I feel crap, on the sofa with a blanket for a quiet day. Need a new book to read but nothing I own is taking my fancy. Would love to get stuck into a page turner i can get on my kindle

This doesn’t happen to me very often (where I struggle to put a book down), I was like this with
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

Probably a couple more but those sprang to mind first.

The best books I have read recently are:
A Gentleman in Moscow (Amor Towles)
Educated (Tara Westover)
Lessons in Chemistry (Lee Eisenberg) and
The Marriage Portrait ( Maggie O’Farrell).

I am currently re-reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, which I am very much enjoying.

The Marriage Portrait. I'm halfway through this on Audible, I bought it for a long drive. You've reminded me to pick it back up.

Cloud Atlas is really good.
I loved A Gentleman In Moscow too.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell though - I couldn't finish it. It's awful!

I couldn’t finish it either. I gave up. I had such high hopes…..

ShodAndShadySenators · 08/02/2026 20:24

I also read Stephen King's Later on holiday, four hours straight sitting on a balcony absolutely mesmerised. So gripping!

A lot of his books are like that but I don't always have the time to just sit there with it and no interruptions.

WonderingAndOverthinking · 08/02/2026 20:58

I listened to Fingersmith on Audible - I think the accents/voices really helped with the story telling.

I started Last One at the Party by Bethany Clift last night and have just climbed into bed to finish it off - been out for the day with the kids otherwise it would have been done and dusted by now!

"Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine". It's superb 💕

Have you read Strange Sally Diamond? If you liked EOICF then you’ll enjoy that too I think.
Both brilliant books.

Last One at at the Party is fab! I read it a couple of years ago, so well written! I was a little traumatised 😂

MissBattleaxe · 08/02/2026 21:37

I am currently chomping through Don't Let Him In by Lisa Jewell. It's completely addictive.

Owwmumo1 · 08/02/2026 22:05

I have enjoyed Bob Mortimer’s Satsuma Complex and Avocado Hotel. I read them in his voice.

The lion the witch and the wardrobe. It’s like a comfort blanket to me

Bebravemoise · 08/02/2026 23:06

I couldn't finish it either, nor Butter. I had that one out of the library twice too!

On the other hand I also read Strange Sally Diamond in 1 day.

Dungeon Crawler Carl

I started reading it and finished the same day and started on the second. Within a month I'd binged all 7 and I'm now eagerly counting down the days to the release of book 8 in early May.

My husband is listening to the audio books of this at the moment and I listened to some of it on a 3 hour car journey, it's great!

Butter - Asako Yuzuki

I want to read this one.

Bbq1 · 08/02/2026 23:45

Agree with so many of the suggestions. I recently read The List of Suspicious Things which was a great, uplifting and nostalgic read.

The Tent, The Bucket, and Me by Emma Kennedy.

The Maeve Kerrigan books by Jane Casey rattle by pleasantly

The Maeve Kerrigan books by Jane Casey

This is what I was going to suggest. Excellent crime series with nicely described relationships between characters.

I just read James in one day (though TBF I was laid up in bed).

Ooh, yes! Me too. Wonderful, angry book.

I’m saving this for my long haul flight at the end of the month .
