Miss the cinema but it feels too extravagant to go now

Anyone else? I used to go to the cinema a lot. But having to watch the budget and it's just so much. Such a shame really.

Check where your nearest VUE cinema is, from £5.99 a ticket and has Meerkat offers

Wexone · 14/02/2026 18:50

it's about 14e each for us to go to the cinema. which is not bad but add everything else and then your at 50e. I do like the cinema though and we try to go to it every couple of months. what ruins it though is as follows
constant talking whispering etc
constant muching eating rattling of wrapper
up and down to the loo
checking phones or constantly on them and same applies to smart watches
yes people complain to staff but nothing is done
it's not the cost that puts us off it's people

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 14/02/2026 18:53

I agree it is ridiculously expensive now. Thankfully I can get discounted tickets through the NHS so I can go off peak and get a decent priced ticket

Find an independent cinema. Our local one has a discount card. £15 a year and that includes one free ticket. Then tickets are £6.50 for adults and £4.50 for children with the discount (otherwise £2-3 more each). Mondays are 2 for 1. They do children’s showings that are £8 for ticket, small popcorn and a drink. It’s fantastic. Never too busy and everyone who works there is lovely. I do buy snacks and drinks but easy to bring your own.

CoralOP · 14/02/2026 19:02

You get 2 cinema tickets a month with sky TV and 6 cinema tickets a year with lloyds. That's my cinema trips covered, I wouldn't pay full price, I didn't think people paid full price to be honest!

Rainbowpumpkin · 14/02/2026 19:15

Lots of deals on tickets. I always used to buy insurance through Compare the Market to get discounts. Sky give two free Vue tickets every month. Amazon prime do a 2 for £10 deal to. And then you get snacks at Tesco on the way!

stressedinsurrey · 14/02/2026 19:16

Often local theatres do the latest films and they are often much cheaper than cinemas as they tend to be subsidised and I always take my own snacks and drinks.

mum2jakie · 14/02/2026 22:14

Less than £6 per ticket in my local Odeon.

MetallicMushroom · 14/02/2026 22:19

I go to a local independent cinema. Tickets are £5 and they have well priced food/drink deals.

I never used to go to the cinema and now go at least once a month - even cheaper as I have a membership.

I like it because I put my phone away and actually switch off for a couple of hours.

MadisonAvenue · 14/02/2026 22:19

We each pay £19.99 a month for an Odeon Limitless pass and go weekly, sometimes twice a week if there are a couple of films we want to see.

Merseymum1980 · 14/02/2026 22:25

Not sure where you live but we have an indepent cinema, its much cheaper, most of the staff have disabilities. Its a great atmosphere. The snacks are cheaper too

latetothefisting · 14/02/2026 22:29

Honestly I don't think the cinema is that expensive. I used to work in one twenty years ago and ticket prices were about £6 for adults which is the same price as my local odeon! I know others are more but compared with the general cost of living increase even £15 is about right.

Besides which there are lots of ways to reduce it - some offer cheap days (e.g saver mondays), amazon do two tickets for £10 with prime membership, lloyds Bank give you 6 free tickets with a standard bank account, there are often tickets on Groupon, meerkat 2 for 1, etc.

ForAmusedHazelQuoter · 14/02/2026 22:42

I go twice a week, my local cinema is my happy place.

YourTruthorMine · 14/02/2026 23:17

DD got a deal with her student bank account. £7 each for VIP seats at the local Vue, we stopped in Aldi on the way for snacks, one bag of sweet, one bag of salty popcorn and some jelly beans for me & DD. A bag of Aldi dupe chilli sensations for DH, don't think it was too expensive for a night out

RightOnTheEdge · 15/02/2026 00:07

I don't think tickets are that expensive but the snack prices are outrageous!

mumwithallthebooks · 15/02/2026 08:24

I really love the cinema but post-covid I didn't resume going until very recently, mostly because there weren't many films out that I actually wanted to see. We have an Everyman nearby and it is very much an indulgence there. Neither of us drink or smoke so this is our guilty pleasure!
