Me , my husband and children went away for a weekend. I went into a retail shop, looked around with my daughter. I had a bit of a migraine had my sunnys on. I pickrd up some bits. I put alot of things on klarna as its intrest free. Anyway realised at the self check out that wasnt an option. My daughter was moaning , my husband was ringing me saying hurry up. So i was stressing!!! The lady that worked of the check out was lovely i askrd her a question because an item said it was cheaper but she was there when i scanned it incase it wasnt so she could take it off. When i finished i then was about to scan a bag and a different lady came over and said have u already scanned the bag i said no im about to. She said oo let me check something this till has been playing up. So she done something a got some sort of receipt. I scanner the back paid for it, put the other items back because they didnt have klarna so i thought not gonna get them all. Anyway as i was leaving i was just looking at the receipt thinking wha did she get out of my self scanner one ? I got in the car put my daughter in. And then off we went had my drink and something to eat then look in my bag. I bagged 3 items i didnt scan 😩😩 i am nowhaving a major anxiety attack thinking omg didnthe lady thought i stole???! Omg did they call the police ? Im i gonna be arrested ??? I have never stole in my life!! I called customer service & explained said can i pay over the phone. and they said take it back to a store near me. I have 3 major appointments( health related) this week so i cant make it this week. What should i do? Im freaking out. Has this ever happened to anyone and had police at there door for an honest mistake :( i feel sick to my stomach! My didnt someone stop me 😭😭😭

You're fine. Mistakes happen. I once walked out of the shop with two boxes of beer because I'd put them underneath the trolley on the lower level, and was stressed over the checkout not working properly etc. I realised quickly, went back and paid, but they just laughed about it and said it happens all the time.

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 20:14

@Arlanymor they said i couldnt pay over the phone and to return to store.

So why are you so worried? You need to calm down.

I once left a hotel and forgot to pay for our drinks.
I phoned them within an hour to explain and pay over the phone. They said not to worry about it.

@megacat not at all, it was a very busy store! I wanted to see if they used klarna which i asked the lady and she said no. There is no need for me to steal. Me and my husband have good jobs earn enough money .

You would be surprised at how many people steal/shoplift despite having plenty of money.

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 22:24

@BooneyBeautiful why would they need to do that if they have the money? X

LozzaCh0ps · 09/02/2026 22:28

I wouldn’t worry OP, pay when you can next go!

My mum has cognitive impairment and wandered out of the Co-Op having messed up the payment and it hadn’t gone through (she doesn’t understand contactless payments etc). They were very understanding, actually told us not to worry about it, but I did try to work out everything she “bought” then went back to pay.

And I was re-scanned the other day for a quite a big shop and had (genuinely) missed a little pot of cumin seeds - they didn’t even mention it and beeped it through. I think they figured an 80p jar of cumin isn’t the thing someone would nick in an otherwise big shop 😅

People can be more understanding than you think, especially if you confess.

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 22:35

@LozzaCh0ps aww bless your mum, that must be hard for her going shopping. I hope shes ok!
im gonna definitely go at some point this week and make the time so i can breathe.xxx

I once walked out of Morrisons with my fully weekly shop not knowing the transaction required a pin after I’d attempted contactless. Realised once I got home, went straight back to pay. The staff member on self checkout couldn’t be less bothered, told me it happens a lot and I was the first person to ever come back.

Brightsky210 · 09/02/2026 22:41

I genuinely worry about people that worry this much. I would have just got on with my day and moved on. Jesus Christ you didn’t rob a bank

Ghht · 09/02/2026 22:49

@Starrrz

Just in case you’re still worried:

The law around theft states that you must intend to ‘permanently deprive’ the person or business of said item in order for your actions to qualify as theft.

A) You had no intention to take the item and this can be proved by your actions at the time, I.e. you were scanning items and you were there with the cashier and therefore your alibi can be confirmed
B) you have offered a form of payment to the company/ have offered to return the items, again confirming you had no intention to ‘permanently deprive’

Your actions do equate to theft in the eyes of the law and you would not be prosecuted (I work in law).

Can I just highlight anyway that the shop is unlikely to notice any items missing if it’s not noticed at the time (I.e. when you’re walking away from the shop).

Why are you using Klarna then?

