What do you feel is worth spending extra on?

I've got a bit obsessed with saving money, and as a result I'm constantly buying everything on the cheap. However, I sometimes wonder if I spent a bit more on certain things I'd benefit in some way.

For example, perhaps I'd properly hide my dark circles rather than sort of hide them, with a more expensive and better quality concealer.

Maybe if I bought a really decent brand new SUV, rather than stick with my older trusty Volvo which I own outright, I may worry less about whether it'll pass the MOT this year. Maybe it's a worthy investment.

Just a couple of examples.

What do you feel is worth spending a bit extra on, and what's NOT worth it?

Oh my god YES. Actually I lie, that's one thing I have been spending a bit more on lately.

Kitchen roll

Blueeberry · 13/02/2026 21:11

Food, especially when it comes to fresh produce.
Most makeup and skincare.

Not worth it (at least for me!):
Expensive hair care - good old bottle of Elvive does a better job!
Pricey furniture in many cases - I was genuinely quite horrified that everything comes flat pack nowadays, à la Ikea!

Anything between you and the ground: shoes, mattresses, car tyres (depending what your driving needs are).

For me personally: premium travel and accommodation too. I've done my hard yards in economy seats and hotels.

WilderHawthorn · 13/02/2026 21:14

quality meat and food
shoes and winter coats
socks
a nice bottle of wine a couple of times a month

JaneVtwaddle · 13/02/2026 21:16

I agree with the hair care. I've got very thick hair which takes an age to wash and dry, so I have to use products which tame the frizz but also prevent it needing washing every other day (it takes a good hour to wash, dry and straighten so I like to go 4-5 days without washing).

Pantene, and at a push, the basic Aussie shampoo are the only ones that seem to achieve that for me.

On the vine tomatoes never the cheap ones

taste the difference fresh orange juice never the cheap concentrate stuff

Heyhelga · 13/02/2026 21:38

Good skincare products. Specifically the Simple brand.

Bread. I can't be doing with thin flimsy value brand bread.

Plankton89 · 13/02/2026 21:38

Tomatoes

BlackCat14 · 13/02/2026 21:47

Candles. And I’m not talking mega money like the £60 ones. But I’ll spend around £15 on nice ones from TK Maxx. I find the supermarket own ones, home bargains and Aldi etc that a lot of people rave over just smell of nothing.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 13/02/2026 21:52

Kitchen roll here too - I hate when DP buys a cheap one!
Cat food
Knitwear
Winter coat
Shoes/boots
Branded beans and ketchup (Heinz) and Diet Coke

unsync · 13/02/2026 22:00

Natural fibres.

FlorenceBlack · 13/02/2026 22:05

Waterproof coats, I’m out at least twice a day on dog walks and really appreciate proper protection from the elements.

Mwnci123 · 13/02/2026 22:11

Fruit for taste (especially berries and easy peelers), meat for animal welfare standards, salmon for not being disgusting, kids shoes because I'm a bit precious about their feet and because cheap ones don't last, and school trousers because cheap ones end up full of holes.

CraftyNavySeal · 13/02/2026 22:19

Eggs
Cat litter
Cars. Doesn’t have to be a brand new BMW but after realising my Fiat Panda had zero safety stars and could paralyse me in an accident I bought a newer one with all the safety bells and whistles.

FourForksSake · 13/02/2026 22:47

Loo roll

LunaTheCat · 13/02/2026 22:51

Socks .. merino
Summer clothes 100% cotton dresses

Temporaryname158 · 13/02/2026 22:54

I’ve found my tribe! 😂 I thought I was a lone weirdo about tomatoes and bin liners!!

I am also very frugal but have certain things I spend on

bin liners
vine tomatoes
trainers (not multiple pairs etc but owning one very comfy nice pair, as I live and work in them)
Morrisons semi dried mango slices
my central heating
holidays (never expensive and always deal seeking, but I won’t stay at home when I could be having a lovely time elsewhere!)

CluelessAboutBiology · 13/02/2026 22:54

Toilet roll.

HotAndHassled · 13/02/2026 22:55

Bread. Realised how awful supermarket bread is and now buy it from the bakery instead. Costs twice as much but we have it fresh on day one and toasted on day two.
Tinned tomatoes.

TheChosenTwo · 13/02/2026 22:55

Almost everything tbh!
I’m not rich but buying a lot of stuff on the cheap has proven to be a false economy to me in the long run so I now spend more and buy less. Apart from olive oil which I seem to spend more on and dh must drink it while he’s cooking as we go through a litre most weeks 😂
But yeah, I don’t really scrimp on much - be it cars, furniture, clothes, food, household appliances - it’s the best we can afford because most of the time it lasts longer.

Stammso · 13/02/2026 22:56

Teabags, instant coffee, saucepans.
