I have been ill since the start of December, diahrea stomach pains (althought not awful) and general tiredness dizziness etc.

Saw doctor multiple times eventually ended up in hospital for a week because I was so dehydrated and I had lost 26 pounds.

they did all kinds of tests the only one that came back abnormal was the stool test for calprotectin which was 1100 but they found nothing else. I had an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy that found barrats esophagus but nothing that would explain the stomach issues.

its been nearly two weeks since I was discharged and I’m still so miserable today was so awful I had stomach pain all day although nothing diahrea but then this evening again been stuck on the toilet . I’m so tired I’m just bascially managing to cook and eat then lie in bed all day! I’ve tried immodium etc that makes it way worse as then I just get really bad pain.

I messaged the doctor last week asking for more help but they could only offer me a review appointment this Friday.

what the hell can I do! Has anyone had this before the hospital discharged me and the gp doesn’t really seem to be that worried but I’m going crazy!

You need a full colonoscopy not just a sigmoidoscopy. A calprotectin that high along with your symptoms sounds exactly like chrons which is often see further up.

They absolutely need to be exploring this as inflammatory bowel disease. 1100 is very high for calprotectin. Mine was only 250 and with some worrying blood results, I went straight to urgent gastro referral and colonoscopy. It’s good they have done the elastase test. That screens for pancreatic insufficiency. It’s a good thing to rule out and is an easily treatable and non-life threatening condition if that’s what it turns out to be (it’s what I have). I think your calprotectin would be unlikely to be that high with pancreatic insufficiency.

Personally, I would push back on further explorations for IBD and also ask about a CT scan if they are worried about cancer or similar. It will give an overall picture of the structure of your abdomen and pelvis. I had that along with my colonoscopy.

maybe if it comes back high again they will look into something like this. Although I’m hoping it’s not going to be high as I just want it to go away!

the notes he made said

This is probably abdominal symptoms secondray to multiple factors: recent hospital admission, increase PPI, and the stress that may be realted to it even thought (my name) feels she is not stress, she is sometimes almost tearful during the consultation

so it doesn’t sound like the are really looking for anything else though

My brother had exactly the same symptoms as you and his chrons was found right up by the small bowel. This is why you need to push for a full colonoscopy asap.

Hi OP, I really think based on the results you posted you could have slipped through the cracks during a busy handover. Your results show a red flag for IBD, could be Crohn's etc, and the recommendation is clearly to investigate if you have symptoms but someone hasn't drawn the link between the symptoms you've been having and the results.

I'd ask your GP to ask for a referral back to the gastro team at the hospital for outpatient follow up, possibly inpatient if things are getting really unmanageable for you. Your GP is not an expert and this appt will be papering over the cracks in the hospital failings so you might not get much out of it specifically, but you could use the time to ask about any advice on how to manage your symptoms in the meantime, making sure you have a PPI prescription, asking about suitable meal replacement drinks if you are still losing weight rapidly and what you need to look out for as red flags that things you should go to A+E for such as palpitations.

Best of luck and hoping you feel better soon.

Lots of coeliac tests come back negative it just means the bowel is not quite damaged enough I’d really stop wheat barley rye and full gluten free diet for 2 weeks see if that makes a difference There are lots of ceoliacs who say yes my test was negative but when I cut out gluten completely I got better!
