Are you jealous of people who go on lots of holidays?

I know a number of people who go on multiple holidays a year, often to exotic, "bucket list" places. Mostly I find out via their Facebook posts. I don't do too badly myself (generally 1 main holiday abroad plus at least 3 short breaks per year) but I often feel quite envious and wonder if I should be doing more before I get too old (am in my 50s). However, although I mostly enjoy my holidays, I'm always glad to get home to my own space and think I would actually find it quite stressful to go away so often. I'm aware I'm lucky and know there are people who never get away, either due to financial, health or other constraints or simply because they don't want to. I'm also aware you can have an enjoyable life without going away from home - seeing friends, hobbies, days out or even at home baking, watching netflix etc.

I realise that pre-social media I probably wouldn't even be aware of most people's holidays unless I saw them and they told me about them, so that's obviously a factor too.

Anyone else feel like this?

No . Holidays are something to look forward to and a treat . One decent holiday a year with maybe a cheeky 4-5 day last minute break is absolutely fine for me.

DizziLizzy · 15/02/2026 17:24

Im now that person. Couldn't afford any holidays when young. After having DC had one european holiday a year February half term. Then slowly added Centre Parcs type weekends away plus a couple of camping trips but al done on cheap as chips. Saved hard one year for a carribean holiday again in February. Since the DC are now adults and my DHs new business ventures exploding we've been able to go abroad 4 times a year for the past couple of years
DH has been away 3 times since December. It's just where we dins ourselves. Love the sun and thats what we choose to spend our fun money on. We have a nice home and nice car but nothing overly special. I don't spend much on myself, I can't tell you when I bought new clothes. I don't get my nails done. Hair maybe 4 times a year. Don't tend to replace things at home until they are well and truly knackered etc.

No
I hate the faff of travelling
Fuss over cabin baggage
Having to pay to put a suitcase on
I travelled in my early 20s ( early 00s ) when flights were cheap and there wasn't the same hassle around travel

Decisionsdecisions1 · 15/02/2026 17:31

No - even though we are lucky enough to go on multiple holidays I don’t think it’s the thing we look forward to most or enjoy most.

I am however deeply and unreasonably jealous of people who have grandparents on hand to take their kids for school hols, weekends, overnights etc.
There are different sorts of fortune, Not all to do with disposable income.

justtheotheronemrswembley · 15/02/2026 17:42

Several lots of our friends and family go away often, either to somewhere in Europe, to visit family all over the UK or overseas, or on cruises in the Caribbean etc.

One thing I have noticed is that none of them have any pets.

Happyholidays78 · 15/02/2026 17:46

No. I love looking at people's holiday pictures & as others have said I get inspired by them. We go away a lot & I feel very fortunate to be able to do so, I never share on social media though, also we prioritise holidays over most things e.g I rarely buy clothes, shoes, makeup etc & we live in a very small house.

OneOfEachPlease · 15/02/2026 17:49

I think I am a bit like you, OP. I do get a little twinge, especially now it seems that most of my friends are taking their families away every half term and in the summer! But equally I do like being at home, I don’t like to go abroad every year, and I’m not willing to spend that much money. 😂

So in the way the choice is mine when it comes to holidays with the kids.

I would like to get away a bit more with my partner but they have a different approach to using annual leave and are in a bit of a different financial situation. So that does mean that I occasionally do feel a little twinge when someone’s off on yet another travel show worthy holiday!

chubbaa · 15/02/2026 17:55

Not really. We go abroad once every 1-2 years but went a fair amount pre kids. I feel fortunate that we can still afford to. Definitely don’t get jealous of seeing Dubai holidays.

igelkott2026 · 15/02/2026 17:55

I am and I'm not. I don't really like going to places where I can't speak the local language, so stick to places where I can, unless it's somewhere like Copenhagen where everyone speaks English better than I do

Travel is quite anxiety-inducing these days as well.

And at the moment I have an accident-prone mother in her 80s, so don't really feel like I can go overseas in case she has another accident (she's not wobbly on her feet but things just seem to happen to her eg sitting on a chair and it collapsed under her (and she's 8 stone so not heavy)). I suspect the travel insurers would probably say "well you knew she was old" and refuse to pay out.

