Frozen apple slices

But where can you buy them?!?! I have searched Food Warehouse, Tesco, Asda etc. To no avail.🤷‍♀️

PlantsAndSpaniels · 02/02/2026 07:57

I make double/triple when I can be bothered and freeze it so I can make one quickly when I fancy one. Also use melted butter to make the crumble mix instead of rubbing it together.

M&S and Waitrose definitely stock them.

Tallestone · 02/02/2026 10:00

I never peel the apples they don't taste any different.

MikeRafone · 02/02/2026 10:01

I don’t peel apples or potatoes, if I’m making mash or crumble

MikeRafone · 02/02/2026 10:04

Tinned apples vary considerably in ingredients

Sainsbury own are 99% apple but some tinned sliced apples have a multitude of other ingredients added

i make apple & cinnamon oats in the slow cooker and use tinned sliced apples, as that’s the recipe - but checking the ingredients found a great difference

I also keep a bag of frozen pepper in the freezer, it’s cheaper and less wasteful than fresh

I never peel my apples for crumble.
I got a D in Home Ec at school for it but I don't care.

😂

PluckyChancer · 02/02/2026 10:08

No need to peel apples for a crumble. The skin provides extra fibre which is good for you but it cooks down and you don’t actually taste it.

If they’re your own apples, (presumably you don’t spray them with insecticides?), I just give them a rinse before chopping them up. I have a few apple trees and tend to use whatever I’ve picked and saved. Usually a mix of cookers and sweeter eating varieties.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 02/02/2026 10:08

I never bother peeling them! Complete waste of time and effort IMO. And I make a lot of apple crumbles.

I just cut into quarters, take out the core, cut into eighths and then halve those crosswise, cook them down with a very little water until they’re just starting to soften, and then bung them in the dish.

FurForksSake · 02/02/2026 10:08

Frozen pepper in apple crumble would be disgusting. 🤮 🤣

I always use cooking apples with a little sugar and cornflour. I don’t think they would work unpeeled.

Why add cornflour? Won’t that make them taste gloopy?

Definitely no need to peel them beforehand. Try it and you might surprise yourself. 😁

PistachioTiramisu · 02/02/2026 10:12

Waitrose definitely do frozen Bramley apple slices - I've used them and they are very good.

Waitrose also do a wonderful Tarte Tatin - made in France - and only simple ingredients - no additives or preservatives. Thoroughly recommend.

FurForksSake · 02/02/2026 10:14

@PluckyChancer I don’t add any water or precook and it just makes the cooking apples a bit more together somehow. Definitely not gloopy. It’s a similar way to how Americans make an apple pie filling.

Brefugee · 02/02/2026 10:15

I never peel apples when i make a crumble.

MyBestThing · 02/02/2026 10:22

My tip for crumble is to make a large quantity of crumble mixture and keep in a bag in the freezer. It doesn't freeze solid, you can just pour the frozen mix into fruit and bake. This was a Nancy Birtwhistle tip.

Nannyfannybanny · 02/02/2026 10:25

I don't have any fancy gadgets..I always make a lot of crumble mix in one go,I also add oats. It doesn't take any longer to make a batch for 4 or 8 crumbles. Ready made mix goes in the fridge, I mix in the oats just before cooking.Takes seconds to peel an apple.i usually bake 4 together, different fruit, mostly home grown. My adult kids love them. Cherries are a faff,we do have 2 trees, but you need to de stone them. Late mil didn't!!!

raspberets · 02/02/2026 10:25

Did you end up with an apple crumble OP? Or a mixed tangerine/strawberry/apricot/meat one?

FurForksSake · 02/02/2026 10:32

I always pack down my crumble quite firmly so you get a slightly short bread like crumble at the edges. And then cook it low and slow. I have half a crumble in the fridge for dinner tonight.

i add oats too, and chopped nuts.

Mumofoneandone · 02/02/2026 10:50

You can get a device from Lakeland that feels, chops and cores the apples. Game changer..

HappyFace2025 · 02/02/2026 10:53

Waitrose frozen apples slices are your friend.

MimiGC · 02/02/2026 11:06

In the time it’s taken for you to read these replies, you could have peeled 2-3 apples and have the delicious crumble in the oven!

JamesClyman · 02/02/2026 12:34

Dried apples soaked over-night.

Campbellcarrotsoup · 02/02/2026 15:07
