More and more i don't want to go out

Im F and 54. DH & DC

More and more I don't want to go out. Happy to go to friends/family houses - or them to mine - and the local pub occasionally, but other than that i'm just happy at home. I'll travel to go on holiday. I have to go to the office twice a week, which I dread.

There is always so much going on at home. This weekend for example ... the dc each had private tutors at home. I had a load of washing to do. We planned and booked our holiday, which took several hours. A food shop turned up.
I baked. We sorted out some plans for later this year. My PT came over. DC needed lifts .. and then it was sunday evening and I still haven't done everything I need to do.

Should I be worried but I don't want to go out as much ? Im leaving the house less and less lately

I think it's fine you don't want to go out. I feel that same way

Stickytoffeetartt · 01/02/2026 17:33

Same. I feel relaxed and happy at home 🏡 Hate having to go out tbh. I also wfh which is ideal. If I have plans at the weekend I feel that it's a waste of my weekend 😅

This, totally !
Weekend plans mean I've not had a weekend . There is talk of a weekend away with my friends.... i'm dreading it and i'll need to take monday and tuesday off work for my 'weekend time'. Not going is not an option unfortunately.

Also 54. Adult DC left home over 7yrs ago. Live alone with dog and a turtle. Can't work atm due to disabilities and injuries.

I can go weeks and weeks without leaving the house or seeing anyone apart from supermarket delivery people or the dog walker. I'd be happy to pull the duvet over my head and never get out again apart from the odd forage for crisps!

46 yo, long term happily married, same regarding the staying at home.
No problem!

This thread will quickly fill up with people saying they also hate leaving the house. It’s a mn thing.

Personally I absolutely hate not leaving the house. I need to go out and be In the world every day. I’m 58.

But, to quote the old mn trope, you do you.

bloomchamp · 01/02/2026 18:14

I’d hate to stay in all weekend. I get cabin fever by Thursday. I work from home Monday and Wednesday. Tuesdays I’m trying to keep up with housework etc. Fridays i look after my grandchildren. The weekends I’m out and about. Dh and I travelled to the Yorkshire dales this Saturday for a drive then a nice lunch out. Today I’ve been out shopping with my dd. I’m always a bit sad come Sunday evening x

Me too. I'm 52.

I've had a rare day at home all day and I'm bored. Much prefer doing stuff.
Like going to work too! 50F

scrivette · 01/02/2026 18:25

I rarely want to go out at the weekends or go into the office once a week, but when I do it’s not so bad, it’s the thought of going that puts me off.

I do like having a whole day at home at the weekend but it rarely happens with three DC.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/02/2026 18:28

It would be my worst nightmare! I hate staying at home.

CherryBlossom321 · 01/02/2026 18:31

Same. I spent my earlier life bending myself out of shape to fulfil the expectations of others. I love being at home, and on the occasions I leave it, I start questioning why very quickly. I’m not worried though - what makes you question whether you should be?

Squirrelsnut · 01/02/2026 18:31

I'm happy enough at home but I love walking and nature too much to stay in a lot.
I think sometimes it's anxiety driving the desire to stay in all the time.

Buildingthefuture · 01/02/2026 18:32

We do go out, but honestly? We are both happiest pootling about at home with the dogs. We love to have people over and entertain quite often, we go to friends houses, we go on holiday, we go out for lunch or with friends separately. But our best weekends are the ones when we finish work on a Friday, close the door and have no need to leave (other than for dog walks) until Monday. Bliss.

RichardOnslowRoper · 01/02/2026 18:35

I am your age and go out at least 3 times a week. Felt I should say that to counter the flood of posters claiming 50 something women don't go out. I would be bored to death by the weekend you describe.
But you are entitled to do as you please. Certainly very usual on MN.

Makemineacosmo · 01/02/2026 18:38

I'm very happy to be at home, most of the time. But I still enjoy seeing friends etc. I just don't want to go out out like I used to.

TidyDancer · 01/02/2026 18:40

I’m happiest at home not going out. I like fresh air and nature but I want to do it at my own pace in my own time. I live near a lovely country park and if I could spend my days at home or in the park and not do anything else I would be quite happy. I have a small life and I’m fine about that. I also thrived in lockdown.

RichardOnslowRoper · 01/02/2026 18:41

Next: the MN trope that going out means wild parties and drinking at the pub.🙂
It doesn't.

WonderingWanda · 01/02/2026 18:46

Loads of washing which needs doing makes me want to go out.

L loved lockdown too!

hattie43 · 01/02/2026 18:47

I like going out and I like staying in . Best of both worlds . I’m not someone who ever gets bored , always find something to enjoy

tiredlazy · 01/02/2026 18:49

I have to go out and about every day even if for a couple of hours.
Meeting friends, seeing daughter and grandchildren 2-3 times a week, dog walking ,going to London etc . OP getting out really helps my MH .

youalright · 01/02/2026 18:55

Im in my 30s and I feel like you i love spending time at home. We've spent a lot of money doing the house and garden up nice and I just love it. I work with the general public so I'm really done with a lot of people by the end of the week.

Yes! We have a weekend away coming up soon. I'm trying to convince dh to only go for one night instead of two because my weekend will be over when we get back on the Sunday evening.
I want to watch tv by the fire not spend it in a pub or hotel room 🤣

Quickchangeartist · 01/02/2026 20:13

I love my home. I’m happy and content pottering around it.

I don’t particularly like the thought of going out, out but always have a great time when I do.

Luckily I have friends that know me well enough to understand how I am, and always include me.

I must try harder. I’ll make that a thing for February!