Also it's not very eco-friendly to travel a lot is it?

And finally, it's always me who has to book things, so this year I am not doing it. I will probably crack at some point but last year I got to June before I did. Booking holidays isn't wife work.

No me neither. But I did see someone was in New Zealand the other day and that was envy-inducing. I'd love to go but I know it will never happen.

That family have a pet dog as well so I don't know where she is.

The envy is very dependent on destination for me. I am not remotely envious of Thailand, Dubai, Dominican Republic etc. If someone is in Prague or Berlin or Canada, I do feel a twinge.

There is a bit of social pressure when it seems like everyone in the workplace is always jetting off. When you book a week’s leave people ask expectantly if you’re going anywhere. It does come across as a bit of a status thing with some people.

Yep, this.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/02/2026 18:01

Maybe slightly sometimes, but then I remember how stressful I find the planning, booking, packing, airport, etc. etc. I'm glad to be home most of the time.

Leo800 · 15/02/2026 18:03

Holidays are what we spend most of our spare money on because we love them & the memories are fantastic.

Some of our friends have seemed jealous but they spend loads on cars, clothes etc. when I couldn’t care less what car I drive or what label I wear. Everyone has different priorities.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 15/02/2026 18:04

I’m mid 50’s and go on seven foreign holidays a year. I love my life the rest of the year too so never feel sad to come back home.

We got married in New Zealand. It’s an amazing country. Don’t think we could afford to now though! Keep meaning to go back one day

Do you work and have a lot of annual leave? I'd struggle to find the time to go away as often as that.

Tiggermad · 15/02/2026 18:34

I used to to be honest.
That was when we were struggling financially. I’d see people going on exotic holidays and think how do they afford all those holidays ? But who knows people go into debt for nice holidays.
But past few years we are much better off financially so do go on slot of holidays but even then I’d like more !

Harrietsaunt · 15/02/2026 18:35

I spend what most people would consider a disproportionately high amount of my income on holidays. So no, I am never jealous of other people’s holidays. Maybe envious sometimes?

Most people don’t have as many holidays as I do though.

doobaz · 15/02/2026 18:36

zbhg7853 · 15/02/2026 16:23

That’s such an odd inference to make. Why would you assume there has to be something negative behind it? Surely you understand people are just different, problems at home don’t go away on holiday.

My assumption would just be wanderlust, some people love seeking out new experiences and adventures, they also take joy in introducing their children to the world.

They pretty much go to the same place every time. The kids always complain about going, they just want to be at home and hang out with their friends like everyone else.
Maybe don't comment when you don't know the situation

cramptramp · 15/02/2026 18:40

I’m not really jealous about where they go but I’m envious that they can afford it! I have no desire to go anywhere long haul. Quite happy with beach holidays around the med and European city breaks.

Nomedshere · 15/02/2026 18:40

Dh and I go away about every 6 weeks. Never long haul, just Europe or UK. I love planning breaks and itineries.
We don't have beach holidays .

Tontostitis · 15/02/2026 18:45

God people go on holiday to 'get away' I love my life, my home, my husband, my dogs, the gorgeous seaside town I live in. I live a varied active full life rich in new experiences and rewarding hobbies, children and grandchildren. I don't need to get away. If I needed to get away multiple times a year I'd change my life. The odd holiday is nice weekends away to do or see something different are ok but if you need multiple big holidays then I think how sad you must be and how unenjoyable your life is.

HairyToity · 15/02/2026 18:47

We've been cash strapped for a while now. I get my travel fix from travel books and travel shows, and have accepted one UK holiday a year. I do get jealous when people have cash to do their house up though. This I'd love.

zbhg7853 · 15/02/2026 18:50

@TontostitisI don’t go on holiday to “get away”
I do it because I’m excited by all there is in the world to experience, home is wonderful, but there is so much I want to see and do before I die. It’s an adventure, not an escape.

zbhg7853 · 15/02/2026 18:51

@doobazwhat every family you know going away multiple times a year is in that situation and you know it intimately, sure 🙄
