I feel crap, on the sofa with a blanket for a quiet day. Need a new book to read but nothing I own is taking my fancy. Would love to get stuck into a page turner i can get on my kindle

A kind friend sent me the first of the Ruth Galloway novels by Ellie Griffiths (thrillers with ongoing relationship through the series) when I was sofa-bound after illness. Very easy to read and definitely page turners. 🙂

Edited

My mum passed me one of those, I went through it like a dose of salts and was looking for more. Then I discovered that the one she gave me was number four in the series, thus spoiling the first three a bit (still a great read though).

Can heartily recommend the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway series, but do start with the first and read in order...

Can recommend Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary, I read it on holiday and like the PP, I hated having to leave it. The Martian is also very gripping. I loved Sarah Waters' The Little Stranger far more than Fingersmith, although it was good.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (although it's about 850 pages so you might need a couple of days).

I loved A Fine Balance by Rohan Mistry even more so because Ive been to India and the book just brings it alive

Puppylucky · 08/02/2026 17:48

Holly by Stephen King was great . It's part of a series but you don't really need to have read the others. It really gripped me.

serialgrannie · 08/02/2026 17:50

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell is the only book I stayed up all night to finish- aged 18 in 1966. More recently Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine and Room were unputdownable for me.

Nanda66 · 08/02/2026 17:51

The Heart’s Invisible Furies

Small pleasures by Clare Chambers...

Loved every bit of this

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 08/02/2026 17:59

Depends on what you like
but I am Pilgrim by Terry Haynes is one book I stayed up till 5 am reading it

it’s a thriller with some really good twist

if you like police type books
then Peter James books are really good
you can read them as stand alone or as a series

The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters had me completely gripped.

I recently read The English Understand Wool in one sitting - fab book - but it is more like a short story.

My elderly uncle was given a copy of Jane Eyre and stayed up through the night to finish it. he called me and said "why didn't anyone tell me what the classics were like before now"

Damn, your uncle finally rumbled the conspiracy to keep the classics secret from him…

The Maeve Kerrigan books by Jane Casey rattle by pleasantly

ThatshallotBaby · 08/02/2026 18:00

What a way to go Bella Mackie and how to kill your family by the same author. Excellent thrillers, well written and engaging. Kind of jealous of people who haven’t read them yet Grin

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 08/02/2026 18:01

Wow thanks all! Some great suggestions, and some I have read already.

I started Then she was gone earlier, read 20% then fell asleep for 3 hours! No reflection on the book. Also downloaded Fingersmith.

@FFSMaureen thank you, feeling decidedly ropey.

All the lonely people by Mike Gayle
Midnight Library by Matt Haig

Fifthtimelucky · 08/02/2026 18:04

The best books I have read recently are:
A Gentleman in Moscow (Amor Towles)
Educated (Tara Westover)
Lessons in Chemistry (Lee Eisenberg) and
The Marriage Portrait ( Maggie O’Farrell).

I am currently re-reading Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell, which I am very much enjoying.

Lillygolightly · 08/02/2026 18:11

Profile K by Helen Fields - this is another I really enjoyed, a real page turner.

Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

Deception Point & Digital Fortress both by Dan Brown - I have re read these more than once.

Cloud Atlas is really good.
I loved A Gentleman In Moscow too.

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell though - I couldn't finish it. It's awful!

Fever Dream by Samanta Schweblin

I picked it up to read a few pages while I was having a cup of tea and couldn’t put it down! It’s a novella so only a couple of hours approx to read, but it was absolutely compulsive. Read nothing about it beforehand if you or anyone wants to read it.

Anything by Sarah Waters.
The Crimson Petal and The White/Under The Skin by Michel Faber.

Completely agree! If I loved these too, what else would you recommend?

I just finished The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue in about 2 days. Really enjoyed it!

The one that always pops to mind when I see these threads is Trust Me by Lesley Pearce.
I couldn’t put it down, gave it to a work colleague when I finished and she said the same.

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.

Agree with this.

I also loved Affinity by the same author - maybe even preferred it.
