What do you feel is worth spending extra on?

I've got a bit obsessed with saving money, and as a result I'm constantly buying everything on the cheap. However, I sometimes wonder if I spent a bit more on certain things I'd benefit in some way.

For example, perhaps I'd properly hide my dark circles rather than sort of hide them, with a more expensive and better quality concealer.

Maybe if I bought a really decent brand new SUV, rather than stick with my older trusty Volvo which I own outright, I may worry less about whether it'll pass the MOT this year. Maybe it's a worthy investment.

Just a couple of examples.

What do you feel is worth spending a bit extra on, and what's NOT worth it?

Good quality seasonal food
Nice wine
Holidays (in comfortable hotels with a bed as good as mine at home)
Tickets to live music
Clothes - quite a bit from Vinted
Haircut and colours
Nice shoes

wanderingstarz · 14/02/2026 08:08

Baked beans
Salad cream
Coca cola

gianfrancogorgonzola · 14/02/2026 08:16

Agree with so many of these!

Botox. Good foundation. Cleanser / moisturiser doesn’t need to be expensive to balance those out!

An excellent cut and highlights make a massive difference

mattresses, bed linen. I even travel with a silk pillowcase.

trainers definitely! one excellent pair is worth its weight in gold.

coats. Quality coats last decades and still look great.

Tea bags and fresh roasted coffee beans. Literally never buy coffee out anymore, £4+ is just insane.

Eggs. Pulses - bold beans are a game changer.

Heating, I don't care one bit what my heating bill is (its actually quite reasonable) but my heating is on whenever I want.

Heatedrival · 14/02/2026 08:24

Shoes.
I work in one of the poorest areas in the country and the children have cheap, crappy shoes. They don’t fit properly or hold their shape. There are many things I wish for them including good shoes.

For me - food. I’d rather eat less and have better quality.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 14/02/2026 08:27

@fouroclockrock bin liners/bags are the same thing

Waterproof coats, I’m out at least twice a day on dog walks and really appreciate proper protection from the elements.

I remain on the search for a good waterproof coat - any brand you'd particularly recommend?

coodawoodashooda · 14/02/2026 08:34

Washing up liquid

Washing up liquid

I've switched to many but always return to fairy as it lasts longer and works better.
Also I've tried many fabric conditioners, but lenor and comfort comes at the top for their scents that lasts longer.

EleanorReally · 14/02/2026 08:53

loo paper
cheese
i wont say more but very particular about what brand i use

worth spending a bit more on bread

EleanorReally · 14/02/2026 08:57

EleanorReally · 14/02/2026 08:58

OhDear111 · 14/02/2026 09:01

Car. We don’t like cheap cars. We own them but they are not rubbish brands. It’s maybe a luxury but they don’t go wrong. Don’t like cheap jewellery either.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 14/02/2026 09:03

Most things to be honest. I would rather have fewer/use more sparingly/go less often with better quality things if possible.

beasmithwentworth · 14/02/2026 09:06

Slippers! I spent years buying supermarket ones that lasted less than a year then bought some much more expensive sheepskin one and I still love them 6 years later.

revitalash instead of the cheaper eyelash serums.

Other than that then yes to eggs, tomatoes, bread, eggs etc

RampantIvy · 14/02/2026 09:08

I subscribe to Which? and always do my research when I need to replace expensive items.

Many of the things listed on here are Which? Best Buys.

Unless you have allergies or temperamental skin I feel that expensive skincare is a complete waste of money, especially make up removers and facial washes as they are on the skin for such a short time.

Tonissister · 14/02/2026 09:15

Good quality cashmere sweaters. I bought three this winter. One or other of them has been on my back every single day so far. And I've only just washed them. They seem to repel dirt, they don't absorb cooking smells or sweat. They keep you incredibly warm but not sweaty. They seem to adapt their thermal qualities according to the temperature, like magic.

With PP on binliners, tinned tomatoes, loo roll.

But ime, cheap shoes - well chosen - are every bit as good as more expensive ones. I have £30 Skechers that last far better than £100 Hoffs and incredible, plantar-healing flipflops from Amazon at £7.

And M&S/Uniqlo jeans and cords, Primark tees and PJs are every bit as good as brands that cost five times more.

Squirrelchops1 · 14/02/2026 09:19

Walking boots
Hair colour/cut
Heating
L'Occitane almond hand cream
Dermalogica face wash

SilverGlitterBaubles · 14/02/2026 09:27

Oh yes to bin liners and also
Coffee
Dark chocolate
Meat from local butcher
Haircut and highlights to blend in the pesky greys
Shoes
Boots
Coats (which I stalk vinted for)

Not bothered about
Brand new cars that instantly loose value
Hyped up products and supplements targeting menopause
Luxe gym wear - high street shops are doing well made dupes far less expensive and it’s for sweaty exercise anyway
Luxury ready meals that are cheaper and healthier to make yourself

DancingNotDrowning · 14/02/2026 09:33

My DH can be notoriously tight in the most ridiculous of ways: he will literally buy me VCA diamonds whilst buying cheap basics. We now have a running list of things that must not be scrimped on:

laundry pods
kitchen roll
washing up liquid
window cleaner printer paper
sellotape
kitchen foil
knives
bed linen
shampoo

Food generally but things he typically would bother about but I think make a massive difference:
• tinned tomatoes
• eggs
• french butter
• stock
• tonic water

Samanabanana · 14/02/2026 09:42

Shoes, tea bags, tinned tomatoes, wine, coats, retinol

holdtheline11 · 14/02/2026 09:44

Good quality food - fills you up more and has more nutrients. My veg box has changed my life in that sense as i know it's local, fresh, high quality, organic and saves me thinking/shopping.
Not even that much more expensive.