Stop worrying no one will care about the stuff

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 09/02/2026 22:55

The only caveat is if the store use ai for shop lifting they are just banning people instead of prosecuting as it's cheaper. Ai gets it wrong sometimes.

A couple of times I've missed scanning something but always gone back and paid. Get laughed at but I don't care, I'd rather pay.

I forgot to pay for milk from my local supermarket several times when the kids were small, put it in the buggy hood as had too much in the basket and fit nicely (which is why it was always milk), then forgot when at the checkout as sleep deprived, dealing with upset babies, etc. it just slipped my mind. I just always mentioned it the next time and paid for it then. After about the third time I stopped putting it in the buggy hood as realised I clearly wasn't capable enough to do it!

It wasn't theft as no intention to steal it. It was a mistake that I put right.

Your response to this situation is far more worrying than the situation itself. Do you generally love drama or find yourself constantly in the midst of it? Or have anxiety or something? I think you should consider why it's affected you the way it has. It doesn't bode well for your DC if you can't react reasonably to a minor mistake.

That made me laugh because when I worked in a supermarket that was a known technique of shop lifters to pretend to forget stuff in the pram 🤣 and then pay for cheaper items

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 23:04

@Ghht thank you for your message.

well if they did i would of rather of them said so i was aware there and then and could of just paid,

its just going round in my head thinking did that woman think i done it on purpose if she was aware of it, and if so would she of called the police thats why i was worried that they would come to my house i would be mortified.

im going to definitely go back and return them as soon as, just hoping i do that and its all fine x

@ImFinePMSL i know i always stress about everything in life. People always say im going to give myself a heartattack! I try not to but in the car i got upset infront of my husband, he said whats wrong with you. It makes me feel like something is wrong for feeling soooo stressed over something that people wouldnt get so stressed over you know x

Something IS wrong with you for getting that stressed about things. Possibly an anxiety disorder. Try some breathing exercises and some perspective. Stress and anxiety of this level is bad for your health and absolutely not normal.

BooneyBeautiful · 09/02/2026 23:25

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 22:24

@BooneyBeautiful why would they need to do that if they have the money? X

Compulsion, the thrill, greed? Who knows. It does happen though. Many years ago I knew of a woman who was part of a very wealthy family. Huge detached house, thriving business, all high-end cars etc. No financial worries at all. She was arrested and convicted of shoplifting.

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 23:28

@BooneyBeautiful wow thats shocking isnt it! When she had all that in life and she shoplifted! Did she do it a lot? Thst really shocks me. When ever ive been out and ever witnessed it always seems to be leas fortunate or some of the drugs addics x

Uppitymuppity · 09/02/2026 23:31

They don't even call the police for actual shopb lifters op, let alone someone who's made an honest mistake and called them to tell them. Calm down and return the items when you can, they won't even be giving you a second thought right now.

Starrrz · 09/02/2026 23:37

@Uppitymuppity i know i sound pathetic dont i, but i cant help it i guess. Im going to return it when i can. Will deffo be end of this week start or next week then its all cleared. I was just having images of police, arrest etc. i used to work in a supermarket when i was younger and the male staff used ti search them , ring the police they were brutal! I used ti feel sorry for some people that were less fortunate and just because of there appearance they woulf almost blame them and they didnt even do anything wrong. That used to make me feel so sorry for them x

Is this a joke? Just take it as a win and enjoy your free shit. I recently saw a smack ed stuff 10 steaks down his pants and walk out of co op. He eye balled me on the way out. I went and told staff and he shrugged and said yeh nothing we can do. Police don’t come out for anything less than £250. Made me think why the hell am I bothering paying for my food when I can just walk out without paying and no one cares. I’ll admit I never scan bags at self check outs either….fuck em 😅

Starrrz · 10/02/2026 00:00

@AlinaRawlings thats so bad isnt it!! Why on earth would he be stealing all those steaks 😨😨 i know a lot of people who dont scan bags , i always do because i even get scared about that. The amount of bags i have and i still forget to take any with me so i always buy more xx

Grin. So I could have saved a fortune!

I don't get it though - Why would they come back to pay for something cheaper if they got away with it?

Emma6cat · 10/02/2026 00:32

Wow, your worry is off the scale..... nobody in the shop cares, or the Police for that matter. I worked in a Supermarket, happens all the time...
