What order do your lasagne layers go in?

I am just about to make a chicken and veg lasagne - my first lasagne in years - and I can't remember for the life of me what order I used to do the layers in. (I used to cook a lot but have kind of lost my confidence with it lately, as this thread demonstrates!)

I am thinking - meat and veg/pasta/white sauce/meat and veg/pasta/white sauce (+cheese on top).

Does this sound ok?. Or do some of you use a pasta "floor"? If so what are the risks/rewards of this?

I know I could ask A I, but I trust Mumsnet more!

I am still in shock from discovering that English make lasagne with white sauce. Lasagne bechamel should have nutmeg in it and Parmesan should be sprinkled over each bechamel layer.

I thought white sauce was just what some people called bechamel? I think most people out nutmeg in it?

However, I have never heard of a chicken and vegetable version, and I wish I still hadn’t!

I always put a layer of bechamel sauce in the dish first so that the pasta doesn't stick and the lasagna comes out easily: So my order is sauce/pasta/ragu/sauce/pasta/ragu/pasta/sauce/parmesan.

Traditionally the lasagna should be green, but you can't get it here, so sometimes I add spinach to the layers if you want more veg. It's lovely and adds more liquid to the layers when using dry pasta. I also only use dry egg lasagna, or fresh.

You definitely used to be able to. My mum used to make it with the green sheets, but I think it must have gone out of fashion after the 90s!

I do bolognaise, pasta, cheese sauce, cheese, bolognaise, pasta, cheese sauce, cheese.

Of course it is, the point is that in lasagne it needs to have nutmeg in it and Parmesan shaved over otherwise you’re just eating mince with white sauce and a bit of pasta.

But we say just “white sauce” but mean “white sauce with nutmeg etc etc” - not just plain unseasoned flour and milk. It’s just the wording.

I always drop the nutmeg in it while grating it. I think I’ve not dropped it about twice ever.

Massive thanks to everyone who has responded - to me this is what I love about Mumsnet - so many people being kind enough to take a few minutes out of their day to help out a stranger!

And it's also nice to get so many different lasagne ideas. I didn't include spinach, but it's one of the vegetables I actually like, so will definitely do so next time! (If there is a next time - I suppose I had better wait and see how it turns out).

Oh, and I went for both kinds of cheese in the end - a bit of parmesan in the bechamel and a sprinkling of cheddar on top! To be fair, I am not calorie counting so much as trying to eat a wider range of vegetables, so it made sense at the time (plus I do love cheese!)

Some do some don’t, ditto parmesan.
