I have been ill since the start of December, diahrea stomach pains (althought not awful) and general tiredness dizziness etc.

Saw doctor multiple times eventually ended up in hospital for a week because I was so dehydrated and I had lost 26 pounds.

they did all kinds of tests the only one that came back abnormal was the stool test for calprotectin which was 1100 but they found nothing else. I had an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy that found barrats esophagus but nothing that would explain the stomach issues.

its been nearly two weeks since I was discharged and I’m still so miserable today was so awful I had stomach pain all day although nothing diahrea but then this evening again been stuck on the toilet . I’m so tired I’m just bascially managing to cook and eat then lie in bed all day! I’ve tried immodium etc that makes it way worse as then I just get really bad pain.

I messaged the doctor last week asking for more help but they could only offer me a review appointment this Friday.

what the hell can I do! Has anyone had this before the hospital discharged me and the gp doesn’t really seem to be that worried but I’m going crazy!

You definitely need a gastro referral and a colonoscopy. There is medication available for colitis. I found it took 18 months to clear the inflammation with a combination of low fodmap diet, some supplements and probiotics.

newornotnew · 04/02/2026 07:06

What does calprotectin 1100 indicate or suggest - what did the GP say about that?

Grumpypumpy · 04/02/2026 07:14

Diverticulaer? Try Symprove. It’s a probiotic.

Did they check for parasites and water borne diseases? DC were ill after coming back from a camping trip with Scouts. They'd got Giardia which our GP was astonished by. She thought it could only be caught in 3rd world.

I worked somewhere in UK recently where we were put up on site, and there was legionella in the water. It's worth ruling these out.

Also if you have been ill and had anything like Covid or flu it can upset the balance of your stomach and cause new allergies. Could be lactose allergy or IBS?

I’m not sure exactly what they checked for they just said they ruled out infections but nothing sure which ones exactly!

Bile acid malabsorption has to be tested via a Sehcat test involving you swallowing a radioactive capsule. Do you have a gall bladder? Any issues with gall stones?

I do have my gallbladder I know I have Small gallstones from a ct scan I had a year ago (I had appendicitis!) but they said they are not causing problems .

Have you had a colonoscopy? Sounds like a diverticular flare.

I had a sigmoidoscopy but not a colonoscopy not sure how different those are!

He didn’t say anything . They did two tests at the hospital a week apart the first was 700 the second over a thousand but they didn’t seem too bothered tbh!

But did they do biopsies when they did the endoscopy? I had negative antibody test for years only diagnosed via biopsies and genetic test. I ended up in hospital once after losing weight and dehydrated while pregnant, thought I was dying but just undiagnosed coeliac disease. Other than that I think it sounds like inflammatory bowel disease, might need a full colonoscopy to diagnose again with biopsies rather than sigmoidoscopy

Yes they did biopsies but I don’t know the results yet.

Have you tried an elimination diet. I had very similar symptoms so my GP suggested this. I had to fast for 24 hours, drinking plain water only. Then slowly introduce food groups back into my diet. I very quickly found out it was dairy causing me problems.

As you’ve been diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus, I hope you are permanently on omeprazole or one of the other proton pump inhibitors? If you are, do make sure you take magnesium glycinate, vitamin d, vitamin c, zinc and iron.

Yes I have been on lanzoprozole for a couple of years I had an ulcer and esophagitis I’ve been on it since then . They have doubled the dose for 4 weeks then it goes back down.

Have they ruled out Diverticulitis? My Mum has it, and it can be awful. Stomach pains, diarrhea, tiredness etc. My Mum's was picked up from a colonoscopy.

I don't know how old you are, but when I'd been taking HRT (tablet and gel) for 6 months, I suddenly got unexplained diarrhea, stomach cramps and feeling generally awful. It turned out that I am sensitive to progesterone. As soon as I stopped taking HRT, my symptoms completely disappeared.

ZenZazie · 04/02/2026 08:45

Came on to mention Pepto Bismol as well. If it helps significantly, it’s a strong indication that you have Hydrogen Sulfide SIBO. It’s a post infectious gut condition that has diarrhea and swift, significant weight loss as symptoms.

That said, with those Calprotectin levels they should be investigating for IBD/Crohn’s urgently.

Andtheworldwentwhite · 04/02/2026 08:48

I was tested for celiac disease and they said I was fine. I’m not. I don’t eat wheat or dairy and my symptoms went away.

Giddykiddy · 04/02/2026 08:48

You poor thing - i had escalating bouts of diarrhoea for years which really affected my quality of life and caused constant anxiety - my pharmacist recommended Alforex probiotic which she said was life changing for many including herself. Within a couple of weeks I developed normal toilet functions

Edited

I’m 42 the didn’t mention diverticulitis so I’m not sure at all if they looked at it - I am taking some medications but nothing new before this started so I’m not sure!

@Ihavenoideawhatmybodydoesa sigmoidoscopy examines the lower third of the bowel and the rectum. A colonoscopy examines the lower and upper parts. I would push for a colonoscopy.

I figured out how to log in to the hospital portal where you can see results but the result I can see is this one I’m not sure what else they tested for tbh or really what it even means they just didn’t seem concerned but they were desperate for beds - each morning I’d be kicked out of my bed and put in a chair so that someone who needed oxygen or who couldn’t move could have the bed . Then by night I’d be found another bed somewhere in the hospital so each day saw a totally different set of doctors.

You can have microscopic colitis which is why they take biopsies. I’d bet money on one of your samples coming back with this.

justsoveryodd · 04/02/2026 09:49

Gastro issues are one of the worst to diagnose. You can get consultants telling you it's in your head and anxiety is making it worse and then it's so easy to use the IBS label.

Yeah I actually managed to see the gp today instead of in a few days and I have no idea how to feel about it. He ordered another calprotcin test and another one called elastase? But he also was obsessed with an I under stress and he even wrote in the notes that I was tearful (I was not)

This clearly says IBD possible
and
urgent referral if symptoms suggest IBD

Id ask your GP about this

He’s falsifying his notes
I’d complain and ask for that to be removed
and
because I’m so untrusting of the nhs these days
turn your phone on to record appointments
It will also help you afterwards to go over what’s been said

ParkingNightmares · 04/02/2026 19:12

Have you had your b12 checked? PPI's can affect absorption of b12 and make you very poorly. As your D and Folate are low i'd suspect this is too. Can cause a myriad of issues including liver and gastro.

Fuckitydoodah · 04/02/2026 19:13

I'd be bloody tearful if I'd had diarrhoea and stomach pains for as long as you have.

My mum has diverticulitis and a flare up is similar to what you're experiencing.

I'm surprised they haven't given you a colonoscopy.

ThumbTowers · 04/02/2026 19:41

This very much describes the symptoms of a family member who felt so weak, sick and had stomach pains for months and months, could not eat much. Endoscopy, colonoscopy, blood tests etc. In the end it was ecoli. Likely caught on a holiday several months before the first symptom even presented in full force. She'd even asked for a test for parasites but this one was neglected for some reason. Anyway, you are probably going to get loads of theories thrown at you but here's another one!
