How often do you wash your curtains ...

and other soft furnishings if you have dogs? We have three dogs and no carpet or soft furnishings e.g. rugs or cushions. Also, no fabric settees. But we have curtains in most rooms. We air the whole house every day for an hour or two (yes, it does get freezing this time of year!) because we try to avoid having dog smell.

Anyone who visits says they can't smell our dogs (even very 'honest' friends) which I can believe because we are constantly cleaning and airing. But we only wash our curtains every 8 - 10 weeks. The dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms.

If you have dogs, how often do you wash your curtains?

Never.

Macadamian · 17/02/2026 19:44

Are the dogs actually rubbing up against the curtains regularly? If so I suppose I might wash them once a year.
If it's more that you are thinking they might pick up doggy smell just from the air, I wouldn't wash them, I'd just lay them flat over a washing line on a sunny day and rotate every half hour so all sides get the sun. The UV will take away any smell.

Couple of dogs, wash bedding and cushions occasionally. Never been near the curtains...

Jellycatspyjamas · 17/02/2026 19:48

I wash the dogs bedding and throws on the sofa but never the curtains - he’s not anywhere near the curtains.

MyNextDoorNeighbourVotesReform · 17/02/2026 19:52

When the curtains look like they need a wash. Every 6 months? Around that

Edit - no dogs here (or cats)

Bellaunion · 17/02/2026 19:58

I consider myself a somewhat cleaning obsessive and even I've never washed a curtain in my life. Wouldn't they come out crumpled in the machine? What do you use as a replacement while they dry??

StormyLandCloud · 17/02/2026 20:01

Just washed my bedroom curtains which are on French doors and another set on a window - silvery grey plush velvet style, can’t believe how lovely they were lol … 5 years since put up! our doggo is a snow dog sleeps by the cold doors in our bedroom
our lounge curtains - every two years ish

I iron mine and they dry quickly. But going without curtains for a couple of days isn't a great hardship

Some curtains do need dry cleaning so they will be away for a while, perhaps!

Spaghettion · 17/02/2026 20:03

Another grim one with my reply op.. I have never washed my curtains.

Hedjwitch · 17/02/2026 20:06

I washed our bedroom ones during Covid because I had bugger all else to do! Have never washed the sitting room ones.

Thecows · 17/02/2026 20:07

Every 8-10 weeks?!? I'm sorry but that's just completely nuts. Just why??

itsthetea · 17/02/2026 20:17

When the room gets painted

SirChenjins · 17/02/2026 20:20

Never! They look and smell ok, so 🤷‍♀️

Regresstigress · 17/02/2026 20:36

Never washed a pair of curtains in my life.

Lorrymum · 17/02/2026 20:39

Never!

LighterDaysAreComing · 17/02/2026 20:47

Maybe once every few years. If you have no carpet or rugs what do your dogs lie on, play on etc? Obviously they will have beds but sounds uncomfortable, and older dogs need non slippy floors

BatchCookBabe · 17/02/2026 20:49

Twice a year ... Around April, then September. They dry a bit quicker then. You can just hang them back up on the curtain pole, and they dry quite quickly.

It's bonkers to NEVER wash them. It's not about competitive cleanliness, who on earth never washes their curtains?! Confused

You ARE supposed to wash them!! This is the same people who never clean their oven, or their windows, and never clean behind the fridge. 😖

Why are some people on here so proud of being grubby, unhygenic, and slovenly?

First Google search brings up this...

Neglecting to wash curtains

causes a buildup of dust, allergens, pet dander, and odours, which degrades indoor air quality and can trigger allergies or asthma. Over time, trapped moisture leads to mould/mildew growth, while fabric becomes discoloured, dusty, and eventually deteriorates. Regular cleaning is necessary to maintain a healthy home.

Sort yourselves out! 😬

Life is NOT too short to do it. It takes no time at all hardly. Just stick them in the washing machine on a light mild wash. And the washing machine does all the work. All you've got to do is take them down, and hang them up. 15 minutes work tops - twice a year!!! And don't tell me they can't go in the washing machine. Nearly ALL curtains can! If you have velvet or silk curtains - which you don't unless you're the Queen - then get them dry cleaned!

Well I've never heard of anyone washing curtains and I've never cared to Google to ask what jobs I should be doing. So I'm happy to remain a non-washer of them.

We're getting the lounge repainted this year. I might wash them when they come down then but I make no promises.

8-10 weeks is utterly insane.

Bananafofana · 17/02/2026 20:59

im 50 and have never washed a curtain. We have 12 foot ceilings, full length curtains and the idea that I could even get a fraction of one curtain in our washing machine is laughable. I am now eyeing them suspiciously however …

USSAthena · 17/02/2026 21:01

We have cats who like to window watch and thus touch the curtains. The curtains aren’t machine washable so I take a clothes brush to them every week to get the cat hair off them. I spot clean if necessary and I air them frequently. That’s the best I can do.

Nugg · 17/02/2026 21:03

Never. HTH.

TheStudioWasFilled · 17/02/2026 21:26

TalulahJP · 17/02/2026 18:28

are your dogs in the room when friends can smell them?
so it could just be the dogs that smell.

or are they outside and friends can still smell them, ie it’s the house that smells of dog.

Neither, really. But we want to eliminate the risk of dog smell getting into the fabric. A bit like cigarette smoke (we don't smoke).

I’m terrible I only wash all the curtains in the house once a week
