🤣

I've made it with skin on apples and didn't notice any difference😂

CountryGirlInTheCity · 01/02/2026 21:14

If you can live with it being a different kind of fruit than apple, use frozen fruit (I don’t think you can get frozen apple but I may be wrong). I keep bags of frozen mixed berries in the freezer, tip some into a dish, leave to defrost a bit, pop on some sugar and crumble topping and it’s ready for the oven. When I make crumble topping I also make loads and keep it in the freezer. It stays free-flowing so you just tip on what you want and put the rest back in the freezer.

RosesAndHellebores · 01/02/2026 21:15

If using tinned fruit, plums work better than apples.

GipsyandIvy · 01/02/2026 21:16

I never peel apples for a crumble.

DeltaVariant · 01/02/2026 21:17

Leave the skin on lol.

Tiptopflipflop · 01/02/2026 21:19

I just leave the skins on. Just as nice and better for you.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/02/2026 21:21

I don’t peel the apples.
Tinned apple is rank.

Firsttimemom3 · 01/02/2026 21:22

mmh not sure about the skins ! I just saw that you can buy frozen apples at Waitrose and marks and Spencer !

I made a crumble, peeling the apples is slightly less annoying than rubbing the butter and flour Roger. I use a pastry blender and that helps with the crumble.

daisychain01 · 01/02/2026 21:27

Waitrose do a delicious Danish apple tart, with big chunky whole pieces of apple - nice with either crème fraiche or natural Greek yoghurt.

Or they do an apple crumble, which is also delishhhhh.

FolioQuarto · 01/02/2026 21:30

I devote one half day each late August to peeling and chopping cooking apples. Then I freeze loads of boxes ready for crumbles all year.

hexsnidgett · 01/02/2026 21:32

Frozen cherries make lovely crumble.
I find tinned apples have lost a lot of flavour, so will need some lemon juice, cinnamon or blackberries. They do work well in cakes though.

Morrisons is your friend.

I always leave the skins on, I think it adds extra flavor. I also love a blueberry crumble using frozen blueberries. Cherries sound yummy @hexsnidgett , I’m going to try them.

I’m slightly obsessed with crumbles as a winter pudding, my family laugh at me as I get sudden urges to make them. 😋

FurForksSake · 01/02/2026 21:38

So are people using unpeeled cooking apples?

Chasingsquirrels · 01/02/2026 21:41

Apricot crumble using tinned apricot halves is very quick and really nice.

I make my crumble with about 70% oats and 30% flour, sugar and melted butter - just mix together and no rubbing in needed.
I used to do it 50/50 in the food processor, but the oats just got blitzed.

Similar to a PP I have loads of frozen fruit from last autumn, prepared and then frozen on trays and bagged up.

@FurForksSake Personally I prefer eating apples as they’re naturally sweeter. I’m using Honeycrisps atm.

My parents had apple trees so we used peeled cooking apples growing up.

I do the same, we get a huge windfall of apples and pears from Pil about that time. I stew the lot with cinnamon and a vanilla pod (no sugar) and freeze, crumble, pies, on top of breakfast porridge or muesli, apple pin wheels, we're starting to run out at this point in the year.

FurForksSake · 01/02/2026 21:43

I always use cooking apples with a little sugar and cornflour. I don’t think they would work unpeeled.

Blueuggboots · 01/02/2026 21:44

tinned crushed pineapple crumble with evaporated milk is the food of the gods.

DontMonkeyWithMyBusiness · 01/02/2026 21:44

Delia Smith said you don't need to peel apples and that's good enough for me.
