What would you think if you saw someone with a black eye

Hello, I got hit by a car this week while riding my bike. I’m incredibly lucky to have walked away from it with just some scrapes and bruises on my legs and a very swollen cut and bruised face, eye and cheek.

I’ve been hibernating at home for a couple of days but have had to venture out today and felt a bit like everyone was staring at me, which may well have been in my head!

So, what would your first thoughts be if you saw someone at the school gates or the supermarket with a bad black eye? Would you judge them? Assume they got in a fight? Or barely think anything of it?

If they look like a mum of young children I'd assume accidental toddler headbut. I've had it happen to me more than once.

A lady at work did ask me quietly if everything was OK though.

I do actually have a 1 year old who thinks head butting me is very funny! It’s proving a bit of a nightmare trying to stop her from injuring me further 😅

My first thought would be , omg did that happen while they were opening a bottle of wine???? Ask me how I know how…. And yes, it happened exactly as you are imagining it.

Haha, I got an absolute shiner from a prosecco cork once. Entirely my own fault. However DP was worried people would think he'd hit me.

And to be fair, I agree with posts above, ina woman my first thought would be dv.

To be fair, I could absolutely imagine that happening to me!!

Thanks everyone, I also have grazes down my cheek, a glued cut above my eye and bruises all the way down to my chin on one side, so hopefully it doesn’t look just like a punch!

I certainly look like I’ve been in the wars though.

Nothing as would have other things on my mind.

TinselTurnip · 06/02/2026 15:55

I wouldn't think much of it tbh, I once gave myself a black eye when the pendant on my necklace got stuck in my jumper as I was taking it off and then sprang back and hit me in the eye 😳

Coatsoff42 · 06/02/2026 15:58

With a lot of grazes and other bruises, yes I’d only think you’ve had a fall or a car crash. Just a black eye on a woman I would worry it was DV and be wondering if they were OK. If it was a man I’d assume sports probably.

If people are looking at you, it’s just really unusual to see injured faces, we all live very safe lives.

Tryagain26 · 06/02/2026 15:59

I'd think oh dear that person looks as though they have had an accident. Why would anyone be judgemental?

I showed up with a black eye in the first week of a new job. Like something out of a cartoon. My three year old came in hard for a hug when I was in bed. Only people clearly didn’t believe me and kept shuffling and making terribly well-meaning comments about if there was ever anything I wanted to talk about…

Toddlerteaplease · 06/02/2026 16:39

I’d assume they’d been hit.

TheMorgenmuffel · 06/02/2026 16:40

I'd assume they'd been in an accident or perhaps a fight.

elastamum · 06/02/2026 16:46

I would assume an accident, but I keep horses so these sorts of injuries are an occupational hazard. I would tell a couple of people what happened and they will be horrified and probably tell everyone else!

verabarbleen · 06/02/2026 16:48

You poor thing. My older brother gave my mum a black eye with a spanner when he was a toddler. God knows why he had a spanner but this was 1983 😂

HeadyLamarr · 06/02/2026 16:52

I always assume car accident.

cantankerousoldcrone · 06/02/2026 17:23

I got a black eye falling off my bike, so I'd just think, wonder how they got that l, but in a casual kind of way.

zurigo · 06/02/2026 17:31

I would assume you'd had an accident (and hope it wasn't DV).

Whiskeyandkittens · 06/02/2026 17:32

I've got a black eye at the moment, I was lying in bed reading something on my phone (probably Mumsnet, take note - it's dangerous!) and dropped my phone on my face. No-one has noticed even though it's going lovely shades of yellow and purple now!

loriat · 06/02/2026 17:56

The only time I ever had a black eye was after a medical procedure on my nose. So now whenever I see anyone with a black eye, I think ‘I wonder if they had a medical procedure on their nose’. I realise I may be alone in this!

AzureRose · 06/02/2026 17:57

Nothing. It could be anything and most likely an accident.

Hollyhobbi · 06/02/2026 17:58

I fell on holidays last year and ended up with two black eyes. I wore sunglasses for 3 weeks! I'm on a high dose of warfarin so the bruising was spectacular!

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/02/2026 17:58

Tbh if I knew they were a cyclist I'd assume they'd been in an accident cycling. The only two people I know who cycle regularly are always rocking up with injuries.

ChristmasCwtch · 06/02/2026 18:02

I’ve got two small bruises next to my left eye. It’s from my Botox appt.

Not one person at work has enquired 😂

itsthetea · 06/02/2026 18:03

I’d probably think that looks sore

My aunt had a medical procedure near her eye and got a lovely shiner, so I also would wonder if it's that (or an accident)

Songlines · 06/02/2026 18:45

I face planted a radiator just before Christmas, fell over my own feet. Cracking black eye and cut below my eye. A couple of people checked in, in a very gentle way, and I was very appreciative that they did
