Angela Raynor being talked about as possible leader? Surely not.

Ozgirl76 · 06/02/2026 07:12

I get the point of Raynor - she’s the modern Prescott, the “Everyman”, the one who the trad Labour voters might identify with, with the vaping, clubbing and tax evasion.

But as a leader on the world stage? Have we learnt nothing from Boris? Having a deeply unserious leader is surely not what the U.K. needs now, in this time of global turmoil?

Honestly if she becomes leader the U.K. will be an absolute laughing stock.

I'm no fan of Rayner but my God, I had no idea Northerners were hated so much. According to MN her Northerners makes her seem "common and unintelligent". I'm stunned!.
Starmer has been far too trusting with Mandelson but if he did ask for Mandelson to be fully vetted then I do think some accountability lies with the intelligence agencies that approved him.
I used to think Starmer was quite a decent man, however I was really disappointed in him last week when Andy Burnham was blocked from standing in the Gorton by election. You've got to suspect Starmer had a hand in that.

What I don't understand is why so many conservatives, and men, have had similar investigations and NOT had to step down. Did she do the right thing, no. Is she the first to do this, also no. Is everyone who does it treated fairly. Absolutely not.

What about the men that have had to step down? Why are you ignoring those? Were you concerned about unfairness in their cases?

dottiehens · 06/02/2026 09:19

Apparently being a woman, working class and Northerner gets her a free pass for being a cheating liar. This country is doomed.

I remember following it and Streeting defended her in the media rounds. Subsequently the issue with the agents came out, and trying to blame them. She probably lost anyone willing to do media round defence which made her staying not possible.

Who knows, she might be cleared and bounce in with a bid to remove Starmer. She’s definitely got some loyal party MPs and members behind her.

Superhansrantowindsor · 06/02/2026 09:20

I’m a northern working class woman and I think she’s a disgrace.

friskybivalves · 06/02/2026 09:20

Loving the number of people criticising Rayner’s competence who can’t even spell her name correctly.

PacificState · 06/02/2026 09:21

I’m so torn about this, as a Labour member who will definitely vote in any leadership election. I’m a big fan of Wes, although I’m not sure he’s ready to be PM, and until a week ago I would have ticked his box without a second thought.

But I am so fucking furious about Mandelson, and all those fucking men who decided that the Epstein stuff didn’t matter. I don’t like Rayner (and think she would be an election-loser), Mahmood isn’t ready, Lucy Powell is a party apparatchik not a leader. But the boys’ club in Labour has to be utterly destroyed. They make every decision on the basis of protecting their sex and fuck the consequences, so I’m going to do the same.

Well she's going to get press approval because she's pro apartheid and the media are owned by people who don't have UK values

The whole of this doesn't make sense tbh. Pro-apartheid?!
The press will be haranguing her from day one of even showing an interest in being the leader.

StressedLP1 · 06/02/2026 09:23

She’s not electable.

I say this as a fellow northern single parent Labour voter.

The reality is misogyny and that most of the country leans further to the right.

Dishonest, self-serving politicians twist the truth and then play the victim. Won’t anyone think of the poor duplicitous and unprincipled public servants bravely enduring accountability? And HOW unfair if they get to experience the consequences just cos some other politician didn't. It's not fair they cry. Why should I be held accountable and not them.

Pitiful.

theresnolimits · 06/02/2026 09:24

It’s laughable to think that AR will magically win back the vote of the working class - that’s going to Reform in the next election. Labour’s only hope is to sway the dithering middle class and the vote in the cities. They do that by being serious and investing.

I like Wes Streeting but he may not even survive at the next election as he has a tiny majority; I also think the homophobes will come knocking and I’d rather he avoided it for his own sanity.

I see Shabana Mahmood (sp?) as a possible candidate - she seems fearless and hasn’t had time to muck it up.

But I would be sorry to see Keir go - he does need better advisors though and to be more positive. After the scandals of the Tories, I now have low expectations for the morality of many MPs. But the press are out to get him and, as Boris knows, once the herd turns …

I feel the same about Mandelson, Epstein, Starmer and anyone tied to it and all the I don’t remember, he lied to me utter garbage from men. I like Kemi already, I’m fine with another woman in the dispatch box facing her.

Streeting has gone massively out on a limb with his natural supporters to meet sex-realist feminists halfway. There’s no perfect political position on that issue; the job of a cabinet minister is to try to find the compromise position that maintains safety and dignity for the greatest number of people in the fairest way. I think he’s done absolutely brilliantly on it - it’s one of the big reasons I’m a fan of his.

I disagree. It’s a matter of respect for anyone that you spell their name right, and if you’re having a go at someone for being incompetent, at least start from a position of basic accuracy.

Yes

I think she would be a breath of fresh air. So tired of the boys' club just voting for their own mates and covering up for their crimes. All the posh, polished Eton man-babies have done nothing but make each other richer. Reading all this patronising prejudice vitriol is making me want to vote for her more.

I think the hate for Angela Rayner (and Rachel Reeves) is misogyny and a storm whipped up by the right wing press. I know you are going to say - disgusting tax evasion because the above but what she had was a complicated housing situation because divorce and disabled child. What she did was be inconsistent/ untruthful about which was her primary residence.

Yes I do think she should have known better than to do that but I don't think it makes her uniquely awful.

It is a shame as I think Labour have been really bad at promoting women and this is what happens when they do.

It was actually very clear on Gov.UK, even to a layman like me, that she should have paid the higher rate.
