I know I’m getting old because ….

I’m watching Star Trek the next generation because I’m off sick from work (long term) and I have started watching old things unused to watch back in the day …. I told myself earlier that I must be getting old because I’m looking at Jean Luc Picard, thinking he’s looking quite foxy … it always used to be the younger men back in the early 1990’s 🤣

anyone found them telling themselves that they’re getting old , and why?

I said to a woman pushing a buggy in Boots today: ‘I think I must be officially old - what a cute baby!’ She did have a lovely sweet face 😄

"oh I am ready for a good sit down"
Said fairly regularly.
My dressing gown being my favourite thing to wear on a Saturday night no more heels and dresses 😆

That made me laugh! We've just been out for dinner and back again. Home by 7.30, straight into pjs and dressing gown for a cuppa and watch a film. I'll probably fall asleep halfway through but at least I'll be ready for bed!

Wait until you get given a copy of the Saga magazine . . .

I prefer Saga to Good Housekeeping by a mile! (I read my mother's copies you understand) 😂

Speaking to a newly qualified member of staff. She was surprised I passed my first degree without internet.

had to explain photocopy cards and actually looking up journals in a library.

I appreciate my health.

Plenty of people I knew didn't get here, or are in recovery from various issues. I am 59.

So agree-same age and i can count at least 6 who aren't here now. All women and all with children.

Gingernaut · 06/02/2026 19:37

I have to explain film quotes to the young'uns

Gotback · 06/02/2026 19:45

Talking Pictures TV & Boom Radio. Bloody brilliant 😂

canuckup · 06/02/2026 19:48

Yes because the fashions that were fashion when I was a teenager are now fashion again. The loop is complete.

It’s annoying though as they all have great skin and hair and make the clothes look good. We wore them with crimped hair, blue or white silver eyeshadow and nude lipstick so looked like transvestite mannequins.

That is such a good description. My DD will be able to fondly on her teenage pictures. Mine are locked in a box.

Buying full knickers because they are comfortable.

I love my full knickers the bigger the better.

Trotula · 06/02/2026 20:17

Losing hair everywhere except chin hairs that sprout overnight at an angle making it impossible to pluck!
Saying “it’ll see me out” when I buy stuff.
When comfort is far more important than style (vest, warm wool socks or tights, cosy cardi, comfy shoes and boots, basically anything warm and practical)
Making sure I have a tissue in my bag, up my sleeve and in that comfy cardi pocket.
werthers toffee in my pocket.
Being offered a seat on the train by someone who was middle aged 😳
Preferring eating lunch out rather than dinner due to indigestion.
Feeling a rage when “youngsters” act as if I’m an IT dinosaur - I’ve been using computers for well over 50 years now so yes you can send me an email thanks 😖
I will stop now must be nearly bed time and I need to take my tablets after I’ve finished my nice cup of mint tea 🤣

CelticSilver · 06/02/2026 20:35

Having a lovely cup of tea (Earl Grey, hot) whilst Capt. Picard reads Shakespeare to me sounds like my idea of a heavenly evening.

I have children in their 20s, the eldest of whom says things like ‘you’ll be dead soon’. I’m 53. 🥴

Tell them 'So will you if you keep saying shit like that...'

😠

I just heard on the radio that the Spice Girls’ debut single was released 30 years ago Confused

The Appleton sisters (All Saints) have a new track out. They are now 50+

That I am sitting on my bed on a Friday night scrolling through Mumsnet.

mazedasamarchhare · 06/02/2026 21:22

Yep easy; I have no more fucks to give, I simply don’t care if people think I’m a complete bellend (years ago I’d sit and stress going back over conversations and inwardly cringing at the slightest faux pas or unintentional misdemeanour), but now i have become unbelievably blunt as tolerance has all but disappeared ….might be dementia creeping in though!

Because 26 years ago was sometime in the 1970s.

It was not the year 2000. Nope. No. Nooooo. (Smh)

Realising that you are old enough to be your colleagues Mum and your trainees Grandma. That was an awful realisation.

Yep. If someone has a cute baby or a handsome dog or I love their perfume, I damn well tell them these days! Life's too short and gruelling to let these pretty moments go by unremarked! 😍

DrCoconut · 06/02/2026 21:50

Realising that many of the teachers at my DS's secondary school were either not yet born or just babies when I was a pupil there.
