Who remembers when Take That split up?

How bad was the hysteria, is it true they had to set up helplines?! I would have been around 10 but was too into Michael Jackson and East 17 to care.

I watched a bit of a documentary earlier seeing people screaming and crying. It was hilarious!

Yes I remember
I wasn't bothered myself but yes I definitely remember the hysteria around it so yes I can believe they set up helplines

Appletree56 · 06/02/2026 17:22

I didn't need to call the helpline but I did dramatically rip all my posters off the wall and spent the evening crying. Hard to say why we were all so upset but I guess girls of that age feel things deeply. Soon moved on to Peter Andre 😂

Yes! I was a huge fan.I called the helpline! And I was 24! Still obsessed

I was inconsolable.

I stayed shut in my room for 3 days, in the dark, crying my eyes out.

I didn't call the helpline but I know some people who did.

Crazy and dramatic times 🤣

Lol oh to be young and starstruck again!

Yep, I remember girls at school being asked to go on Central Weekend Live with Nicky Campbell to talk about it.

SargeMarge · 06/02/2026 17:43

I was volunteering at child line when Westlife broke up and yes, there was hysteria. We had calls for days, but that first day was just constant. We had to have the white boards in the middle of the call room with each of the band member’s names in it and a bunch of facts and info on the band so we could talk about them with the kids who called in.

minisago · 06/02/2026 17:46

I was devastated. And I bloody wrote them a letter to tell them that! I was 13 years old. When Robbie left there was a girl at school who clung to The Sun newspaper all day (with that headline) sobbing constantly. Year 8 that was 🤣

Fingalscave · 06/02/2026 17:46

Yes I remember the press conference and the helpline! I remember the younger people at work were talking about it constantly and the older ones were saying You think this is bad, I remember when The Beatles split up! That was much worse!
Strange times.

RedToothBrush · 06/02/2026 17:47

Yeah it was great. The wailing in the 6th form common room was hilarious.

I was an Oasis fan.

BogRollBOGOF · 06/02/2026 18:13

I remember the coverage on Newsround and the description of a girl "sobbing into her cornflakes" when she saw the news that morning.

I quite liked Take That, but not to that extent.

QueenStevie · 06/02/2026 18:22

Oh yes. It was really dramatic. I was distraught. I didn't phone the helpline though, I just sulked. I blamed (and still do) Robbie and they shouldn't have released How Deep is Your Love as their last single. I felt cheated out of an original Take That song.

I have been to see them so many times since they got back together (never when Robbie was involved though. I won't give him a penny of my money)

Bigtom · 06/02/2026 18:22

My English teacher wore a black armband 😂

LlynTegid · 06/02/2026 18:28

I remember the helplines etc.

Though the tears were nothing compared to those when Diana, Princess of Wales died a year or so later.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/02/2026 18:30

E17?! Loser!

I had only really liked the previous 2 songs so felt like I came late to the party.

PullTheBricksDown · 06/02/2026 18:35

Does the documentary include the bit I remember from the press conference of Gary saying 'Unfortunately, the rumours are true...' 🫣

TheTecknician · 06/02/2026 18:36

No, but I remember when Robbie Williams left the group in 1995. Two of the girls in the office were inconsolable for a day. I thought something dreadful must have happened to them...and then someone told me.

I was never a fan originally but loved the 'foursome' when they got back together without Robbie as I always thought he was a right tool.

I have never seen them live and wouldn't want to give a penny to that idiot either. Gary I think is a genius thoug, love him and the other three. Robbie would be nothing without Gary. The others were so humble and he's just a prick! The Progress wembley concert looked amazing (YouTube) except for the solos that nobhead got given. 😅

ApolloandDaphne · 06/02/2026 18:51

The weeping was mad. I was working in an office and people were inconsolable. I don't really like them at that time and was baffled with the reaction.

MadisonMontgomery · 06/02/2026 18:52

Yes, I was at primary school and I can remember loads of the girls sobbing in the playground when they split up. Honestly, it was like someone had died!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 06/02/2026 18:56

I remember it very well as I worked for Robbie's lawyers. He was in most days for weeks. Exciting times, I shan't lie.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 06/02/2026 18:58

Yep I remember. I wasn't affected by it though as I was an unusual kid and preferred sixties music (still do).

What was the helpline's advice??!

Plump82 · 06/02/2026 19:01

I was 14 and absolutely devastated and I did call the helpline. Absolutely distraught and still blame Robbie. I could have done with the helpline when Jason left and still hope he'll rejoin one day. The Circus tour isn't going to be the same without him as he had so many highlights from the first time round.

KarenWheeler · 06/02/2026 19:03

I do. I’d kinda passed my obsessed with Mark Owen phase at that point, was grown up by then. It was more of a, “oh that’s a bit sad” passing thought.
