Is it safe to bath a new puppy daily?

BIL and partner got a new puppy (10 weeks old) and it turns out his partner doesn’t like the dog smell so she is bathing the puppy daily. Is this ok ? I said to her I’m not sure it’s recommended? She said she’s using a gentle shampoo and it’s fine.

I have a breed that needs regular grooming, the groomer wouldn’t accept him til he was 6 months old and then only for a bath and hygiene trim. The dogs puppy coat won’t stand frequent bathing and will smell worse because their natural oils help with smell.

PolkaDotPorridge · 09/02/2026 22:44

No it’s not safe or normal, how is she so ignorant?!

I find they smell doggier after a bath! It’s not good for their fur and skin to wash it every day. You can get leave in conditioner for dogs, she could give it a spritz of that. Although I’m unsure why she got one if she doesn’t like the smell of dogs. I certainly wouldn’t want to bath and dry an adult dog every day.

I always think our DDog smells much more after bathing. She’s the only DDog we’ve ever had though so I thought it was just her! Smile

My friend was similar.
She had a puppy in lockdown and couldn’t believe the smell saying she thought people’s homes who had dogs were because they weren’t clean people/ didn’t clean or hoover etc.
She also didn’t realise she’d be up at 6am every morning.

Needless to say, she got rid after a few weeks. Unfair as the kids had bonded with the pet and it was just settling into its first home. Thankfully the breeder took it back.

My friend then used the excuse that it gave the kids allergies- it didn’t but I think she was too embarrassed to tell the truth.

I couldn’t be friends with someone so cruel and stupid. Poor puppy and poor children.

Presumably like many other idiots, she thinks dogs are the same as humans. Not that I would bathe a 10 week old baby daily, either. BIL sounds equally idiotic. Hopefully they won’t have children.

There is nothing nicer than the biscuity smell of a dog.I wash mine every month or so and she doesn't smell "dirty"

What an absolute idiot. I feel sorry for the poor pup and her DC.

CaptainMyCaptain · 10/02/2026 15:33

Puppy smell is lovely. She definitely shouldn't be bathing it daily. Wait until it rolls in fox poo or a dead rat what will they do then?

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 10/02/2026 16:17

Its fucking winter! That poor little pup is going to freeze. I had to.wash my pup after she pooped in her crate and rolled in it. I was incredibly gentle and didnt soak her through but she still hates baths. Tell your bil that his idiot is mistreating the dog.

I’m meant to be popping round again on Wednesday so I’ll talk to her again. I didn’t know anything about puppies that’s why I thought I’d check as she kept saying it’s fine it’s gentle shampoo but I knew it didn’t seem a good idea

She says she's using a "gentle" shampoo - does she mean a human shampoo?
Puppies don't need to be washed and certainly not with something that isn't designed for dogs...
She sounds nuts tbh and I would worry that the puppy isn't safe there....

NewDogOwner · 10/02/2026 17:14

Please say it's not human shampoo.

DinoLil · 10/02/2026 17:17

What?? No!!!

ginasevern · 10/02/2026 18:00

@smellypuppies Tell your SIL to take the dog back to the breeders. They aren't remotely fit to be looking after a dog and personally I'd call the RSPCA. Your SIL sounds thick as fucking shit. Please OP, help that poor little mite.

Bryonyberries · 10/02/2026 18:35

What type of dog is it? Some breeds have a more doggy smell than others. Puppies usually have a lovely warm hay like smell if they are naturally clean. I don’t think I ever bathed my puppies and my adult dog only gets bathed at the groomers or washed down after a trip to the beach or after swimming (not with shampoo unless completely mucky). You have to just accept that dogs have a smell if you want to have one.

GoldenGumballs · 10/02/2026 18:41

She’s doing a lot of damage. Ignorance is cruelty. This could create a lot of skin and behavioural problems. What happens if the pup gets eczema or anal gland problems. Will she try washing these away too. Dogs are supposed to smell they are not accessories. Please educate her.

Wetcoatsandmudagain · 10/02/2026 18:54

Tell her to ring the vets for advise! They will give her a ticking off she might actually listen to.

I’m not sure exactly but I know it’s some kind of poodle cross ?

BIL has always wanted one. She thought they were really cute and didn’t apparently realise they smell !

So, so thick...

Tinytimmy123 · 10/02/2026 19:18

Some people shouldn't have pets. These 2 are fucking ridiculous . Please show them this thread. Assholes.

Unfortunately I can’t imagine the RSPCA will do a thing. Years ago I had a neighbour who left theor Dog on a chain in the garden with very irregular food and water and no shelter. It was minus 5 and the RSPCA could not have been less interested.

Sadly I know this is true. I had an almost identical situation with a neighbour and he was a repeat offender. My comment was a knee jerk reaction really. I just hope the OP can pursuade her shallow and idiotic SIL to stop inflicting harm on this poor puppy.

mindutopia · 12/02/2026 18:32

No, poor thing. Unfortunately, dogs smell. They aren’t bad as puppies but get worse as they get older. It sounds like a puppy isn’t for them. Btw, my dog has had about 3 baths in her life at 4.5.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 12/02/2026 18:33

Poor puppy. Leave it alone.
