How often do you wash your curtains ...

and other soft furnishings if you have dogs? We have three dogs and no carpet or soft furnishings e.g. rugs or cushions. Also, no fabric settees. But we have curtains in most rooms. We air the whole house every day for an hour or two (yes, it does get freezing this time of year!) because we try to avoid having dog smell.

Anyone who visits says they can't smell our dogs (even very 'honest' friends) which I can believe because we are constantly cleaning and airing. But we only wash our curtains every 8 - 10 weeks. The dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms.

If you have dogs, how often do you wash your curtains?

Blimey, I probably wash mine every couple of years or so - and only in the summer when they can go out on the line. I've got one dog.

Domino211 · 17/02/2026 17:01

Erm I can’t remember the last time I washed them……. Must be at least a couple of years. I do wash other soft furnishings frequently though as my dog is a bit of a stinker

Washing curtains you say? Not sure I ever have!

I've got a dog.
I have 2 fabric sofas and lvt flooring.
I've never washed my curtains and, I think they've probably been up for 4 years.
I do wash his beds around every 6 weeks when he gets groomed

Dearg · 17/02/2026 17:09

My curtains are not washable.

I am about to redecorate so they will probably get a dry cleaning, but generally, if they are really lucky, I hang them outdoors on a dry windy day, at most once a year.

I have a lab, but she’s not generally wrapped up in the curtains.

ForRosePoster · 17/02/2026 17:10

Twice a year..

Though could be less till I figure out the last time I washed them.

Brightbluesomething · 17/02/2026 18:14

Don’t have a dog but I only have one pair of curtains in the house. Blinds everywhere else which get an occasional dust. I’ve never washed them since moving into my current house over 3 years ago. They look clean and Ive just given them a sniff. They’ll be fine for a while longer. Didn’t even occur to me to wash them until I read your post. My house is perfectly clean but regular washing seems unnecessary.
What are your dogs doing to your curtains?

CrustyBread1977 · 17/02/2026 18:17

I’ve never washed a curtain in my life.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 17/02/2026 18:20

Depends what your dogs are doing to the curtains, I suppose 🤔

AfternoonTeaAddict · 17/02/2026 18:21

What fabric are they? We have heavy lined damask and silk curtains. They get professionally cleaned about every 10 years or so.

We also have a rental property with heavy silk and damask curtains. They bet professionally cleaned between tenancies which is roughly every 5 years or so.

Never

saltandvinegarpringles · 17/02/2026 18:23

We’re supposed to wash our curtains? 🫣

TalulahJP · 17/02/2026 18:28

are your dogs in the room when friends can smell them?
so it could just be the dogs that smell.

or are they outside and friends can still smell them, ie it’s the house that smells of dog.

KnickerlessParsons · 17/02/2026 18:29

I don’t think we’ve ever washed our curtains. In didn’t know you could ☺️

gototogo · 17/02/2026 18:30

I’ve never washed curtains Blush

ThePoshUns · 17/02/2026 18:30

You’re supposed to wash curtains? Crikey.

Denim4ever · 17/02/2026 18:31

Dry clean only

Disturbia81 · 17/02/2026 18:47

Never. I washed a few when younger and they shrank, one side shorter than the other. Happened a few times! Since then I spray them with fabric softener

ImPamDoove · 17/02/2026 18:50

We only have one pair of curtain in the entire house. They are white, not openable and puddle onto a wooden floor - and we have dogs.

I generally wash them once a year when I notice how filthy they are.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 17/02/2026 18:50

Life’s too short for that !

66babe · 17/02/2026 18:52

I change curtains in April and then again Sept back to the winter ones
They get washed then so each set once a year - that’s all
No dog

Wexone · 17/02/2026 19:04

washed curtains last year first time in 10 years. actually paid for someone to come out and clean them. cream curtains that can't go into washing machine and it was a faff to take down and put back up. have dogs and cats and room also has a stove in it lit 6 months of the year so cleaning more to get rid of smoke etc rather than dog

JustGiveMeReason · 17/02/2026 19:09

I mean, I don't have a dog, but I have never washed any curtains in my life.

frothycoffee2 · 17/02/2026 19:12

I have been in my current home 5 years and actually washed a curtain this week. Only because I noticed it had mould stains on it from our very old windows constantly getting condensated in the cold weather. It doesn’t occur me to wash them unless they are visibly dirty. I must be grimy.
