What do you feel is worth spending extra on?

I've got a bit obsessed with saving money, and as a result I'm constantly buying everything on the cheap. However, I sometimes wonder if I spent a bit more on certain things I'd benefit in some way.

For example, perhaps I'd properly hide my dark circles rather than sort of hide them, with a more expensive and better quality concealer.

Maybe if I bought a really decent brand new SUV, rather than stick with my older trusty Volvo which I own outright, I may worry less about whether it'll pass the MOT this year. Maybe it's a worthy investment.

Just a couple of examples.

What do you feel is worth spending a bit extra on, and what's NOT worth it?

Food, especially when it comes to fresh produce.
Most makeup and skincare.

Not worth it (at least for me!):
Expensive hair care - good old bottle of Elvive does a better job!
Pricey furniture in many cases - I was genuinely quite horrified that everything comes flat pack nowadays, à la Ikea!

Edited

Agree with food, but not skincare. I'm lucky that my skin likes anything I use.

For food I will buy free range chicken, posh tomatoes and decent olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Oh, and Mutti branded tinned tomatoes, although Cirio comes a very close second.

Jamesblonde2 · 13/02/2026 23:00

Bedding.
Towels.

RampantIvy · 13/02/2026 23:02

Just read the rest of the thread. Glad I'm not the only one particular about tomatoes.

CloseEncountersOfTheLoveKind · 13/02/2026 23:05

Love bamboo socks, they are SO comfortable.
i honestly have been avoiding them partly coz of cost, and partly coz of the hype.
I was thinking that surely the bamboo socks 🧦 can’t be that superior? Yes they are 🤣

Happiestathome · 13/02/2026 23:07

I’m not a big spender, but I will spend money on heating, because I just can’t live my life cold. Also, as mentioned, vine tomatoes are a must.

Fgfgfg · 13/02/2026 23:08

Sheets - must have decent sheets. Friend was appalled at the cost but they last for years.
Heavy stainless steel saucepans
Bin liners (Costco)
Tomatoes
Kitchen knives - spent a lot of money on a decent knife 20 years ago and still use it every day.

Over half term, I treat ds to an upgraded food shop, to make it feel more luxurious. Trying to offset the terrible weather & endless exam revision.

I hate cheap synthetic clothes so I'm looking at lovely linen trousers and cotton sweaters for spring.

I'd get a few early nights to deal with dark shadows, and valet the Volvo. 😊

apapuchi · 14/02/2026 01:20

Washing up liquid, toothpaste and tomatoes. Buy cheap and buy twice (I know I'm getting old now but I notice the difference with these things massively).

Beesandhoney123 · 14/02/2026 01:28

Eggs, tomatoes. Bras. Lovely comfy bras.

Therewerelions · 14/02/2026 01:28

Tea bags, coffee and toilet roll.

Flukingflukes · 14/02/2026 01:41

Coffee, mayonnaise, cheese, meat, bedding, towels, bras.

catera · 14/02/2026 01:42

Grapes, the autumn crisp ones are so much nicer
British strawberries
a mattress (just got a new one and I LOVE it)
candles
duvet - really like my wool one

weirdly my towels are a mix of Asda and dunelm, over 20 years old and look great still

Negroany · 14/02/2026 01:58

Walking boots!

HeadyLamarr · 14/02/2026 03:30

Butter.
High thread count cotton bedding.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 14/02/2026 07:40

Running shoes, probably the thing I spend comparatively the most on but good shoes do make so much difference. Also, decent work out leggings and shorts, but I was for the sale for those.

most other things I do on a budget to be honest.

mum2jakie · 14/02/2026 07:42

Tea bags

ResusciAnnie · 14/02/2026 07:45

Food, 100%

Not exercise as countless free options

A gardener - I don’t know what I’m doing, too much to learn, and seeing the magically weed-free patio is priceless! And is getting us a few more years out of it rather than getting it relaid ££.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 14/02/2026 07:45

Bin liners
Toilet paper
Meat
Tomatoes (I only buy British ones and for some reason they're more expensive)

TowerOfWashing · 14/02/2026 07:46

I buy M&S fruit even when I'm.skint as it is much more likely to get eaten in my house.

Miranda65 · 14/02/2026 07:46

Food.
Good haircut.
Reliable car.
Hotel rooms.
Theatre tickets (always dress circle for me).
Probably lots of other things, tbh.

fouroclockrock · 14/02/2026 07:48

Burford Brown eggs
What’s the bin liner all about? I should line my bin and then add a bin bag?

RampantIvy · 13/02/2026 23:02

Me too! I only buy the on the vine ones. It took a self catering holiday for DH to notice my expensive tomato habit as I go though at least one punnet every couple of days! 🤭
Fortunately in summer I grow my own 😁

Jellybean23 · 14/02/2026 07:51

Worth spending on
quality bedding, electric blanket and duvet (100% down for me)
carpets
sofa
washing machine

Not worth spending on
branded cleaning products

1000StrawberryLollies · 14/02/2026 07:53

Good loose-leaf tea
Extra-virgin olive oil
Boots
Proper wool/cashmere knitwear (and proper wool to knit with)
I'd also say bread, if I weren't now gluten-intolerant

Not skincare. I think it's a total waste of money. I use Aldi Lacura caviar, both day and night moisturiser and it's easily as good as expensive stuff I've bought in the past.

RinielUrban · 14/02/2026 07:54

I’ve finally got into Erborian super bb cream and I love it. It’s expensive (for me) but it makes my skin look great (bad rosecea (sp))
I try and get a massage every couple of months.
I don’t go to the hairdressers (do it all myself) or get nails done etc so the massage is my treat.
Also decent red wine 🍷 worth every penny.
