Best sofa bed for daily sleeping

I've decided to switch round the bedrooms in my home so my 3 children get a bedroom each - this means my husband and I will be sleeping in the living room til my 16 year old moves out!

Who knows how long that will be for but at least another 2.5 years, so we want to get a sofa bed that is comfortable to sleep on.

Does anyone else sleep daily on a sofa bed or have a recommendation for a really comfy one?

Budget?

marcyhermit · 14/02/2026 15:17

Money isn't unlimited but comfort is more of a consideration than budget.

An ikea one I have is very comfy, not sure of the style.

You won’t find that many sofabeds designed for daily sleeping however having said that I had ikea futons in my teens that I slept on daily and they were comfy.

This doesn’t seem to be the one I have but is similar:-

I had an Ikea Karlstad sofa bed and it was brilliant for sleeping on but they’ve discontinued it. You can get them second hand though.

HelloDaisy · 14/02/2026 18:38

Don’t get a DFS one! Ours is really uncomfortable and not good for even occasional nights..

Not many suggestions for good sofa beds yet 😂

Would a Murphy bed fit in the space? I think they are more likely to be better as a long term solution than a sofa bed.

IAmKerplunk · 14/02/2026 19:44

Not a sofa bed suggestion (sorry!) but I did the same as you. Depending on how big your lounge is - I put my double bed at one end of living room then had like a free standing screen thingy and then at the other end was the sofa and tv etc. Didn’t need much floor space in the lounge end as my dc were beyond the age of having big toys so only played Lego (room enough for that) in the lounge. Sure you have already thought about it but if not it’s a suggestion. I knew myself that I wouldn’t put the sofa bed back everyday 🙈 so didn’t go for that option.

I have a single chair bed from Dusk. I put a mattress topper on it and I use it daily.

Boeufsurletoit · 14/02/2026 19:46

I have an ikea gronlid. Unfortunately discontinued but comfy for long term use - we use it with a panda mattress topper but it's also great without. I bet other ikea sofabeds will be similar.
Don't be tempted by the ones where you sleep on the sitting surface - they're awful ime. The ikea one is a pull-out frame with a proper mattress. More hassle but much better!

I’ve got a Madrid sofabed from Sofa Sofa. I’ve slept on it every night for the past 18 months and it’s lovely. More comfortable than my old bed!

That's good to know, they are very reasonably priced too!

Possibly but then it would be difficult to use the room as a living room too I think.

I spent weeks testing dozens of sofa beds - I am currently lying on a sofa from Darlings of Chelsea. Works as a bed for 50% of the year and is a really comfy sofa.

Was expensive, but definitely the most comfortable I tried, and purchased on interest free credit.

PacmanIsLost · 14/02/2026 20:43

I second the ikea karlstad sofa bed. I’ve had ours for almost 13 years and it’s so nice to sleep on and easy to set up and put away. I have a memory foam topper for extra cosy!
I know it’s discontinued but often you can find them on eBay or marketplace.

SlenderRations · 14/02/2026 20:52

I would be inclined to sacrifice the style of the sofa in favour of bed comfort. So one which has a 3 foot mattress on top and a pull out and pop out 3 foot underneath, if you see what you mean. The metal action pull out ones I just don’t think can ever be very successful if you either of you weigh more than 8 stone plus they tend to end up as a very narrow bed. This is our one, that turns into a 6ft wide bed. It doesn’t look like a conventional sofa but is comfy to sit on if you like to lunge or tuck your feet up (it doesn’t need to be that high - I store two toppers under the matresss

Divide your living room if you can with a screen and use a proper comfy bed?
