Going to a friend’s casual evening thing tomorrow. Want to contribute something but am pretty skint.

Another vote for the Florentines, or baklava.

Asda has a few things like Toblerone bites & Lily O'Brien truffles for £5 or less. It's a token, don't sweat it.

this is really cheap - under £1

This is a great idea! We've made similar, dead easy but they come out great

Get thee to TK Maxx for diffusers, candles, quirky chocolates, weird and colourful pasta, pestles and other penny-friendly options.

You'll have heard of these things called supermarkets......?

No need to be snarky.

The supermarkets I use certainly don't have wine for a fiver. I'd like to know where the OP finds this. Is that okay to ask? @Bjorkdidit

I always have this issue.
I take Waitrose or M&S bread sticks and flowers or a bottle of fizz.
@cleaningthebog Tesco have this rose at £5 with a club card or prosecco for £6

Besidemyselfwithworry · 13/02/2026 23:42

You could go to Asda and get the valentines meal deal and gift the Prosecco and then you’d have the food to yourself and the deal is really good 😊

Well that's you choice but the thread is about spending not too much money so its reasonable to assume the OP shops at one of majority of supermarkets that do sell perfectly drinkable wine for £5 a bottle.

Or as I said previously, just about every supermarket sells Cava for £5.75, which fits the OPs criteria of 'a fiver or so'.

Obviously I know better than to suggest Prosecco on here for fear of bringing out the 'I'd rather drink battery acid' crowd.

(No offence, @123123again and @Besidemyselfwithworry it seems to be a perfectly lovely drink to me, but what do we plebs know?).

@cleaningthebog Aldi has cava and Prosecco for around £5. At Christmas they had really decent Crémant de Loire for £8. They have champagne for £10. The wine selection is decent. I’m no connoisseur however.

Thanks All - it’s actually been postponed so maybe will have time to bake something next time!

Interested to know which supermarkets you shop at! Even waitrose sells wine for under £6.

Buy three bunches of daffodils, put them all together and wrap a nice ribbon or bit of twine/burlap around to make into one bouquet. Nobody dislikes daffodils at this time of year

I would appreciate this.

Lidl and Aldi have plenty of wines below £5. I think Sainsburys, ASDA, Tesco etc also have budget wines £3.99 up. Supermarket wines in the £5 - 10 range may be better but some of the cheapo wines are perfectly acceptable IMO. I buy the good ones when they do the 25% off six bottles offer.

JustGiveMeReason · 15/02/2026 16:59

@cleaningthebog I think it would be a lot quicker for you to name a supermarket that doesn't have some wine you can buy for around a fiver. As I've always managed to get a bottle for between £3.99 and £6.

The perfect gift

How about those crisp bread cheese seeded rectangle crackers Sainsbury’s do them or Waitrose

BillieWiper · 15/02/2026 17:49

You could make bread or a cake? Focaccia? Or onion rolls? Or a crumble? Home made coleslaw?
