I've just finished The Hidden Girl by Lucinda Riley (well, rewritten by her son after her death). I even got up early this morning to finish it! Darker than I was expecting, but literally have gone from start to finish.

Fun silly read - The husbands by Holly Gramazio.

A terrible kindness was fabulous but had me in absolute floods.

lechatnoir · 08/02/2026 16:40

Just finished The Names - absolutely loved it and read it in two days.

Came to say this!

I have tried several of her books and I really don't like her style of writing. It would never be a writer I'd suggest 🤔

Dontcallmescarface · 08/02/2026 16:42

The Botanist's Daughter - Kayte Nunn.
Away with the Penquins - Hazel Prior

I read both of these during a recent hospital stay and loved them. I was a bit bored by day 4 though as I'd only brought those 2 with me.

Friendlygingercat · 08/02/2026 16:42

Dune by Frank Herbert. Back in the early 70s I stayed up all night to read it.

Anything by Sarah Waters.
The Crimson Petal and The White/Under The Skin by Michel Faber.

You're my kinda reader.

I'll add anything by William Boyd, particularly Any Human Heart.

HighStreetOtter · 08/02/2026 16:44

East of Eden, Steinbeck. Read it recently and loved it. Going to be a Netflix adaption soon I think.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 08/02/2026 16:46

I always recommend The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels - Janice Halley. So brilliant.

sugarapplelane · 08/02/2026 16:47

I couldn’t put down Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I was transfixed.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2026 16:53

@CastlesinSpain

we can’t all like the same things!

The only one of hers I didn’t like is Affinity

Fingersmith was 5 star for me

Ophy83 · 08/02/2026 17:02

This is inspiring me to re-read all my Sarah Waters books. It's been a while but they are so good.

I recently read and loved The Cut Throat Trial by SJ Fleet (aka the secret barrister). The story of a murder trial from the perspective of various protagonists including the prosecutor, a defence lawyer, a defendant etc with some case papers thrown in. If you like courtroom dramas it's a good one.

I loved Fingersmith and anything by William Boyd - Any Human Heart and The Romantic I read quickly and loved.

Read in a day though, each of John Boyne's Elements (they are short but punchy)

A Terrible Kindness. Read it in one go - still stayed with me for a long time.

This book stayed with me for a long time too! It was a book club pick last December and I thought not the cheeriest of Christmas reads!

I read Strange Sally Diamond and The Eights pretty quickly so they’re also my recommendations!

MarzipanMice · 08/02/2026 17:08

The Husbands by Holly Gramazio - absolutely loved this book. I was so confused at first, but really got into it and loved it!

Echoes on a Fractal Line by Lee-Anne McAulay - Scottish historical fiction. Easy read and enjoyable, again really liked it!

Lillygolightly · 08/02/2026 17:08

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir - was absolutely fantastic and whilst I didn’t manage it one sitting as work/kids etc I always hated having to put it down and couldn’t wait to pick it up again.

The edge of collapse by Kyla Stone - post apocalyptic style thriller and a series.

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters had me completely gripped.

I recently read The English Understand Wool in one sitting - fab book - but it is more like a short story.

My elderly uncle was given a copy of Jane Eyre and stayed up through the night to finish it. he called me and said "why didn't anyone tell me what the classics were like before now"

"Charlotte Bronte's publisher George Smith recounted the effect that receipt of the manuscript of Jane Eyre had upon him. Smith began reading it on Sunday morning, cancelled his lunch, cancelled a meeting and read it all in one day."

dumplinggirl · 08/02/2026 17:13

Also voting for a terrible kindness...adored it

namechangeabc123 · 08/02/2026 17:16

Anything by Frieda McFadden. Her books are quite trashy and ridiculous at times, but once I pick them up I can never put them down.

cosimnotwhereitsat · 08/02/2026 17:21

Ooh lurking for later

DoAWheelie · 08/02/2026 17:23

Dungeon Crawler Carl

I started reading it and finished the same day and started on the second. Within a month I'd binged all 7 and I'm now eagerly counting down the days to the release of book 8 in early May.

The wedding people.

Sandwich.

Both of these but particularly Sandwich!

Songlines · 08/02/2026 17:28

Back to say
St Mary's Chronicles - Jodi Taylor
Seven Sisters series - Lucinda Riley
Sarah Waters

drspouse · 08/02/2026 17:29

I just read James in one day (though TBF I was laid up in bed).

"Eleanor Oliphant is completely fine". It's superb 💕

Was just about to say the same thing! I’ve kept it on my kindle so I can read it again!
