Is it safe to bath a new puppy daily?

BIL and partner got a new puppy (10 weeks old) and it turns out his partner doesn’t like the dog smell so she is bathing the puppy daily. Is this ok ? I said to her I’m not sure it’s recommended? She said she’s using a gentle shampoo and it’s fine.

I am getting angry just reading this post! That poor pup.

Justwingingit2005 · 09/02/2026 18:37

Poor little pup. His skin and coat will suffer.
It's cruel.

Chiefangel · 09/02/2026 18:37

It’s cruel. That’s poor puppy. The partner needs reporting.

That’s appalling. And she’s an idiot who shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near a dog.

Zeborah · 09/02/2026 18:38

No no no! I feel worried for this poor pup!

Holdonforsummer · 09/02/2026 18:43

This is weird and not ok. Definitely bordering on puppy abuse. They have oils on their fur and she is just stripping it all off.

Pinemartin4 · 09/02/2026 18:43

Common sense would tell you no...Tell them to ask the teacher at school in the morning.

bowchicawowwow · 09/02/2026 18:57

As others have said, you shouldn’t be bathing a dog daily. That’s insane. It depends on breed, but many like labs etc have oils in their coats that are needed to protect their skin. Bathing daily will strip it. I have show dogs that can go months without a bath. Unless they have rolled in poo most dirt will brush out.

Poor pup, quite often the smell from a pup is puppy breath, and if you've never owned a pup before, you could mistake it for a general smell. A lot of people love puppy breath; some don't. I remember years ago visiting a friend with her new puppy and her saying how disgusting it smelled! I love puppy breath, but I'm dog mad!

spiderlight · 09/02/2026 19:09

Poor puppy. She's going to damage his/her skin, but also potentially set up a long-term fear of being handled if the pup isn't enjoying the baths.

tealandteal · 09/02/2026 19:17

Each post sounds worse! My 13yo does sleep at the foot of the bed but even I don’t allow a puppy in bed. It’s too high for them to jump on and off and risk damaging their joints. What kind of dog is it? Is it toilet trained? I also wouldn’t allow a puppy in bed to avoid accidents.

My 8 month puppy slept in her crate initially when she first came home for a sense of security and to keep her safe at night. I now leave the door open and she sleeps in there sometimes or sometimes down by the side of the bed. Are they doing any training with the puppy?

Ughhhhh77 · 09/02/2026 19:20

Oh I love the smell of puppies 🥰 she sounds unhinged, please don’t let her bath the dog every day 😢

DuchessofStaffordshire · 09/02/2026 19:30

My Labrador had a bath the other day after he'd decided to roll in fox poo. He very rarely has a bath as it strips the oils out of his coat.

LaLaLoca · 09/02/2026 19:33

Your poor pup. Please take the advice on here, dogs need to be brushed regularly to remove dirt and dander. Not bathed daily!

Electricsausages · 09/02/2026 19:37

Wait till they walk it in the rain and mud or it rolls in fox poo 🤢

JoyOfSpecs · 09/02/2026 19:52

That is cruel. That poor dog. Fucking people.

ilovepixie · 09/02/2026 19:54

That’s cruel. Poor dog. I’d be taking it off them!

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 09/02/2026 20:00

They need to get in the bin and rehome the poor dog.

What a shame for the small soul.

LemaxObsessive · 09/02/2026 20:06

Please don’t leave it until Wednesday

TheWildZebra · 09/02/2026 20:09

Dog needs rehoming with people who know what they’re doing!

Luckyingame · 09/02/2026 20:24

Fucking hell.
Get a robotic dog.
🙄

Pricelessadvice · 09/02/2026 20:27

They shouldn’t have a dog. They’re going to hurt the pups skin and could potentially make him poorly with the constant wet/dry (causes temperature issues for pups) while he’s still so young.

liveforsummer · 09/02/2026 20:28

my dog is 6 and she’s been bathed less than a handful of times , maybe 4! only on the rare occasion she’s rolled in something smelly. Her coat is so glossy and she doesn’t smell doggy. It will be terrible for that poor puppys skin to keep bathing it

Munchyseeds2 · 09/02/2026 20:49

They sound completely stupid
Poor puppy😥

pteromum · 09/02/2026 21:05

This is not good.

What Type of dog is it? Some will cope better than others.

Unfortunately, unless the dog is hurt, no rescue is likely to intervene.

so if fed, walked, taken to vet etc, it’s going to have to be a family matter.

I have been on Mumsnet long enough to know people and relationships are weird.

But here, farmers, with complex sister in law and sister relationships, we would still say get a grip and stop washing the dog or I will take it. they would take the huff, or not, and it would blow over, or not.

You just pick your hill and go from there.
