/02/2026 15:37

DDs eyes started to turn green at 12 months and were bright green by about 2. Friend’s son also had blue eyes for his first two years (his brother has blue eyes that stayed blue), then they gradually turned green.

Both you and your DH have a blue and a brown gene then if I recall correctly

DH and I both have brown eyes, as did both DH's parents and one of mine (DF). Our DS has blue eyes like my mum. She actually had the gall to complain that all of her grandchildren have blue eyes and none brown.

I was really expecting him to have brown eyes, it was quite a disappointment that he didn't! (Not that I've told him that obviously)

Manthide · 18/02/2026 17:41

My eyes went from blue to green whereas my late db had the most gorgeous bright blue eyes until he was about 4. They then faded to an icy blue grey. My 4dc all have brown eyes after their df.

Widowwith2 · 18/02/2026 17:42

Hubby brown eyes me blue our daughter had blue eyes from birth they then changed to green around 2 years old son brown eyes his change to Hazel in the summer and dark brown in the winter its amazing to see them change

tripleginandtonic · 18/02/2026 17:43

Yes

Bunnycat101 · 18/02/2026 17:47

I have brown ish sometimes greenish eyes and have one child with piercing blue eyes and the other very dark brown.

ChilliBrandy · 18/02/2026 17:53

My husband (dark brown eyes and hair) and I (blue eyes, blond hair) have 3 children. 2 have blue eyes and blond hair and 1 has hazel eyes and brown hair.

thebeautifulsky · 18/02/2026 17:56

DGD up until 20 months had varying shades of blue eyes just like her Dad. They turned hazel for a while and now at just coming up to 3 has brown just like her Mum.

Dinodoodle9545 · 18/02/2026 18:02

2 year old still has her dad’s blue eyes, mine are a greeny hazel. Baby no 2 is six months and still blue but she has much darker hair (like me) so I’m kinda hoping hers change a bit more green like mine

ReturnOfTheToad · 18/02/2026 18:02

Bith of kids eyes were blue at 18 months and stayed that way. Dh and I both have green eyes so I was expecting that they would change but they have very bright blue.

As a side note Dds biology teacher convinced her that she must be adopted or that her dad mustn't be her dad because she said it was impossible for 2 green eyed parents to have a blue eyed child 🙄

changedusernameforthis1 · 18/02/2026 18:02

I don't know what the chances are, but my blue eyed baby ended up with my hazel eyes when he turned 5!
We were all surprised as everyone told me his would stay blue once he turned 2.

I missed that part too 😆 🤣 😂

Mine and my DDs eyes continued changing until about age 7 - from blue to green

They won’t go blue to brown at 18m though
