I’ll use apple in a tin for the first time !! Probably been done to death but what other short cut did you take and got a good result with ??

I always leave the skin on. Makes no difference to the flavour. And probably better for you.

drspouse · 01/02/2026 21:50

I never peel my apples for crumble.
I got a D in Home Ec at school for it but I don't care.

DoorOpening · 01/02/2026 21:57

There is an excellent gadget that peels, cores and slices apples! It’s my favourite kitchen gadget. It’s fun to use and looks like a medieval torture instrument.
Voila!

ChoccyHobknob · 01/02/2026 21:59

I tend to leave the skins on - we have apple trees and produce a ton of apples and my life is too short to peel!

My MIL gave me tinned apples "because" apple crumble is DH's fave (🤣) and I confess I used once because we had people for dinner and I didn't have a dessert big enough for 6! So I mixed with frozen plums for crumble.

Other shortcuts... when young i made a lasagne with tomato soup as I had no tomatoes. Worked quite well!

Shop bought pastry has its place!

Pre rolled icing is a bloody life saver for Christmas cakes.

Pre prepped frozen cooking apples from Waitrose. Make crumble topping using butter melted in microwave and just stir in oats, flour and sugar. Can be done in 5 mins.

InfoSecInTheCity · 01/02/2026 22:00

This is why I have my freezer bags. Whenever a piece of fruit is approaching the end of its best it gets peeled chopped and put in the fruit bag in the freezer. Then whenever I fancy a crumble, pie, compote or smoothie there’s a bag of prepped fruit ready to go. I also double or triple crumble, cookie and pastry recipes when I make them and freeze the extra. If I suddenly get an overwhelming need for a fruit crumble I can assemble one from the freezer in a minute and bung it in the oven. If you make cookie dough you can freeze it in balls and cook them from frozen in less than 10 minutes in small batches.

Tinned pears are great for a crumble!

MrsCarson · 01/02/2026 22:14

I did a crumble today, tin of apples from Asda and some frozen raspberries, it was delicious. I used to do it with cooking apples but they cost too much compared to the tin and life is too short.

Astra53 · 01/02/2026 22:17

I bought one of these. Just be very sure to wind the blade around the back before removing the peeled apple. The first time I used it we ended up with apple and thumb stewed apple.....

I tried tinned apples once but they were horrible. No flavour at all.
You can make crumble with any fruit though. I used whatever is in the freezer. Tinned peaches is actually better than tinned apples imo

@InfoSecInTheCity I do the same. I literally do experience an overwhelming need to make a crumble, it’s a proper craving. My family find it amusing :-).

I think it’s because my Mum made lots of crumbles so it’s a childhood comfort food.

As are peaches 😋

MarxistMags · 02/02/2026 00:43

I'm the same, I have used tinned apples for years now. And tinned rhubarb. Both reasonably priced.
I really do like crumble. And apple sponge, Eves Pudding.

Allswellthatendswelll · 02/02/2026 00:44

Are cooking apples in season in January?

I'd go frozen all the way and maybe add a mix of fruits!

maudelovesharold · 02/02/2026 00:47

As a shortcut, as well as tinned apples, I might this evening occasionally have used a packet of Aunt Bessie’s crumble mix Blush
Still tasted lovely though, with my additions of raisins, cinnamon, and a little sugar, with some desiccated coconut mixed into the crumble topping!

MrMischief · 02/02/2026 03:45

Tinned peaches dotted with frozen raspberry crumble is amazing. We add maple syrup to the crumble mix.

I have never tried apple crumble without peeling apples and think this is the sort of info that will lead to my expanding waist line as now there is nothing stopping me making more apple crumbles.

Gorgeouslygorgeous · 02/02/2026 03:49

I like the frozen forest fruits in a crumble.

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 02/02/2026 03:55

People laugh at my lazy crumble recipe but hear me out.....

Chop an unpeeled apple, stick it in the microwave for 1 minute. Add a sprinkle of sugar and cinnamon if you want. Top with granola or muesli......I have this for my breakfast all the time and it's fab. Tastes just like a crumble. And yes. I have added custard.

GoldenishFish · 02/02/2026 06:40

I don't peel the apples, couldn't be bothered tbh

Love this! I need to try it

They aren't fresh off the trees but they store really well in a cold store.

Moulez · 02/02/2026 07:00

Gross apples in a tin. I mean, how lazy are you?

Pentalagon · 02/02/2026 07:04

I bought an apple peeler, corer and slicer in France. Makes short work of the job. I freeze a few bags of apples that friends give me in October and I’m always prepared for a carving crisis.

ApplesAreAmazing · 02/02/2026 07:32

I normally use unpeeled dessert apples as naturally sweet rather than cooking apples. I leave the skin on as I don't notice it, and the skin contains most of the vitamins, and lots of fibre. I cut up windfalls in the autumn into pie sized bags and freeze them. I also freeze crumble mix in a box and then just make a crumble straight from the freezer. I make a healthy crumble mix with low sugar, added sunflower and pumpkin seeds and I use organic oats and wholemeal flour.

Tinned cherry crumble 😋
