You know what pissed me off almost the most? When he said that the men's hockey team was coming to the WH he added "And bring the women's team with you. You just bring them'. As if the men's team could simply order them to come or drag them by the hair, caveman style. That one sentence encapsulates his attitude towards women: If a man commands, you must obey.

<Takes a bow> You're welcome, glad to add to your vocabulary! It's an old US Navy term. I learnt it from my dad, who picked it up on a troop transport ship in the Pacific during WWII. When I was little it always made me giggle and think "Dad said butt".

I think it's a fair exchange for all the slang terms I've learnt on MN. My favourite so far is still 'bawbag', although I've been known to throw out the occasional pillock and bellend from time to time.

Don't I just wish!!!

My dad's folks were born in the UK and I can remember as a teen begging Dad to see if he could get UK citizenship based on that so I could get it too. Mostly because of all the British rock bands (ie cute guys). Apparently if he had tried then (the '70s) he probably could have! But no joy for me now as they've tightened up the 'by descent' laws.

I'll just have to consider myself one 'in spirit'.

Why does Trump always have an expression like a 2 yr old proudly showing off what he did in the potty?

Fuck, I just caught a short clip. He is literally full of shit, I think i answered my own question.

Scuttlebutt I knew (I think it may be Royal Navy too) but I am also fond of "shunpike". I especially like the fact that the satnav allows you to set it to "avoid tolls" and makes it positively respectable to use a shunpike.

1 MIN AGO: Japan Picks Canada — Toyota Abandons Alabama, $9B Megafactory Goes to Canada
It started as a whisper in industry circles.
Now it’s turning into a political firestorm.
Reports claim that Toyota Motor Corporation has scrapped plans for a massive $9 billion EV and battery plant in Alabama—choosing instead to move the entire project to Ontario, Canada.
If true, the implications are enormous.
The narrative framing the move says Toyota opted for long-term stability in Canada rather than navigating tariff uncertainty and shifting trade policy in the U.S. Under this account, predictable rules and calmer political waters outweighed incentives south of the border.
And that’s where it gets political.
Some commentators are calling it a strategic win for Canadian leadership under Mark Carney, arguing that global manufacturers are prioritizing stability over aggressive trade rhetoric. Others say the situation is being spun for impact—and that official filings and direct company statements are needed before drawing conclusions.
But here’s what has people talking:
A $9B facility doesn’t just represent concrete and steel. It means thousands of jobs. Supply chains. Local businesses. Entire communities reshaped around a single megafactory.
Supporters of the “Canada move” theory say it proves multinational corporations favor steady policy environments over tariff threats. Critics argue the report may be exaggerated—or politically amplified without full confirmation.
As of now, the claims should be treated cautiously until verified by Toyota and relevant government agencies.
Still…
If a global auto giant truly chose Canada over Alabama because of trade and political risk, that would send a powerful message to investors worldwide.
And insiders hint this may not be the only manufacturing decision quietly shifting north.

When 80% of the voters can't be arsed to care, WTF shoudl I ?

To be fair, this is a pretty small election in a very small city on the Tuesday night after a major wind/snow storm - hundreds of thousands were without power as of the weekend. Lewiston is also home to a large Somali population and there's been a lot of ICE activity there, so together I'd think those factors depressed the vote.

Unfortunately that won't stop MAGlites from saying the difference between the two What, fewer than how many votes in it?) is so small as to be insignificant.

I take a dim view of countries that bang on (and on and on) about "democracy" whilst simultaneously excusing piss poor turnouts.

That includes the UK, too, by the way.

It's quite sobering to realise that over a year on from Trump#2 81% of an electorate are quite happy with how things are.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/02/2026 17:59

I don't think that is entirely fair, SJ. They may be entirely unhappy with how things are but unwilling to go to the polls on this particular occasion for a number of reasons including but not limited to the possibility of being attacked by gangs of legitimised thugs and criminals, that you have no power and are freezing in your house and don't want to go outside in the snow and get even colder, and that there is no streetlighting because the power supply has been disrupted and you are at work until after dark.

Life isn't fair. Life is a perpetual struggle to keep those that would oppress you at bay.

If people already feel unsafe physically voting, then it's too late.

I've never swerved a vote in my entire adult life. Even when it was like a strand of cress in a vindaloo.

Ultimately a citizens only legitimate avenue to change is voting.

I did fail to vote for a police chief constable, on the grounds that all the candidates were equally bad and the post was made up nonsense; but I went along and wrote a rude remark on the paper, because otherwise what did Granny chain herself to railings for?

On the whole I agree with you, but I am not part of a minority being targeted by criminal gangs; some of the people in Lewiston are.

You know, it just occurred to me that the Harry Potter character, Stan Shunpike, is aptly name. As is conductor on the Knight Bus and I'm sure they 'shunned a lot of pikes' in their job of picking up stranded wizards.

I was just thinking that. The phrase 'Cuban Missile Crisis' popped into my head. I know the circumstances are very different, but this is too close to home for my comfort.

I don't disagree about the principle and am a pretty keen voter, but if I look back over the years, when I had three small kids and a crazy work life, I probably missed a ballot initiative or a local election or two. Even without the snow and the thugs, these state level elections can be tricky when they're out of the usual voting cycle. They don't get the same level of publicity as by-elections here.

That said, the number of people who opt out is depressing, in part, because a lot of them see the whole system as too broken to bother. My young adult kids have lots of friends who see the two parties as indistinguishable in that they're mostly populated by old men with not much understanding of the world young people are facing. They see them all taking donations from AIPAC and some vote third party and some walk away in disgust.

The Democrats have got to find a way to make themselves seem relevant and at the moment they're failing.

Update in NYT about the Cuban Border Control attack.

...Ten people traveling on a Florida-based speedboat who engaged in a deadly gun battle with Cuban border troops were armed Cuban nationals living in the United States, Cuban state media reported on Wednesday.
The report, citing a statement from the Ministry of Interior, said that “preliminary declarations” by men detained from the boat had indicated they were intent on “an infiltration with terrorist ends.”
The Cuban government did not provide any more details about the suspected terrorism links. But it said the men had been carrying weapons, Molotov cocktails, bulletproof jackets and camouflage gear...

A mini bay of pigs ?

Who knows what is going on really. The oil shortage must be getting the regime annoyed.

And talking of regimes, PRC state media doing it's tariff stuff to Trump. Here is a gentle reminder to Trump about trade wars.
